Near hits: 13 songs performed by artists after being turned down by musicians
Would Kylie's recent smash hit Padam Padam have been quite as successful if it had been sung by Rita Ora? That's the question being asked by Ora herself, after admitting she nearly sang it.
The 2023 track, penned by Lostboy, was initially considered for Rita Ora before it ultimately became Kylie Minogue's much-lauded comeback hit. Despite this, the 34-year-old singer has expressed no ill will about not recording the song.
Speaking to the Daily Star, the British singer revealed that there were no hard feelings that the Australian pop icon ended up performing the song instead: 'I've always grown up with this saying, 'What's for you won't pass you'. And that's always how I've lived my life. And it's Kylie Minogue - she's the queen of the world, in my opinion. So, of course, Kylie's going to get it and kill it and do a great job.
'And in the pop industry, that happens every day to a lot of big artists - you just don't know about it."
But Rita Ora isn't the only musician who either turned down, or was passed over, a song that went on to become a smash hit for another pop culture icon. Check out 13 of the near hits that could have occurred if the butterfly effect had been different.
1 . Baby One More Time (Britney Spears)
This iconic track was famously offered to R&B group TLC and Swedish singer Robyn. TLC reportedly passed on it because they felt it didn't fit their image, and Robyn wasn't ready to release it. Instead, it went to Britney Spears and launched her into superstardom, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, and topping the charts in the UK, Canada, Australia, and many other countries globally. | Getty Images Photo Sales
2 . Call Me Maybe (Carly Rae Jepsen)
This incredibly catchy pop anthem was reportedly offered to Selena Gomez and even Justin Bieber (before he championed Jepsen's version) who both passed on it. It then became a massive breakthrough hit for Carly Rae Jepsen, spending 9 consecutive weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and topping the charts in the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and numerous other countries worldwide. | Getty Images Photo Sales
3 . Don't Cha (The Pussycat Dolls ft. Busta Rhymes)
This catchy track was reportedly offered to socialite Paris Hilton and the British girl group Sugababes before it became a breakout hit for The Pussycat Dolls. Don't Cha was a huge international success, peaking at number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topping the charts in 15 countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, and Ireland. | Getty Images Photo Sales
4 . Gold Digger (Kanye West ft. Jamie Foxx)
This massive hit was originally written by Kanye West with a female rapper, Shawnna, in mind, but she decided not to use it. Gold Digger was a colossal hit for Kanye West, spending 10 consecutive weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. It also reached number 2 in the UK and was a top 10 hit in Australia, Canada, and Ireland. | Getty Images Photo Sales

Celebrity-owned beauty brand sends shoppers wild over must-have item with surprising feature: 'OMG yes I've been waiting for this
The brand only launched a little over a year ago, but it has already become a cult favourite in beauty circles. Now, TYPEBEA has unveiled its latest innovative product and fans are thrilled with the newest addition to the popular range. TYPEBEA, created by singer Rita Ora and Australian beauty entrepreneur Anna Lahey, has unveiled a dry shampoo containing the cult haircare brand's hero ingredient to promote growth. The G·5 3-in-1 Dry Shampoo not only refreshes and adds volume to hair, but it contains nourishing ingredients to support hair health and feels luxurious to use too. After teasing the latest drop across socials, fans were quick to share their joy when the dry shampoo was finally unveiled. One wrote:'Yes!!! Obsessed!' another shared: 'OMGGGG YAYYY,' while a third branded the buy simply 'Sensational'. Delivered in an ultra-fine mist, the dry shampoo is packed with ingredients that support hair growth and gentle exfoliants to ensure a cleansed scalp. The fast absorbing product soaks up oil, sweat and odour without leaving behind residue or white cast that many other brands do. G·5 3-in-1 Dry Shampoo's hero ingredient is a three per cent dose of Baicapil: a blend of scutellaria baicalensis (Baikal skullcap, a plant native to East Asia used in Traditional Chinese Medicine), soy and wheat sprouts. TYPEBEA's G·5 3-in-1 Dry Shampoo uses the brand's hero ingredient, Baicapil, to support healthy hair growth The potent formulation works to stimulate hair growth, increase hair density, reduce hair loss and support healthier looking hair. It includes Lactic Acid to gently exfoliate and removes excess product and dead skin cells. A buildup of these on the scalp leads to oily roots and can prevent healthy hair growth. Free from sulphates, silicones and parabens, the $50 product ($42.50 with a subscription) cleanses the scalp while absorbing oil and adding lift to the roots. Unlike other dry shampoos which can be damaging to hair and act to mask unclean tresses, TYPEBEA's G·5 3-in-1 Dry Shampoo, cleans, nourishes and protects. This allows users to benefit from the brand's TYPEBEA's signature scent of citrus, bergamot and wood ensure hair smells as fresh as it looks, while the formulation leaves strands soft and shiny. The potent formulation works to increase hair density and reduce hair loss by 60 per cent, while Lactic Acid gently exfoliates and removes excess product and dead skin cells Easy to use— you simply shake, spray roots from 15cm away, leave for a few moments, then brush through for refreshed and revived hair. The haircare brand's first product, the G·1 Overnight Boosting Peptide Hair Serum, became an instant bestseller. Customers reported 'visible regrowth' and 'less shedding' after using the $80 leave-in serum regularly. The hair growth range also includes a shampoo, conditioner and hydra-gloss treatment mask. TYPEBEA followed up the hugely successful launch collection with two styling products, which they released earlier this year. The S·1 Ultimate Styling Serum and the S·2 Sea Salt Texture Mist are formulated with performance-driven actives to deliver a 'quick-fix, flawless finish' that will cut your getting-ready routine down to mere moments. Speaking to The Sun this week about the track, she explained: 'It's the need of it happening right now, in this moment. It's the idea that I want it on right now or I don't want to hear about it. It's that simple. 'I think that comes from the excitement of the song. I wanted it to feel instant and to have an impact. It is a brave, straight-up demand that you can use in any way you want.' Heat is expected to feature on her upcoming, still untitled, fourth album, which will be her first album release since her 2023 You & I. Rita told the publication: 'I wanted to really celebrate my sexuality and the way I am as a woman. My last album was so different, it was about my love life and getting married. 'But with this next lot of music I wanted it to be so carefree and back to how I was coming up in the industry. I wanted to celebrate everything I have become. It's not super deep, just fun.' Rita has recently been supporting Kylie for the first leg of her tour after she previously revealed that Kylie's 2023 mega-hit from Tension, Padam Padam was nearly given to her. The synth-pop banger - penned by Norwegian singer-songwriter Ina Wroldsen and producer Lostboy - was a viral hit for Kylie. But several artists were asked if they wanted to record it, including the Anywhere singer, because they didn't feel it was a Kylie song. Rita began performing as the support act for Kylie's Tension Tour in April at Atlanta's State Farm Arena. Gushing about the gig afterwards, she said: 'First night of the tour, wow the reception was incredible and I'm so grateful for this opportunity to connect with North America. It feels like such a huge compliment to open up for such an icon.'

Kanye West has 'very different name now' after rebranding himself
Kanye West, also known as Ye, is said to have changed his name for the second time in recent years, with the rapper's latest name reportedly disclosed on business documents Kanye West, also known as Ye, has quietly changed his name for the second time in recent years. The rapper's latest name is said to have been used on legal documents related to businesses associated with him. The musician, 48, is reportedly referred to as Ye Ye on documents filed with the State of California by his chief financial officer, Hussain Lalani. It comes after he had previously become known as Ye, with it announced that he had legally changed his name to that in 2021. His apparent latest name hasn't been publicly announced by him, though. It's said to have emerged when his businesses filed a Statement of Information, which provides up-to-date information for an entity, such as addresses and directors. The US Sun, which has reportedly seen the documents in question, states that Ox Paha Inc now calls him 'Ye Ye' on them. It further claims that his clothing brand Yeezy Apparel, as well as his music businesses Yeezy Record Label LLC and Getting Out Our Dreams Inc, are also referring to him by that name. It adds that the business headquarters of Ox Paha Inc., Yeezy Record Label LLC and Getting Out Our Dreams Inc. has changed. It was said to have been a church in Northridge, Los Angeles, that burnt down after being left vacant by him, but is now reportedly listed as the office building in the city of Los Angeles that he bought in 2023, reports the Mirror US. The news comes after he announced earlier this month that he would be making a new account on X to reflect his name Ye. He shared his plans in a post on June 1. He wrote in a message to his followers on the platform: "Ima finally stop using the @kanyewest Twitter cause my name is Ye. Gonna start a Ye account and it is what it is." It came after Piers Morgan mentioned his handle on the platform du r ing an interview last month. The rapper had walked out of an interview on Uncensored. He left after Piers said that he had 32 million, rather than 33 million, followers on X. The host later issued a correction, but within minutes of the interview starting, he had left. Piers later suggested that it happened before he could ask about antisemitism and other topics. Ye - who in tweets weeks later said he was "done with antisemitism" and that he loves "all people," as well posting "God forgive me for the pain I've caused" - having been criticised for comments and other actions in recent years. Just last month, it was reported that he had released a song titled Heil Hitler (Hooligan Version). Host Piers told fellow guest Sneako after Ye left: "Tell him from me he's a snivelling, little coward, and he's an anti-semite and a Hitler worshipper. That's what I would have asked him if he'd had the b***s to sit there and take the questions." One fan later wrote on X: " Piers Morgan calling him ' Kanye West ' is exactly why Ye left the interview." Piers reacted to the suggestion by saying: "His X account name is @kanyewest …" The rapper has since shared plans to stop using the @kanyewest on the platform.
