Rao's reforms enabled coalition govts to deliver better results: Naidu
The Andhra CM is on a two-day visit to the national capital, where he is scheduled to meet PM Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and others. He met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday. In his meetings with the PM and Union ministers, Naidu will seek the Centre's support for projects in his state, release of pending funds, the Polavaram–Banakacherla river-linking project, and issues related to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) sources said.
On Tuesday evening, Naidu delivered a lecture on 'The Life and Legacy of P V Narasimha Rao' at the Prime Ministers Museum and Library (PMML) in the national capital. His lecture was the sixth in the PMML-organised Prime Ministers Lecture Series. He described Rao as a 'true Telugu bidda', or Telugu son of the soil, who 'reshaped the destiny' of India, and said the Telugu community is proud of his contributions. Rao, who passed away in December 2004, was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2024.
Referring to the recent controversy over some states accusing the Centre of imposing Hindi, Naidu said Rao had mastered 17 languages and serves as an inspiration in the current context. The Andhra CM said Rao, despite leading a minority government, accomplished the near-impossible task of forging consensus on economic reforms among socialists, communists, and capitalists alike.
Naidu credited Rao's prime ministerial tenure, and subsequently that of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, for India's first-mover advantage in the information technology sector and for building world-class infrastructure, especially in roads and telecommunications.
Naidu said that in 1978, when Deng launched China's economic reforms, both India and China were $140 billion economies, while the US economy was 15x larger at $2.3 trillion. Now, the US economy is only 1.5x bigger than China's, and more than 7x bigger than India's. 'They (China) are catching up (with the US). We are behind,' Naidu said, stressing that the journey from being the world's fourth- or third-largest economy to one of the top two will be much more challenging.
Naidu said 2014 was a turning point in India's growth story, with the country getting Modi as PM, who has 'ushered in a new era of bold and decisive leadership'. He said the goal is not just to grow fast, but to grow fairly, where every citizen, every region, and every sector shares the fruit of progress.
Citing World Bank data, he said India is among the top four most income-equal countries but stressed that the country still needs to become more equitable. He urged the top 10 per cent of India's wealthy to uplift the bottom 20 per cent, appealing to them to follow tech billionaire Bill Gates' example and 'give back to society'.
On his vision for Andhra, Naidu spoke about his government's Quantum Valley initiative in Amaravati. He urged youth to join politics and said the TDP's parliamentary party is the youngest in the Lok Sabha. He also noted that TDP's representative in the Union Cabinet, Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu, is the youngest minister at the Centre.
During his visit to Delhi, Naidu and Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy are also scheduled to attend a meeting on water issues being facilitated by the Centre on Wednesday. The Telangana government is expected to press the Centre to grant approvals and funds for its long-pending projects. It had earlier conveyed its objection to the Centre regarding Andhra's Banakacherla river-linking project, saying that it hurts Telangana's interests.

BJP chief issues legal notice to Dy CM over allegations in Rohith Vemula's death
BJP Telangana State President and senior advocate N. Ramachandra Rao has issued a legal notice to Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, accusing him of making defamatory remarks regarding the suicide of Hyderabad Central University research scholar Rohith Vemula. The notice, sent on Tuesday through Advocate M. Vijayakanth on behalf of Rao, demands an unconditional public apology from the Deputy Chief Minister within three days. The alleged remarks were made by Bhatti Vikramarka during a press conference held on July 12, 2025, at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi. According to the notice, Vikramarka accused Rao of instigating a chain of events that led to the suspension and eventual suicide of Rohith Vemula, a PhD scholar. The statements were widely broadcast by a Telugu television news channel and shared across social and print media platforms, resulting in what Rao described as severe reputational damage and public humiliation. The notice said that Rao, a designated Senior Advocate and former Member of the Legislative Council, emphasized his unblemished public service record spanning over four decades. The legal notice includes a detailed chronology of events related to the 2016 FIR filed against Rao and others, culminating in a final police report filed in March 2024. The report found no evidence to support the allegations, thereby clearing Rao of all charges. The notice also recalled the caste status of Rohith Vemula, stating that he was found to belong to the BC-A category, which casts doubt on the validity of his Scheduled Caste certificate—a key element in the original controversy. The notice accuses Vikramarka of making false and malicious statements with the intent to harm Rao's public and political reputation. It cites provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, including Sections 356(1), 356(2), 351(1), and 352, asserting that the Deputy CM's remarks constitute both civil and criminal defamation. Rao has warned that failure to issue a public apology within three days will result in legal proceedings. He is seeking Rs 25 crore in damages along with Rs 1 lakh towards the cost of the legal notice.

Big GST changes ahead? Centre signals green light, says report
India could soon see the biggest changes in its goods and services tax (GST) system since its launch eight years ago, reported The Economic Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has given an in-principle nod for a revamp of the GST structure, paving the way for possible reforms in the upcoming GST Council meeting scheduled for told ET that the finance ministry has already started internal discussions and will soon reach out to states to build consensus for the proposed changes. The official added that macroeconomic conditions are strong and stable, making this a good time to go ahead with the IN SLAB STRUCTUREThe biggest proposed change is a reduction in the number of tax slabs. GST currently has five main tax rates — nil, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% — along with two special rates of 0.25% and 3% for items like precious 5% slab covers about 21% of goods, 12% slab covers 19%, and 18% slab includes nearly 44% of goods. Only 3% of items fall under the highest 28% option under serious consideration is the removal of the 12% slab. In this plan, items under 12% could be shifted to either 5% or 18%, depending on the nature of the product. Hyderabad: Is Telangana Jagruthi president Kalvakuntla Kavitha increasingly isolated within her family and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party? The conspicuous silence of prominent family members, particularly regarding Teenmar Mallanna's recent controversial comments, strongly suggests a growing disconnect. Notably, party working president K T Rama Rao and T Harish Rao, who previously offered staunch support to Kavitha, even travelling to Delhi during her arrest in the Delhi Government liquor case, have remained surprisingly silent. Conversely, the Congress party has, unpredictably, extended support to Kavitha. Comments made by Teenmar Mallanna (Chintapandu Naveen) against Kavitha triggered Telangana Jagruthi activists, who subsequently attacked the office of the channel run by the Congress MLC. Complaints have been filed against Jagruthi leaders for the assault. In this episode, it took more than 24 hours for the BRS party to issue a response, and that too in the form of a press release by the Leader of Opposition in the Council, S Madhusudhana Chary. However, there has been no reaction from senior leaders like K T Rama Rao or Harish Rao, who frequently use X to express their opinions. Similarly, there has been no widespread outrage from the BRS cadre. In a contrasting incident, when a Telugu news channel aired reports about the party's working president with fake thumbnails, the BRS student's wing reportedly attacked the office, but no such organised attempt was seen from party leaders in Kavitha's defence. A day prior, BRS leaders K T Rama Rao and Harish Rao were summoned by party supremo K Chandrashekar Rao. It was anticipated that the party leaders would issue a statement on the Mallanna episode, but according to sources, no reference was made. The perceived rift began with the Jagruthi president Kavitha writing a five-page letter to her father, K Chandrashekar Rao, in which she questioned the party president on numerous issues. After returning from America, she stated there were 'demons' around K Chandrashekar Rao, hinting at internal differences. Following Kavitha's comments, K T Rama Rao told reporters that there were 'coverts of Revanth Reddy' within the party. After this incident, the BRS chief reportedly sent an emissary to meet Kavitha to resolve the differences, which temporarily halted speculations about internal discord. However, the Mallanna episode has once again brought this issue to the forefront. The BRS cadre has also been noticeably absent from calls issued by Kavitha. Party leaders skipped a dharna organised against a notice given to K Chandrashekar Rao. More recently, Telangana Jagruthi organised celebrations after the Congress government announced an ordinance to provide 42 per cent reservations to Backward Classes in local body elections, but no BRS leaders or activists were present at these celebrations. The unexpected comments from both BRS and Congress leaders have caused confusion among Kavitha's followers. Congress leaders, including PCC Chief Mahesh Goud and Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, objected to the comments made by Mallanna against Kavitha, affirming that Congress respects women. Apart from Madhusudhana Chary, BRS LB Nagar MLA D Sudheer Reddy condemned Mallanna's comments but also found fault with Jagruthi leaders for attacking the office, stating that attacks were not the solution in a democracy.
