The Prime Minister said the projects include the upgrading of Tawau Hospital and Lahad Datu Prison, the construction of the Sepanggar Bay container port and the proposed heart medical centre in Kota Kinabalu. He added that the government has allocated over RM350mil for the Madani Solar programme, with Tawau selected as the pilot project site. The initiative involves the installation of 40 solar-powered streetlights in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and the local community. 'We are doing what's best for the people... addressing issues such as electricity and energy costs, education for children, toilets, science labs, police and armed forces needs including housing, and roads to be repaired. In just over two years, this is what the Madani government has achieved. Some say it's still not enough, and I agree because some of the issues are inherited and cannot be resolved in just a year or two,' he said. Anwar said this in his speech when officiating the closing ceremony of the Sabah Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 at the Tawau Municipal Council square here Sunday (May 11). Anwar also announced that the government has approved an additional allocation of RM10mil to maintain small shops and stalls across the state under the Projek Siap Tamu Sabah. 'In conjunction with today's Mother's Day celebration, this is a gift for the many mothers who run businesses at these Tamu Desa markets to provide greater comfort, allowing them to trade sheltered from the sun and rain. 'I don't want to be a prime minister who forgets the people's hardships. That's why we continue to do our best to develop Sabah, from enhancing connectivity to AI, digital initiatives, and our efforts to eradicate poverty,' he said. Commenting on the three-day Sabah PMR 2025, which concluded Sunday, Anwar said it served as an excellent platform for the local community to gain exposure to various government initiatives, programmes and projects. '...for the people to learn about what the government is doing, such as in the agriculture, digital and defence sectors. Let this be a platform for monitoring government efforts and for the youth to share their views and ideas in building a great and progressive Malaysia,' he said. US cuts Chinese medicine purchases threefold in April, according to customs data
MOSCOW, June 8 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The United States drastically cut down the purchase of Chinese medicines in April, with imports in monetary terms showing a threefold drop to US$173.6 million compared to March, RIA Novosti calculations based on US customs data revealed on Sunday. The shipments of Iodine drugs made up the largest share of supplies in April, accounting for 75 per cent of Chinese medicine exports to the US. Additionally, antibiotics (9.5 per cent) and hormonal products (4.4 per cent ) also accounted for significant volumes of shipments in money. The major sellers of drugs to the US in April were India (19 per cent of US imports), Ireland (14 per cent) and Switzerland (13 per cent). China, with a 12 per cent share, ranked 12th, along with Hungary, Denmark and Japan. China and the US are now essentially in a state of trade war, which erupted after US President Donald Trump imposed a 10 per cent tariffs on imports of all Chinese goods in February, raising it to 20 per cent in March. After several reciprocal measures, the US tariff against Chinese goods reached 145 per cent, and the rate for US suppliers to China hit 125 per cent. However, already in mid-May, China and the US mutually reduced trade tariffs to 10 per cent, from May 14 for 90 days. Consequently, China started imposing a 10 per cent tariff on US imports, while the US levied a 30 per cent tariff on Chinese products as the 20 per cent "fentanyl" tariff remained in effect. Indonesia and EU are close to finalising major trade pact
JAKARTA (Bernama): Indonesia and the European Union are moving closer to finalising a major trade deal, with substantive negotiations on the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) nearing completion, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said. He said the agreement has entered its final phase after nearly a decade of negotiations, with both sides aiming to conclude discussions by the end of June. "This is an important milestone in today's unpredictable global economy and highlights the need for strong international cooperation,' he stated in a statement. Airlangga met with EU Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič in Brussels on Friday. The two sides agreed to resolve remaining issues and finalise a deal encompassing trade, sustainable growth, and environmental standards, with a key breakthrough on the long-contentious sustainability framework. Airlangga also urged the EU to grant preferential access for Indonesian fishery products and welcomed signals of flexibility on deforestation rules for countries with existing trade agreements. Bilateral trade between Indonesia and the EU reached US$30.1 billion in 2024, with Jakarta posting a surplus of US$4.5 billion an increase from US$2.5 billion the previous year. Talks on the IEU-CEPA began in 2016 but have faced delays over regulatory and environmental concerns, with a final deal set to strengthen economic ties between South-East Asia's largest economy and the 27-member bloc. - Bernama
