Congress-led UDF slams Left govt over murder convicts jailbreak in Kerala
The opposition termed the government as 'incompetent" and alleged that 'inside help" was provided for the jailbreak to the convict, who was caught later from within the Kannur city limits.
Leader of Opposition in the state assembly V D Satheesan alleged that the Kannur central jail was actually 'ruled by the prisoners," many of whom were 'favourites" of the Left government.
'These prisoners have the latest mobile phones and food of their choice is provided to them. We have raised these points earlier also," he said.
Regarding the jailbreak, Satheesan questioned how the convict got so many clothes to make a rope, how did he climb the walls with only one good arm, as his left arm is missing a hand, from where did he get the tools to cut through the bars of his cell and why there was a delay in informing the police about the escape.
'The golden hours of investigation were lost due to the delay in informing the police. The convict was caught due to the vigilance of the public. It is a humiliating incident for the government," he claimed.
He also joked about how Govindachamy could climb the walls with only one good hand. 'We have not even seen Tarzan swinging from ropes with one hand," he said .
Alleging inside help to the convict, Satheesan said that all materials for a jailbreak were provided to Govindachamy.
Kannur MP and former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief, K Sudhakaran, termed the government as 'incompetent and shameless" and blamed it for the jailbreak.
He also demanded a CBI probe into the escape and alleged the possibility of inside help.
CPI(M) MLA M Rajagopalan also called for a 'comprehensive probe" into the escape, saying it needs to be found out how the prisoner climbed over multiple walls of the jail.
At the same time, he also claimed that there were extensive security arrangements at the prison.
41-year-old Govindachamy was caught from a well near a derelict building in Thalap within Kannur city limits around 10.30 am, hours after his jailbreak.
According to the police, he escaped between 4.15 am and 6.30 am as per prison CCTV footage. PTI HMP HMP ADB

PTI file photo New Delhi: The draft roll for Bihar published by the Election Commission on Friday includes 7.24 crore electors who submitted their enumeration forms within the July 25 deadline. Bihar's electorate, as per the draft roll, is over 65.6 lakh less than its 7.9 crore strength on June 24, 2025, ahead of the onset of the special intensive revision. This figure of 65.6 lakh, made public by EC on July 27 after conclusion of the first phase of SIR, includes 22 lakh dead electors, 36 lakh permanently shifted or absent/untraceable, 7 lakh voters enrolled at more than one place and electors who did not submit their enumeration forms. As many as 15 districts have recorded a higher than state average, though not alarming, percentage of exclusions from the draft roll. These include Gopalganj (15.1%), Purnea (12.1%), Kishanganj (11.8%), Madhubani (10.4%) and Bhagalpur (10.2%). Kishanganj and Purnea are districts with allegedly high concentration of illegal migrants from Bangladesh. "No Slum Will Be Razed Without Rehabilitation": Delhi Chief Minister
New Delhi: In a move that could pause ongoing and future slum evictions across the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday ordered all agencies, including the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Indian Railways, and other land-owning bodies to ensure no slum is demolished without first providing alternate housing to residents. "No slum dweller in Delhi will be harassed anymore," Ms Gupta said, warning that her government would not tolerate evictions without rehabilitation. Ms Gupta also announced a major housing revival plan - nearly 50,000 long-abandoned flats on the city's outskirts, originally built under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), will be renovated and allotted to eligible slum dwellers. "It is a matter of satisfaction that around 50,000 flats built years ago in the outer areas of Delhi will now be allotted to the poor," she added. These flats, according to officials, have been lying in disrepair for years and were never handed over to beneficiaries. The government now plans to refurbish them using over Rs 700 crore that had remained unused, and distribute them under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban (PMAY-U). The Chief Minister's directive makes it clear: no eviction for infrastructure or development purposes can take place without alternate housing being provided first. "If slums are removed for development or any other reason, alternative housing will be provided first," Ms Gupta said. She also indicated that the current policy governing slum clusters may soon be amended. The government, she added, would even approach the courts if required to ensure housing rights are protected. "If required, the government will amend the existing policy on slum clusters and will even approach the court to protect the housing rights of slum dwellers," she said. "Vote Bank Politics": Chief Minister's Swipe At Congress And AAP Ms Gupta used the occasion to slam past governments, blaming both the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the poor conditions in slum clusters. "The Congress party, which established slum colonies in the names of leaders like Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, never provided any facilities to the residents and treated them merely as a vote bank," Ms Gupta said. "The previous AAP government went even further in neglect. Despite making grand promises for the welfare of slum dwellers, they failed to provide even basic amenities." She painted a grim picture of the living conditions under previous administrations. "In these settlements, neither drinking water was supplied, nor roads or pavements constructed, nor proper drainage and sewer systems established. Instead, they left no stone unturned in pushing slum residents towards alcoholism." Ms Gupta said her government would now work to ensure that slum residents are no longer left behind. "My government will now make the residents of these hundreds of slum clusters true citizens of Delhi so that they too can take pride in calling themselves Delhiites." What Data Says 675 slum clusters across Delhi, and are home to an estimated 3.06 lakh families. But the jurisdiction is fragmented - 50 per cent of these clusters are on DDA land, 23 per cent on land owned by PSUs or private entities, and the remaining 22 per cent fall under the MCD, DUSIB, or other state agencies. In terms of distribution, South-East Delhi has the most slums (144 clusters), followed by North Delhi (109), and Central Delhi (92). North-East Delhi has the fewest, with just six clusters. For many residents, even a short delay in allotment or a missing survey entry could mean the difference between legal protection and sudden homelessness. Can The Promise Hold Ground? With legal disputes, inter-agency turf wars, and pending surveys still unresolved, the Chief Minister's promises will be tested not in speeches, but on demolition sites. The question now is: will this shift from bulldozers to blueprints finally hold, or will slum dwellers once again be left watching from the sidelines?

Bangladesh: Student leader arrested on extortion charge
Dhaka, Aug 1 (PTI) Bangladesh police on Friday arrested a student leader on extortion charges, nearly a week after taking into custody five of his comrades, including two prominent figures of Students against Discrimination, in the same case. The Students against Discrimination (SAD) had led last year's mass protest campaign that eventually toppled prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League regime on August 5. 'Our detective branch arrested Jane Alam Apu from Dhaka's Wari area. Apu is the sixth accused to be arrested in the same case of extortion," joint commissioner of police Mohammad Nasirul Islam said. On July 26, police arrested five student leaders, including SAD figures Ibrahim Hossain Munna and Abdur Razzak Riyad, sparking a nationwide uproar. Their arrest prompted the SAD to expel them immediately and dissolve all its units excepting the central committee. Munna was SAD's Dhaka city convenor while Riyad was the convenor of the platform's Private Universities Committee. According to police, the group first went to former lawmaker of now disbanded Awami League Shammi Ahmed's residence at posh Gulshan area in the capital on July 17 and demanded Taka 50 lakh from her husband Abu Zafar since his 'fascist collaborator wife' was not at the house. On that day, they extorted Taka 10 lakh from him and on July 26 they went again to the house to collect the remaining Taka 40 lakh when police appeared at the scene and arrested them responding to a call from the family. The police action came as CCTV footage showing the extortionists receiving cash in the guest room of a residence went viral on social media. The SAD had spearheaded the violent street movement leading to Hasina's ouster. Three days after she fled to India, Muhammad Yunus took over as the head of the interim government on August 8. Two of the representatives of the SAD platform are Yunus' cabinet members. The SAD had later turned into a political outfit, the National Citizen Party (NCP), in February this year. Following the incident, former SAD spokesperson Umama Fatema, who recently resigned from the platform, in a video post on social media alleged that corruption had gripped the platform's leaders and that the 'July Uprising' 'has been made a 'money-making machine'." Fatema, who was one of the key coordinators of the student-led protest last year, said she was 'used like a tissue paper or a doormat" and claimed all key decisions came from Hare Road, where the government's advisers reside.
