Karnataka: Four held after Hindutva outfit members attacked for breaking into cattle owner's home
Belagavi Superintendent of Police Bhimashankar Guled told the newspaper that those who were assaulted were members of the Sri Rama Sene.
'While Sri Rama Sene activists broke the law by barging into a house without permission, some villagers did the same by assaulting them,' Guled said.
The police took cognisance of the case after a video of the incident, which took place last week, was shared on social media, PTI reported. The video purportedly shows five men being tied to a tree and attacked by a group.
The police said that on June 26, members of the Sri Rama Sene stopped a vehicle, alleging that it was transporting cattle for slaughter. They later took the driver to a police station, where he maintained that the cows were being taken for dairy and taming purposes, The Indian Express reported. The cows were later taken to a cattle shelter.
On June 28, members of the outfit allegedly barged into the house of Babasav Ramjan Multani, the cattle owner, after he brought the cows back from the shelter. Only women were reportedly present inside the home at the time.
An unidentified police officer told The Indian Express that the villagers mistook the men for thieves and assaulted them.
However, Sri Rama Sene leader Vithal Gaddi claimed that five of the outfit's members were attacked when they tried to stop the illegal transportation of cattle.
Villagers, meanwhile, have claimed that the assault was unrelated to cattle transport and that the members had allegedly '', PTI reported.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka high court on Thursday sought an explanation from the state government over the suspension of five police officers in connection with the June 4 stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which left 11 people dead, questioning whether a milder action—such as transferring them to other posts—might have been more appropriate. The court was hearing an appeal filed by the Karnataka government challenging the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) July 1 order quashing Indian police service (IPS) officer Vikash Kumar Vikash's suspension. Terming the state's suspension order 'mechanical' and not supported by sufficient material, the tribunal had directed the state to 'immediately' reinstate Vikash. It had also suggested that the government extend similar relief to the other four officers suspended along with Vikash, including the then commissioner of police B Dayananda. Urging the court to stay the tribunal's order, advocate general Shashikiran Shetty on Thursday said that the tribunal had acted in haste and had also overstepped in suggesting the remaining four officers, who were not even parties before it, also be reinstated. Shetty said the state was ready to show the court that all five officers who had been suspended were guilty of 'dereliction of duty.' 'I will be able to show from the records that the suspension order was justified,' Shetty added. Shetty told the court that the tribunal had granted Vikash relief on July 1 and he had reported to duty in his uniform on July 2 without waiting for any formal order from the state reinstating him. The high court, however, said it will hear the matter further on July 9 and until the next hearing, Vikash must show restraint and not precipitate the matter any further. Vikash and the four other officers of Bengaluru police were suspended on June 5, a day after the stampede. Vikash had challenged his suspension before the tribunal, claiming he was not responsible for the tragedy and that the police had no prior notice of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)'s Indian Premier League (IPL) victory parade, which triggered the stampede. It blamed RCB for unilaterally announcing the event via Instagram without informing the authorities. The Karnataka government, however, has challenged the tribunal's order claiming that the revocation of suspension of the officers while the magisterial and judicial inquiries into the stampede were ongoing was likely to adversely impact the probes. Vikash's 'presence in service during this period might adversely affect the examination of witnesses' and undermine the process of justice, the state has argued.

T'gana plant blast: 5 workers still missing, DNA matching to be undertaken
While four workers from Odisha are among those killed in the Telangana factory blast, five others from the eastern state are still missing, prompting their relatives to reach the spot for DNA matching with unidentified bodies, officials said on Thursday. While relatives of four missing persons have given DNA samples for matching, kin of the fifth person will reach the southern state during the day. Among the missing persons, two are from Nabarangpur district, two from Ganjam and one from Cuttack. The bodies of the deceased have also reached their native places in Odisha. So far, 38 people have been killed and several others injured in a powerful blast at a pharmaceutical plant in Pashamylaram in Telangana's Sangareddy district on June 30. "The local administration informed us that 143 people were working in the factory when the blast took place. Some people from Odisha were working in different sections. Of them, four were killed, four injured, among whom one is serious, and five others are still missing," Pritish Panda, Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Directorate of Odisha Parivaar told PTI over the phone. The deceased from Odisha have been identified as R Jaganmohan from Chatrapur area in Ganjam district, Lagnajit Duari from Tigiria area in Cuttack district, Manoj Rout from Simulia in Balasore district and Dolagovind Sahu from Dharmasala in Jajpur district, he said. The injured persons were Samir Padhi of Ganjam district, Chandan Kumar Nayak of Bhadrak, Nilambar Bhadra of Nabarangpur and Chitrasen Batra. Among the injured persons, Samir Padhi is in serious condition with 35 per cent burn injuries and he is in the ICU, the officer said. Panda, along with another officer, are in Sangareddy district to extend necessary support to the people from the state. He said the bodies of people from Odisha have been sent to their native places in ambulances. The body of Jaganmohan (56) reached his residence in Chhatrapur area of Ganjam district on Wednesday. Locals, relatives and Chhatrapur MLA Krushna Chandra Nayak and officials of the Labour Department visited his home and expressed condolences to the family members. His wife Vijayalaxmi (50) and two sons, who have been living in Hyderabad for over two decades, also accompanied the body in the ambulance. They performed the last rites of the deceased as per tradition. Jaganmohan was working in the accounts section in the factory for over two decades. He was inside the plant for an inspection when the explosion took place, said R Sai Yashwanth, elder son of the deceased. "We immediately rushed to the plant but saw only his charred body," he said. The body was dispatched from Hyderabad on Tuesday and it reached Odisha early on Wednesday. The Telangana government provided Rs 1 lakh as assistance to perform the last rites, he said. Samir Padhy (24), another victim from Ganjam district, was battling for his life in a hospital in Hyderabad. Samir, a resident of Baharapur, was working as a machine operator in the factory for the last seven years. The explosion occurred in the plant just 10 minutes after he entered the plant, said Papu Kumar Choudhuary, Samir's brother-in-law, who was working in the same factory. "We both entered the plant just 10 to 15 minutes before the blast. I came out of the plant when the first explosion occurred at a distance and survived," said Choudhury (31) of Aska area. He was working in the paper-cutting section of the factory. "Within a few minutes, the entire area became dark with smoke and several of them could not come out," he said. Papu said Lagnajit Duari (20) of Tigiria in Cuttack district along with a man from Bihar were working in his section before the blast. They could not come out from the spot and were charred to death.

The high court received three Public Interest Litigations (PILs) regarding the alleged sexual assault of a law student at South Calcutta Law College, where an alumnus Monojit Mishra and two senior students- Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee- were reportedly involved, PTI reported. The court sent Monojit, Zaib and Pramit to police custody till July 8. What suspects told abut case? According to the officials, prime suspect Monojit Mishra, who allegedly "set eyes on her" the day she enrolled for the course, decided to "teach her a lesson" for repeatedly rebuffing his advances, co-accused Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee told police. Investigators quoted the arrested duo as saying that Monojit, a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad office-bearer whose clout on campus allegedly extended to admissions, would obsess over the survivor in conversations with his inner circle and hatch plans to make her his girlfriend. He even offered her the post of the college union's general secretary - supposedly his "final bait" - before planning the alleged assault inside the campus security guard's room on June 25 with law students Zaib and Pramit. "Zaib and Pramit said that at least two days before the crime, Monojit informed them that the survivor would be on campus to submit an exam form. They were instructed to keep her there until evening," a source said in the previous TOI copy. After the crime, Monojit allegedly asked some of his trusted aides to be on campus and keep an eye on any unusual activity at Kasba police station, about a kilometre away, through the night. He, Zaib and Pramit left around the same time as the survivor, who was picked up by her have also found out that Monojit, a temporary non-teaching staff member, called a college official the next morning. The official claimed the discussion was "confined to college-related matters". Pramit contacted a lawyer that day, police said. He and Zaib also called several college seniors, some with political links, pleading for help. They refused, telling the duo to "face the consequences", sources said.
