PENAMPANG: The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives stands ready to support entrepreneurs involved in developing Sabah's creative industry. Its Minister, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said agencies under his ministry are prepared to provide financing for entrepreneurs in the creative sector.
Advertisement He said Sabah has tremendous potential to contribute to both the State and national economy, especially through young entrepreneurs engaged in film, visual arts, and digital content. 'If entrepreneurs in the creative industry have formed cooperatives, we can also channel financing to help expand their cooperative businesses. 'That's why I encourage the Sabah Film and Visual Association (SAFVA) to establish a cooperative, which would make it easier for them to secure financing tailored to cooperative needs,' he said. Ewon was speaking after receiving a courtesy call from the Sabah Film and Visual Association (SAFVA), led by its President Chester Pang, along with Secretary-General Jade Morris and Kota Kinabalu Zone Head Gregory Giting. During the meeting, Ewon was briefed on the various activities carried out by the association, as well as the challenges faced by Sabah's creative industry. These include issues related to financing, training, and market opportunities. 'I also shared information on ministry initiatives that are suitable for entrepreneurship in the creative industry. 'We want to encourage more young people to get involved in this sector through strategic support and access to financing,' he said. SAFVA currently has 158 members, comprising producers, directors, crew, and actors. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Waybien launches first search engine of the UK

Redefining How We Discover Online Communities LONDON, July 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — In an age where online communities span across messaging platforms like Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp, and Facebook, finding the right group can feel overwhelming and fragmented. A new UK-based tech startup, Waybien, believes it has found the solution — by building what it calls the world's first community search engine. Unlike traditional search engines, Waybien doesn't crawl websites — it indexes digital communities. Powered by artificial intelligence, the platform analyzes key attributes of each group, including titles, descriptions, message content, and engagement activity. The result is a streamlined, intelligent search experience that connects users with relevant communities across multiple platforms. 'Communities are the future of digital interaction,' says Aden Joseph, Digital Product Manager at Waybien. 'People want content that reaches them directly and fast. In the near future, we may start hearing terms like 'Telegramer', 'WhatsApper'… and of course, 'Waybiener'.' What sets Waybien apart is not just its AI-based search algorithm, but its integrated Community Ads Service. Through a lightweight bot system, Telegram group admins can opt in to receive targeted ads automatically placed by advertisers. (An Ads Platform for Whatsapp is also in development.) This frictionless system benefits both sides: admins generate passive income, while advertisers gain access to niche, high-engagement audiences. Waybien's launch comes at a time when the volume of big data within online communities is growing exponentially. Messaging platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, and Discord generate millions of interactions daily. Efficiently processing and indexing this data is central to Waybien's long-term vision. According to Aden Joseph, the team is also working on an ambitious cross-platform dashboard. This upcoming feature will allow users to monitor and manage communities across Telegram, WhatsApp, and Discord — all from one unified interface. 'This is the direction community interaction is heading,' Joseph notes. 'We want to make it as simple and connected as possible.' Internal data from Waybien reveals over 80 ranking factors that influence how communities are listed. Groups with clear titles, detailed descriptions, and relevant keywords consistently rank higher in search results. The company also plans to launch group verification tokens, allowing community owners to confirm the authenticity of their listings through metadata and profile validation. As online interaction shifts from open feeds to closed group discussions, Waybien's launch comes at a pivotal moment. It's more than just a search engine — it's a blueprint for the next generation of community-driven digital engagement. Discover more: Photo – View original content:

Ewon urges students to embrace entrepreneurship for future success

KUALA LUMPUR: The Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), Datuk Ewon Benedick, has called on university students to take charge of their futures by embracing entrepreneurship instead of waiting for traditional job opportunities. Speaking at the launch of the Bank Rakyat UNIpreneur and RAKYATpreneur programmes at the Bank Rakyat Twin Towers, Ewon stressed the need for self-reliant entrepreneurs who can navigate economic challenges. 'By legally registering their businesses, students can access government-backed training, financing, and mentorship from agencies like TEKUN, MARA, and Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia. Our goal is to create entrepreneurs, not just job seekers,' he said. Since 2020, the RAKYATpreneur and UNIpreneur initiatives have supported 2,633 individuals with RM13.04 million in funding as of December 2024. Ewon noted that these numbers reflect real success stories—lives transformed, dreams realised, and potential unlocked. He also highlighted the role of digital skills in expanding market reach and improving efficiency, particularly for rural entrepreneurs. 'Digitalisation is crucial for an inclusive and sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem, aligning with Malaysia's digital economy and MADANI Economy goals,' he added. Bank Rakyat chairman Datuk Mohd Irwan Mohd Mubarak shared that 63 per cent of RAKYATpreneur participants increased sales within six months, while 80 per cent began saving consistently, and 76 per cent created jobs in their communities. For UNIpreneur, 65.6 per cent of participants saw sales growth, with all adopting regular savings habits. The 2024 programmes now include the RAKYAT Accelerator, offering additional funding for promising alumni. By 2025, the focus will shift to product development, packaging, and fintech integration. 'Entrepreneurs will gain access to digital tools like eBiz Tools Marketplace, eCA-i accounts, i-BizRAKYAT, and free fintech solutions for three to six months, monitored by strategic partners,' Mohd Irwan said. This year, RM3.82 million has been allocated to support 800 participants from August 2025 to January 2026. – Bernama

Ireka to engage legal counsel on termination of Pan Borneo Sabah highway sub-contract

Published on: Tuesday, July 29, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 29, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. KUALA LUMPUR: Ireka Corporation Bhd (Ireka) said it is in the process of engaging legal counsel in response to the proposed mutual termination notice from Gammerlite Sdn Bhd (GSB) relating to a sub-contract for a portion of the Pan Borneo Sabah highway project. The notice was received today from GSB, proposing a mutual termination of the letter of award (LOA) dated Oct 8, 2024 and Oct 11, 2024, where GSB had appointed Ireka's wholly-owned subsidiary, Shoraka Construction Sdn Bhd (SCSB), for road upgrade works from Kampung Lomou Baru to Kampung Toupus. The proposal followed the termination of the Project Operation Agreement (POA) between MTD Construction Sdn Bhd (the main contractor) and GSB, which was terminated on June 30, 2025, due to GSB's failure to secure the required funding by the deadline set out in the POA. Ireka said it has formally communicated its disagreement to GSB, but to date, it has not received a response. 'ICB does not agree to the proposed mutual termination in its current form, as certain scopes of work under the project have already been partially completed by SCSB; and the mutual termination notice does not address settlement terms for the value of work completed or related obligations,' it said in a stock exchange filing. In addition, it said in any event, Ireka said it 'hereby reserves all its rights, interests, and remedies under the LOA and applicable laws against GSB, including but not limited to recovery for work performed and related costs.' 'The financial impact to the group remains indeterminate at this stage, pending the conclusion of settlement discussions. 'The project's contract sum was RM1.07 billion, of which approximately RM10 million has been recognised, with RM1 million in profit based on approximately one per cent physical progress,' it added. Ireka is seeking equitable settlement for work performed and costs incurred, and anticipates legal and administrative expenses in connection with the dispute resolution. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
