Tigers eager to build momentum vs. White Sox

Reuters7 hours ago
August 11 - The Detroit Tigers have struggled to find their early-season rhythm in recent weeks, but they may have taken a step toward regaining that momentum over the weekend.
The Tigers look to build on a strong offensive showing when they open a three-game series against the host Chicago White Sox on Monday.
Kerry Carpenter drove in four runs, including a three-run homer, to lead Detroit to a 9-5 win over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
Riley Greene added a two-run homer and had three RBIs for the Tigers, who took two of three games from the Angels and collected 10 hits in Sunday's victory.
"That was a long time coming," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. "(Our) control of the strike zone was excellent today on the offensive side, and then we did damage when we had them vulnerable. We just continued to put up some good at-bats, and some near-misses, which is a good sign."
Detroit is beginning a seven-game road trip with a series against Chicago, which averted a three-game sweep by beating the visiting Cleveland Guardians 6-4 on Sunday.
Lenyn Sosa and Colson Montgomery each hit first-inning homers for the White Sox, who snapped a six-game losing streak with the victory.
Montgomery's 452-foot homer is the furthest of any player at Rate Field this season. The solo shot was Montgomery's ninth homer of his rookie season.
"In the box, he's a threat at the plate, he's looking to do damage," White Sox general manager Chris Getz said.
Chicago is expected to open with right-hander Elvis Peguero (0-0, 4.91 ERA) in the series opener. Peguero was recalled on Sunday from Triple-A Charlotte after the White Sox had selected him off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers on Aug. 3.
Peguero appeared in six games this season as a reliever for Milwaukee and had a 4.91 ERA with four walks and five strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. He made 27 relief appearances for the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate in Nashville and went 3-2 with a 3.55 ERA in 25 1/3 innings.
The White Sox have a void in the rotation created after right-hander Jonathan Cannon was sent to Triple-A Charlotte last Friday. Cannon (4-9, 5.34) gave up seven runs in 1 1/3 innings in an 8-6 loss to host Seattle last Wednesday.
"I know (Cannon) was disappointed, but he understood," Getz said. "We still believe in him, of course, like we believe in so many of our players. And that's why we made the move. We know there's a better version of Jonathan Cannon than what we've seen here recently."
Detroit will counter with right-hander Chris Paddack (4-10, 4.91), who is set to make his third start since being acquired from the Minnesota Twins on July 28.
After pitching six strong innings in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in his Tigers debut, Paddack allowed four runs over four innings in a 6-3 loss to the Twins last Tuesday.
Andrew Benintendi is 4-for-10 with a homer against Paddack, who is 1-2 with a 5.75 ERA in 20 1/3 innings over four career starts versus the White Sox.
The Tigers will be without outfielder Matt Vierling for an extended period after he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain on Sunday.
"Timing-wise, we're obviously towards the tail end of the season," Hinch said. "We have not eliminated the chance for him to come back. The severity of (the oblique strain) is mild, but clearly he's going on the IL."
Shortstop Trey Sweeney was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to replace Vierling on the roster.

Emma Raducanu v Aryna Sabalenka live: British No 1 faces world No 1 in Wimbledon rematch at Cincinnati Open

Emma Raducanu is playing Aryna Sabalenka today in the third round of the Cincinnati Open. The British No 1 battled gamely against the world No 1 in a tight encounter on Centre Court at Wimbledon last month before succumbing to a 7-6, 6-4 defeat, and is out for revenge here. Raducanu carries reasonable form into the contest after reaching the semi-finals of the Washington Open in late July, although she was then thrashed by Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova in Montreal. As the 30th seed in Cincinnati, Raducanu received a bye to the second round where she met Serbia's Olga Danilovic, who thrashed Britain's Katie Boulter in round one. Raducanu came through in straight sets to set up this match with Sabalenka, who comfortably beat the 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in her second-round tie. The tournament is staged at the Lindner Family Tennis Center and is one of the 10 WTA 1000 events on the calendar. It is also considered the key tune-up before the US Open, where Raducanu won her shock grand slam title in 2021, and where Sabalenka is the reigning champion. Raducanu wins first match under new coach Raducanu reached the third round of the Cincinnati Open after a straight-sets win over Olga Danilovic. The British number one marked her first match since Rafael Nadal's former coach Francis Roig joined her team with a confident 6-3 6-2 victory. Roig may not have been overly impressed when Raducanu was broken to love in the first game, but the 2021 US Open champion responded well. After four breaks of serve between the pair in the opening six games, Raducanu came from 30-0 down to grab another for 5-3. She had won seven points in a row to bring up three set points and took the first with an ace. In the second, Raducanu gave her Serbian opponent nothing for free, drawing out errors and eventually earning a break for 3-2. She did not drop another game, wrapping up a fine victory in an hour and 20 minutes. Paramount to become exclusive US home for UFC in $7.7 billion streaming deal

Aug 11 (Reuters) - Skydance-owned Paramount will become the exclusive U.S. home of Ultimate Fighting Championship under a seven-year streaming deal valued at about $7.7 billion, the first major strategic move by the newly merged media giant under new CEO David Ellison. Starting next year, Paramount+ will carry the complete U.S. slate of 13 numbered UFC events and 30 Fight Nights. UFC, owned by TKO Group Holdings (TKO.N), opens new tab, will also have select numbered cards simulcast on Paramount's CBS broadcast network, the companies announced on Monday. The deal builds on Ellison's commitment to increase investment in high-quality exclusive content, which he had called the "single biggest driver of subscriber growth". Sports content, especially rights to live events, has become the cornerstone of media strategy, as cord-cutting accelerates, with rivals such as Netflix (NFLX.O), opens new tab and Disney (DIS.N), opens new tab also striking similar deals to strengthen their offerings. Netflix secured a $5 billion, 10-year global deal for WWE Raw from 2025 and added two NFL Christmas Day games. Disney's ESPN extended rights with NFL, NHL, MLB and College Football Playoff, and plans a joint sports streaming venture with Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O), opens new tab and Fox. "The addition of UFC's year-round must-watch events to our platforms is a major win," Ellison said, calling UFC a "global sports powerhouse". The company will pay an average of $1.1 billion a year and include events at no extra cost to subscribers, shifting away from UFC's traditional pay-per-view model. It also said it may seek UFC rights in other markets as they come up for bidding. UFC stages about 43 live events a year, reaching roughly 100 million U.S. fans and nearly 950 million households globally. Its slate includes marquee numbered card events like UFC 300, weekly Fight Nights, and reality shows like "The Ultimate Fighter" and "Dana White's Contender Series". Paramount Global and Skydance Media completed their $8.4 billion merger last week and appointed Ellison as CEO, capping a drawn-out deal process marked by political scrutiny and shareholder concerns.
