But did the 16-time World Champion actually serve in the armed forces?
The truth about John Cena's military service
Despite the strong association, John Cena has never served in the United States military. The confusion stems from both his in-ring character and his own public admiration for the armed forces. During an appearance on the Club Shay Shay YouTube channel, Cena revealed that he was seriously considering joining the military before his wrestling career began.

He shared, 'The weekend I was going to go from Los Angeles to San Diego to go join, my buddy was like, 'Hey man, you know, we are training to be wrestlers down in Orange County. You wanna try it out before you go?'' That chance moment changed the trajectory of his life, leading him into professional wrestling instead of the Marines.
Cena's connection with the military didn't end with that decision. In 2006, he starred in the film The Marine, a role that influenced the evolution of his WWE character.
From then on, Cena began to wear military-style gear, use salutes in his entrances, and speak frequently about values like honor, loyalty, and respect.
In an
, he once explained: 'Every night when I do that salute, it's also a sign of respect to the men and women that don the uniform of the Armed Forces.' He also credited his catchphrase - 'Hustle, Loyalty, Respect' - to the values he admired in military culture.
Cena became a fixture in WWE's Tribute to the Troops shows, a tradition that began in 2003.

CM Punk, Rhea Ripley reveal chaos behind the scenes in Netflix's WWE: Unreal docuseries
What really happens before a WWE superstar steps into the ring? The new Netflix docuseries, WWE: Unreal, pulls back the curtain on the wild world of professional wrestling, featuring never-before-seen moments, creative chaos, and emotional truths from stars like CM Punk and Rhea Ripley. The show will premiere on July 29. Narrated by WWE Chief Content Officer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, the five-episode series explores the creative pipeline that powers Monday Night Raw and Friday Night SmackDown, from WWE headquarters in Connecticut to the global stage. CM Punk, who returned to WWE in 2023 after nearly a decade away, told E Online that the show will reveal how a single idea can snowball into a headline-grabbing story. He told the publication that fans will learn the seed of an idea and the genesis of how it all 'goes from headquarters to on the road'. Rhea Ripley added that fans will witness how storylines take shape in closed-door meetings and how creative direction often shifts mid-show due to injuries, audience reactions, or last-minute changes. 'Things can change on the fly. They happen all the time,' said Ripley. Ripley, who vacated her Women's World Championship in April 2024 due to a shoulder injury, knows firsthand how unpredictable wrestling can be. She said, 'You are always stressed going out there. Things do go wrong.' CM Punk, echoing the sentiment, explained that his preparation routine changes depending on whether he is wrestling. He said that if he is wrestling, he will not deadlift the morning of a match. Despite their larger-than-life personas, even the top stars feel nervous before going live, stated another report in Netflix's . Ripley was quoted saying that it is a normal, human thing. She said she listens to music to channel her fierce alter ego, The Eradicator. 'Also, Triple H might give me a pep talk before I go out, that always helps,' she added. The show also spotlights heartfelt farewells, like John Cena getting ready to retire after over 20 years in WWE. Punk says he partly regrets leaving when he did, but it feels better to be back and work with Cena one last time. Punk, according to Tudum, also talked about a storyline that got canned but still gets him thinking; he was once in the running to play Vince McMahon's son from an affair. Punk says he does not want that to be reality, but he wonders how it would have played out. WWE: Unreal is just one of many sports documentaries on Netflix that give you a look behind the scenes, like Quarterback and Starting 5. Whether you have been watching WWE for years or are just starting out, Unreal is supposed to show you the actual drama behind all the staged craziness. Rhea Ripley is married to fellow WWE superstar Buddy Matthews (formerly Buddy Murphy). CM Punk's '31' tattoo refers to his younger sister's soccer jersey number. Rhea Ripley and Buddy Matthews have been married since June 2024.

‘Peacemaker' Season 2 Trailer: John Cena zooms off on a wild adventure in a parallel universe
DC Studios took over the late Saturday spot in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel Studios used to be, bringing the second season of Peacemaker from the Warner Bros. comic book label, which is co-run by James Gunn . There was additional cause for celebration, though. The new season 2 trailer, which featured Christopher Smith (played by John Cena ) discovering a parallel dimension where things are "better". This doesn't just pertain to his costume and wardrobe, but even his love life with Harcourt (played by Jennifer Holland). While Peacemaker goes about living his life in a parallel dimension, Superman's Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, is determined to shut down the portal. The clip was shared online with the caption, "Making peace with yourself is harder than it looks." Watch it here: "I really like TV shows where the characters don't just return every season and they're the same exact characters," James Gunn said about Smith from season 2. "I want to see growth. I want to see change and sometimes regression,' he remarked and added, "Peacemaker is a different guy this year. He's dealing with the demons he uncovered from the first season and trying to deal with them, and the world is not accepting him the way he is. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sucre: Unsold Sofas Prices May Surprise You (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo They aren't accepting him as a hero.' Peacemaker follows Christiopher Smith, played by John Cena, who saves the world from alien butterflies in the season one finale. Additionally, we find out that Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) is Leota's (Danielle Brooks) mother. At the end of season one, Chris is sitting on his stoop, reflecting on the details of life, beside the ghost of his racist father, Auggie (played by Robert Patrick); it seems that the man will be present in season two like a sour Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the meantime, Chris has managed to keep Goff alive, the butterfly that was in control of Sophie. A house full of costumes and weapons is left behind by Chris' father. The new season, according to the logline, follows vigilante superhero Christopher 'Chris' Smith, as he continues to kick criminals in his misguided quest for peace at all costs while trying to connect his past with his newly discovered sense of purpose. Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, new cast members Sol Rodriguez and Tim Meadows, Grillo, and Cena were among the returning members of Season 2 who took the stage today. All eight Peacemaker episodes were written by Gunn, who also directed three of them, including the premiere.
