Turning Average Into Empowered: New Research Highlights The Need For New Zealanders To Upskill Their Financial Education

Auckland, New Zealand [9th August 2025]: A new national report card on financial literacy is shining a light on the opportunity for New Zealanders to boost their financial confidence.
The latest research from Partners Life shows that most New Zealanders see themselves as 'average' with money. However, there's potential to save hundreds of dollars each year by making simple and small changes to how people manage their money.
But this isn't about pointing blame or handing out a failed report card, it's about powering up. That's why Partners Life, in partnership with Banqer, is once again giving adult New Zealanders the chance to gain free access to the Money Month Challenge. It's a practical, enjoyable, and empowering initiative designed to help people boost their financial wellbeing and set themselves up for a stronger future by being money wise.
Key research findings found:
• Room To Grow: Only 23% of New Zealanders rate their financial knowledge as 'excellent'.
• Real Money On The Table: In just the last year, nearly 1 in 3 New Zealanders (30%) lost $200 or more to avoidable fees, accidental purchases or forgotten subscriptions. For most households these everyday slip ups are costing real money.
• Monthly Expenses Adding Up: Over half of New Zealanders (59%) say keeping up with monthly expenses is tough, and 44% have used credit or Buy Now, Pay Later services at least some of the time to help make ends meet.
• Health Impacts: Over half of New Zealanders (54%) have lost sleep or experienced stress worrying about money, and 39% say financial stress is affecting their relationships with friends and whānau.
• Lessons Learned the Hard Way: For 58% of New Zealanders, the main source of financial education has come from making mistakes.
• Education Gap: While close to 84% of New Zealanders recognise the importance of financial literacy and budgeting - especially in today's continued cost-of-living crisis – most (76%) have never had the benefit of any professional financial literacy training.
The research underscores the importance of improving financial education for New Zealand adults. Building on the success of the past three years' Money Month Challenges, Partners Life and Banqer are excited to join forces again to offer a free, two week online financial literacy experience this August.

The free Money Month Challenge begins on August 18 and is open to all New Zealand adults and marks the third year Partners Life and Banqer have brought this valuable initiative to the community.

The results come from a Partners Life-commissioned survey of n=1,018 nationally representative respondents who live in New Zealand, aged 18 years and over, conducted in July 2025 by Pureprofile.

She believed the Greens were trying to take up as much airspace as possible before a capital gains tax announcement. 'Because I think once there is some kind of capital gains tax policy announcement from Labour, that's all we're really going to be talking about for a while.' Speaking to Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking this morning, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon dismissed the latest poll results, saying he does not want to speak about himself, and all Kiwis want is for National to fix the economy. 'I mean, I don't go into polls because every time there is a different poll every week in this country, and people don't want me to talk about myself or polls,' he told Hosking. 'I think the big trend is pretty obvious. People expect us to fix the economy. It's as simple as that. So fix it, and then in 2026, they'll make their call.'

The latest Taxpayers' Union-Curia Poll - taken between 3 and 5 August - comes after a string of negative headlines about the economy. Labour has overtaken National as the largest party, gaining 2 points to 33.6 percent, while National drops 2.1 points to 31.8 percent. The Greens are up 0.4 points to 9.8 percent, ACT is down 0.5 points to 8.6 percent, New Zealand First is down 2 points to 7.8 percent and Te Pāti Māori down 0.3 points to 3.2 percent. If an election were held today, the centre-right bloc would lose four MPs for a total 61 seats, while the centre-left bloc would gain four MP and also reach a total 61 seats. With neither bloc having the upper hand, it would be a hung Parliament. The last Taxpayers' Union-Curia Poll showed the coalition parties reasserting their lead with enough support for 65 seats, driven by a surge in support for New Zealand First. Party vote Labour 33.6 percent, up 2 percentage points (43 seats) National 31.8 percent, down 2.1 (40 seats) Greens: 9.8 percent, up 0.5 (12 seats) ACT: 8.6 percent, down 0.5 (11 seats) NZ First: 7.8 percent, down 2 (10 seats) Te Pāti Māori: 3.2 percent, down 0.3 points (6 seats) For the minor parties, TOP is up 1.4 points to 2.6 percent, Outdoors and Freedom is up 1 point to 1.1 percent and Vision NZ is up 0.4 points on 0.4 percent. Cost of living remains voters' most important issue at 24.4 percent (+2.8 points), closely followed by the economy more generally at 20.7 percent (+1.6 points). Health is the next largest issue on 10.0 percent, followed by employment on 6.0 percent. Preferred prime minister Christopher Luxon: 20.2 per cent, up 0.5 Chris Hipkins: 20.2 per cent, up 0.6 Winston Peters: 8.2 per cent, down 1.1 Chlöe Swarbrick: 8 per cent, up 1 David Seymour: 6.2 per cent, up 0.5 In preferred Prime Minister ratings, Christopher Luxon is up 0.5 points to 20.2 percent while Chris Hipkins is up 0.6 points to also sit at 20.2 percent. They are intended to track trends in voting preferences, showing a snapshot in time, rather than be a completely accurate predictor of the final election result.
