Detroit Lions to cut special teams star Jalen Reeves-Maybin

INDIANAPOLIS — A year after they signed him to the richest special-teams contract in NFL history, the Detroit Lions are parting ways with Jalen Reeves-Maybin in a cost-cutting move.
The Lions informed Reeves-Maybin they plan to release him before the start of the 2025 league year March 12, a person informed of the decision told the Free Press on Thursday.
Reeves-Maybin was scheduled to count $4.75 million against the cap next season and was due a $500,000 roster bonus. By cutting him, the Lions will save about $2 million in cap room.

The Lions currently sit abut $51 million under next year's $279.2 million salary cap, and general manager Brad Holmes reiterated this week the team is hoping to lock up more of its young cornerstone players to long-term contracts in the near future.
Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, wide receiver Jameson Williams and safety Kerby Joseph are eligible for extensions this spring for the first time, and the Lions hope to re-sign several of their own free agents, including linebacker Derrick Barnes and defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike.
Reeves-Maybin, the NFL Players Association president, signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Lions last spring after earning second-team All-Pro honors as a special teams player.
He missed seven games with a serious neck injury this season, averaged about 15 snaps a game as an extra linebacker on defense and turned 30 in January. He told the Free Press at the Super Bowl earlier this month he was excited to play for new Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard.
"I know he has dreams of being a head coach and it's our job to make sure we go out there and make sure his defense look good and hopefully he'll be a head coach one day," Reeves-Maybin said.
The Lions return starting linebackers Alex Anzalone and Jack Campbell and top backup Malcolm Rodriguez for 2025, and could re-sign Barnes, who is coming off a season-ending knee injury. Special-teams linebackers Zeke Turner and Ben Niemann will be unrestricted free agents next month, backup Anthony Pittman is a restricted free agent and Trevor Nowaske is an exclusive rights free agent.

In attendance at Panthers for Game 4 of Stanley Cup Final: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce

If there's a title on the line, Taylor and Travis are there. But this time, both as spectators. Sports' most famous couple – Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce – has been spotted in Amerant Bank Arena for Game 4 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final. Swift and Kelce are the biggest names of what's sure to be a star-studded evening as the Florida Panthers host the Edmonton Oilers Thursday night. Swift has become quite the sports fan. She's a mainstay at her boyfriend's Kansas City Chiefs game, including February's Super Bowl. It's unclear if pop's power couple are rooting for the Panthers or Oilers. But her decision to make the trek to Sunrise surely can't sit well with Edmonton forward Jeff Skinner, who's in the lineup Thursday for the first time this series. Skinner met Swift while a member of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2013 during an awkward photo op. 'Honestly, I don't think she wanted or knew that that jersey was coming,' Skinner said on ESPN in April. 'The short version is that she thought that I wanted her to sign the jersey for me. And I was there under the impression that I was supposed to give her this jersey and I'd already signed it. 'So it's a bit of a miscommunication there, so I don't know if the curse would've applied. Yeah I guess, I mean - hopefully there's no curse.' Swift isn't the only superstar who's been drawn to the barn by the swamp this spring. Lifelong Panthers fan Ariana Grande was at Game 3. Other stars in attendance Thursday include Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, who's banging the drum pregame, and hockey icon Jaromir Jagr (a former Panther).

Raiders Legend Tim Brown Drops Surprising Player Comparison for Ashton Jeanty

Raiders Legend Tim Brown Drops Surprising Player Comparison for Ashton Jeanty originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Raiders organization has no shortage of legendary players and historic moments to reflect back upon from their days in Oakland and Los Angeles. Advertisement Unfortunately, they have been unable to replicate their previous success in Las Vegas, or in the two decades since they last made an appearance in the Super Bowl. This has largely been due to the team's inability to effectively find talent, especially in the early rounds of the NFL Draft. However, the team picked one of the most surefire prospects in recent memory this season when they chose Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty with the No. 6 overall pick. Former Raiders wide receiver Tim Lee-Imagn Images While Jeanty has been compared to Hall of Fame running backs like LaDainian Tomlinson, Barry Sanders and Marcus Allen, former Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown went a different route. Advertisement He spoke on Tuesday's edition of the Up & Adams show and compared Jeanty to a surprising former Raider. "The guy that he really reminds me of is Napoleon Kaufman," Brown said. "I think Napoleon came into the league very undersized body, or whatever. But I mean, he had the ability to return punts and kicks and do a lot of great things. And his ability to hit a hole and explode was really, really amazing." Kaufman did not have a superb NFL career despite being drafted in the first round by the Raiders in 1995. He contributed just one campaign of over 1,000 rushing yards and played only six NFL seasons before retiring. Given the draft capital that the Silver and Black just invested in Jeanty, him having a similar career to Kaufman would be underwhelming. Advertisement Jeanty was regarded head-and-shoulders above Kaufman as a college prospect, considering he ran for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns last season for Boise State. Under head coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, Jeanty should see a high volume of carries during his rookie season. Barring injury, this workload would all but guarantee him eclipsing Kaufman's 490 rushing yards as a rookie. Brown may be tempering the expectations of Raiders fans, but Jeanty is showing signs of blowing Kaufman's career out of the water. Geno Smith Sets Expectations for 3 Raiders Rookies

Geno Smith Sets Expectations for 3 Raiders Rookies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders made the plunge for quarterback Geno Smith right before the 2025 NFL offseason officially began. Advertisement New head coach Pete Carroll, given his extensive relationship with Smith, was able to convince first-time general manager John Spytek to send a third-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for his talents. Smith already has established offensive pieces in Las Vegas like tight end Brock Bowers and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers. However, the team will need their young players to step up if this offense wants to get off the ground. Spytek utilized the team's first pick on a running back and three other selections on wide receivers, so there will be ample opportunity for rookies to carve out a role. Las Vegas Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty (2).Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images On Monday, the Raiders had their media day at the team facility. Smith spoke about three first-year players in particular that he had high expectations for going into the 2025 NFL season. Advertisement "I think Dont'e (Thornton Jr.) and Jack (Bech) have done a great job of just stepping right and becoming a part of this team," Smith said. "We got high expectations for those guys. Ashton (Jeanty), we've got high expectations for Ashton." Jeanty was the team's No. 6 overall pick. He came to the Raiders from Boise State, where a 2,601-yard, 29-touchdown campaign earned him a runner-up finish in the Heisman Trophy voting. Bech joined the Silver and Black during the second round after a standout season at TCU. As a senior, he caught 62 passes for 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns. Thornton was a fourth-round pick by Las Vegas. He caught just 26 passes for 661 yards last season at Tennessee, but he led the country with 25.4 yards per reception. Advertisement Given the Raiders' league-worst 79.8 rushing yards per game last season, Jeanty is expected to be a fixture on Day 1. Las Vegas also needs a receiver to step up alongside Meyers, who recorded a career-best 1,027 receiving yards in 2024. Smith's high expectations for these three rookies indicates that they are ahead of schedule with the steep learning curve that the NFL provides.
