In a shocking display of violence on Monday evening, 27-year-old Shane Davon Tamura from Las Vegas unleashed chaos in a Manhattan high-rise, leaving four people dead—including an off-duty NYPD officer—and another critically injured.
The incident unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent building that houses major firms like Blackstone and the
NFL
headquarters.
Officer Didarul Islam
among first shot, shooter let a woman live before final killings
According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamura arrived at the location in a black BMW armed with an M4 rifle. Surveillance footage captured him exiting the vehicle and walking directly into the lobby, where he fatally shot Officer Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant and three-and-a-half-year NYPD veteran.
"One additional male is shot in the lobby, per his statement from the hospital," Tisch confirmed.
After killing a security guard hiding behind a desk, Tamura entered an elevator. In a chilling moment of clarity, he allowed a woman to leave unharmed before riding up to the 33rd floor. There, he shot and killed another woman before taking his own life. 'One person was struck and killed on that floor,' Tisch told reporters.
Gunman crossed multiple states before attack; had history of mental illness
Investigators revealed that Tamura's journey to New York was a cross-country drive starting from Las Vegas. He was tracked passing through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey before arriving in Manhattan just hours before the shooting. His vehicle contained a revolver, multiple magazines, and additional ammunition.
Authorities have confirmed Tamura had a history of mental health struggles, raising fresh concerns over interstate tracking of potentially dangerous individuals and the ease of access to assault weapons like the AR-15-style M4 he used.
Mayor Eric Adams called the incident "a tragedy on many levels" and highlighted Officer Islam's heroism. Islam leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children.
This incident has reignited debates around gun control, mental health, and security protocols in private commercial buildings—even those staffed by paid NYPD details.

Migrant verification drive: Civil society group writes to Gurgaon DC, police, NHRC, Haryana chief secretary

The Mehnatkash Association has requested legal safeguards for Bengali migrant workers allegedly bearing the brunt of the ongoing foreigners' verification drive in Gurgaon district. In an email sent to the Gurgaon district administration, police commissioner, chief secretary, and the National Human Rights Commission on Thursday, the civil society group alleged illegal detention and deportation of Indian citizens during the ongoing 'Special Talashi Abhiyan'. The email expressed concern over the detentions reportedly carried out following a Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) order dated May 2, and a subsequent district administration directive issued on July 18. The operation is aimed at identifying 'illegal immigrants' in Gurgaon. According to Mehnatkash, the drive has resulted in mass detentions and deportations, disproportionately impacting unorganised migrant workers – particularly citizens from West Bengal and Assam – and members of the Muslim community. It alleged that raids were being conducted in labour colonies, slums, construction sites, auto stands, and households employing domestic workers. 'Entire families have fled overnight, abandoning their homes, employment, and children's education. Many who have returned to their home states face unemployment, debt, and social stigma. At the same time, employers in Gurugram are reporting acute shortages of workers, severely impacting the informal economy, particularly the domestic work, construction, and service sectors,' the email states. The organisation further alleged that some detainees have been mistakenly designated 'illegal Bangladeshi immigrants' without proper legal process or investigation, despite subsequent verification by local authorities confirming their Indian citizenship. The association attributed the situation, in part, to the non-implementation of the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act, 1979, which mandates the registration of migrant workers. It has called for immediate cessation of raids, individualised legal scrutiny of all detentions, and a ban on collective deportations. Additional demands include judicial oversight, rehabilitation for wrongfully deported citizens, compensation for affected families, anti-discrimination police training, and full legal safeguards for internal migrants. The Gurgaon police had recently said they would round up only 'confirmed Bangladeshis' as part of the verification drive, and added that they had shut four holding facilities that housed suspected foreigners. The four facilities were at community centres in Badshahpur, Sector 10A, Sector 40, and Sector 1 in Manesar. 'We had completed verification and checking of the suspected foreigners, hence the move. Even earlier, only those who were strong suspects based on missing or discrepancies in documents, or, for example, with Bangladeshi numbers on their phone… were taken to the holding centres and immediately released post verification. Nobody needs to fear or flee,' a police spokesperson said.

Who is Shanta Pal, Bangladeshi YouTuber and model arrested with fake Indian documents in Kolkata?

A Bangladeshi woman named Shanta Paul, who worked as a small-time model and food vlogger, was arrested in Kolkata this week for using fake Indian identity documents. These included two Aadhaar cards, a voter ID, and a ration card. Shanta, 28, was also a crew member for Regent Airways, a Bangladeshi airline. She had entered India legally a few months ago with a valid passport. After arriving, she first rented a place in Kolkata's Park Street area, and later moved to a flat in Bikramgarh, located in the southern part of the city. According to police, Shanta got in touch with an agent who helped her get fake Indian documents. These documents showed that she was living in India and had Indian citizenship. Using these, she allegedly started a car rental business by pretending to be a local resident. Reportedly, Paul has won several modelling contests in Bangladesh and had been living at a rented apartment in Bijoygarh, Jadavpur, since 2023. According to investigators, she frequently shifted addresses and lived under different identities. Her involvement in the app-cab business reportedly brought her under the scanner. She was caught in Bikramgarh in connection with a cheating case. During their investigation, Kolkata Police found two Aadhaar cards (with different addresses: one from East Burdwan and another from Kolkata), along with a voter ID and a ration card. A case of cheating and criminal conspiracy has been registered against her. Shanta Paul used fake Indian ID to travel abroad, say police Shanta ran a food blog on Facebook where she regularly shared videos about food and her daily life. Her last video was posted on July 28. According to police, these social media posts were part of a carefully planned act to make herself look like an Indian citizen. During the investigation, police found that Shanta wanted to travel to several foreign countries, but due to limitations in Bangladesh, she couldn't. That's why she came to India and used fake Indian documents to try and travel abroad. She reportedly used the address of her rented flat in Kolkata to make a fake ration card. Police are now trying to identify the people who helped her get these documents. Officers also told PTI that her social media account included photos where she accused a man of holding both an Aadhaar card and proof of being a Bangladeshi, possibly to mislead or divert attention from herself. In 2019, Paul participated in the Miss Asia Global competition held in Kerala. In earlier media interviews in North Bengal, she said she was working in Bengali and Telugu films.
