Amid language row, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin rolls out new education policy for state
The State Education Policy (SEP) was prepared by a committee formed by the Tamil Nadu government and headed by retired high court Judge Justice D Murugesan, who submitted the report in 2024.

This development comes against the backdrop of months of protests against the National Education Policy (NEP) introduced by the Centre.
The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has strongly opposed the NEP, describing it as 'against social justice' and an attempt to impose Hindi on the state. Tamil Nadu has categorically refused to adopt it.
In May, the state moved the Supreme Court, alleging that around Rs 2,200 crore in central funds had been withheld as a consequence of its refusal to implement the NEP.
In its plea, the state sought a declaration that the NEP 2020 and the PM SHRI Schools Scheme cannot be enforced upon it without its formal consent.
The petition argued that funds under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme had been unlawfully linked to these central initiatives, calling the move 'unconstitutional, arbitrary, and illegal.'
It stated: 'The glaring reason for such non-disbursement is that the Defendant has linked the release of Samagra Shiksha Scheme funds with the implementation of 'National Education Policy' and 'NEP exemplary PM SHRI Schools' Scheme, despite the fact that this policy / scheme are separate schemes."
"The reason for such apparent linkage is the MoU pertaining to the PM SHRI Schools Scheme, which dictates the implementation of the NEP-2020 in the Plaintiff State (Tamil Nadu) in its entirety — something the Plaintiff State opposes due to Clause 4.13 of the NEP-2020, which envisages the three-language formula.'
Tamil Nadu is demanding the release of Rs 2,291.30 crore from the Centre, along with 6% annual interest on Rs 2,151.59 crore from May 1 until full payment.
The state has also requested that the court direct the Centre to comply with the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, by ensuring timely disbursal of its 60% share of grants-in-aid before each academic year.

Next-Gen BrahMos in pipeline, says DRDO chief in Pune
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], August 9 (ANI): DRDO is looking to build a next-generation BrahMos missile, which will be a lighter, smaller version of the current version, the organisation's Chairman and Department of Defence Secretary (R&D) Samir V Kamat said on Saturday. BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) will be able to fit into any platform, unlike the current missile, which can only be used with the Sukhoi aircraft, the DRDO chief added. 'We are looking at BrahMos-NG, which is a smaller version of BrahMos, which can then be fitted on all our other platforms. Today, BrahMos can only be fitted on the Sukhoi platform, but if we can make it smaller, we can fit it on all our platforms. We are planning to start it soon," he at a press conference in Pune on the sidelines of the convocation ceremony of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Kamat also highlighted the pivotal role of indigenous technologies, including the BrahMos missile and Akashteer air defence system, in Operation Sindoor.'When it comes to offensive weapons, BrahMos was the primary weapon used, which was launched from our Sukhoi Mark 1 platform. When it comes to defensive weapon systems, the Akashteer system, the anti-drone system," he added. Kamat further mentioned how the Akashteer network helped in identifying any threats coming towards India, and also in deciding what kind of weapon could be used to neutralise such threats.'All the sensors were networked using the Akashteer, which helped in identifying the threats coming towards us and then deploying the right kind of weapon to neutralise those threats. Advanced early warning and control aircraft were also used for advanced surveillance. This is broadly what I can say without getting into too much," the DRDO Chairman while also expressing pride over the growing strength of India's defence research and development sector, Kamat mentioned, 'It's indeed a proud moment for all of us. It's a reflection of the strength of our R&D and production in the defence domain. I'm sure going ahead, this number will keep increasing."Earlier, it was reported that the annual defence production has achieved a record high of Rs 1,50,590 crore for the Financial Year (FY) 2024-25. The milestone represents a robust 18 per cent growth over the previous fiscal's output of Rs 1.27 lakh crore, and a staggering 90 per cent increase since FY 2019-20, when the figure was Rs 79,071 crore. South Odisha Development Council will be formed soon, says CM Majhi
BHUBANESWAR/JEYPORE: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday announced that the South Odisha Development Council (SODC) will be formed by the state government soon. Releasing the third installment of Rs 5000 each to one crore beneficiaries under the Subhadra scheme at a function at Jeypore in Koraput district, the chief minister said that a task force headed by school and mass education minister Nityanand Gond had been set up by the state government to suggest how to proceed in this regard. Stating that the task force will submit its report soon, the chief minister said the SODC will be in line with the Western Odisha Development Council (WODC). Majhi said that the government is committed to the development of the southern region of the state unlike the previous dispensation. Responding to the demand of Congress MLA from Jeypore, Taraprasad Bahinipati, the chief minister announced that a Vande Bharat Express will run from Jeypore to Bhubaneswar. He further announced that the paper mill at Gaganapur in the district which closed down will be revived by the government. Besides, a new college will also be set up at Jeypore, he added. The chief minister laid foundation stones for 436 projects worth over Rs 452 crore and inaugurated 126 other projects worth over Rs 309 crore during the occasion. These include important infrastructure development projects in the education, health, roads and tourism sectors. The chief minister said that with the implementation of these projects, the development of the district would be further accelerated.

Shah visit to set BJP's narrative for 2026 polls
Guwahati: Union home minister Amit Shah will visit Assam on Aug 29 to formally launch BJP's political narrative for the upcoming assembly elections, due early next year. The party is eyeing a third straight term amid a shifting regional political landscape. Adding weight to Shah's ideological kick-off to poll campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam 10 days later, on Sept 8, with a development-heavy itinerary, criss-crossing districts. Shah's visit includes the inauguration of the newly constructed Raj Bhavan in Guwahati, followed by a keynote speech at the Panchayat Pratinidhi Sammelan. "The speech by Amit Shah ji to the panchayat representatives will be an important one ahead of the elections.
