Katie Piper's heartache after vile messages from bullies 17 years after acid attack
Katie Piper has revealed she's been the victim of cruel trolling as some have mistaken her acid attack scars for cosmetic procedures - telling her to 'lay off the plastic surgery'
Almost two decades on from being the victim of an acid attack, Katie Piper says she still gets strangers mistaking her scars for cosmetic procedures, with some even telling her to 'lay off the botox'.
While filming her recent TV series, Locked Up In Louisiana, Katie visited a prison in New Orleans, and faced a wave of verbal abuse from its female inmates over her injuries.
'Some of them shouted stuff like, 'Hey lady, are you addicted to Botox?' or 'Slow down on the plastic surgery',' recalls Katie, 41, during a new interview with Radio Times. She adds, 'They didn't know what had happened to me.'
In 2008, Katie was the victim of an attack orchestrated by her ex-boyfriend, where he instructed a man to throw sulphuric acid at her face - leading to the model losing sight in one eye.
The man, Stefan Sylvestre, was given a lifetime sentence for the attack, while Katie's ex-boyfriend was sentenced to 16 years in prison for planning the attack and for rape against Katie. She has had over 400 surgeries to repair the damage to her face and eyesight since.
The mum-of-two, who decided to get an artificial eye earlier this year, has since become a spokesperson for other victims of burns and began the Katie Piper Foundation, a charity to help others impacted, a year after her attack. In 2021, she was made an OBE for her services and charity work.
Now, Katie says that her past experiences earnt her the trust of prisoners in the New Orleans facility while filming for the upcoming show. However, the experience wasn't all positive as many accused her of having surgery for cosmetic reasons.
Sharing that she managed to relate to the prisoners on a deeper level while filming, the Loose Women panelist continued, 'We're all one bad day away from being locked up. You don't know what's going to happen to you in life and who's going to harm you – and how you're going to react when somebody harms you.'
Katie's experience with the prisoners isn't the first time she's been the victim of abuse for her scars, after her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2018 left her to deal with horrific comments from some viewers.
'I got some really horrible abuse, it was awful. I was told 'You look like a monster' by someone one night. It's so cruel. Then someone else said, 'Thank goodness for make-up.,' she told The Mail On Sunday.
But maintaining a strong exterior, Katie reiterated at the time that she was just 'so glad to be alive' following the attack.
Now a regular on the Loose Women panel alongside her new role as a presenter, Katie has been married to carpenter Richard James Sutton since 2015.
The couple share two children, ten-year-old Belle and Penelope, six. Katie's new four-part series, Locked Up In Louisiana, comes after several other documentary-style shows fronted by the star, including Katie Piper: Jailhouse Mums. The show is set to air on 27 April on UKTV's channel U.

But away from the spotlight, Jane has been through her fair share of challenges and heartache, having candidly spoken about her "failures and mistakes" in her recently published autobiography, Let the Light In. In the book, the 62-year-old singer and TV personality also reflected on the painful loss of her fiancé, Eddie Rothe, to lung cancer in 2021. As reported by OK!, the performer detailed a particularly tough period for Jane came in 2002, at a time when she was enjoying the height of her early fame and living in Florida with her second husband and manager Henrik Brixen. Despite previous years of sell-out performances, including shows in Las Vegas, and the anticipation of a new album and a BBC documentary, Jane found herself penniless. Article continues below This financial crisis led to the end of their five-year marriage and saw Jane returning to Wakefield at the age of 40 to start over, moving back in with her mother. She reflected: "I've had a few sticky moments and I've taken a lot of risks in my life, but I don't do fear any more". She then added: "I've been there, I've seen it, I've done it. I've got the T-shirt, I've washed it, I've dried it and then I've got another. "[Back then] I thought, 'I've had a chance at this [career] and it's gone, but I'll get it back.'". Jane faced her fair share of challenges but remained unaffected, reviving her presenting role on Loose Women from 2004 and rekindled her love for music. By 2010 she was gracing the stage of the London Palladium once more, and the following year she was topping the bill on her own tour. Yet, the end of 2018 brought the devastating news of her mother Jean's death, closely followed by the "sudden and shocking" loss of Eddie, marking a time of sorrow. Jane spoke of this tough phase in her life, acknowledging: "The two guiding lights in my life were Ed and my mother and I suppose losing both of them so quickly together was the hardest thing I've ever been through. "But I've joined a club of so many people who were in my position. I say to anybody now, 'Don't wallow for too long.'". "[Grief] takes a while and it will creep up on you when you least expect it, but if you can chase joy as much as you can, it's allowed. You don't have to feel guilt if you're laughing. Because we do. "We think, 'I can't possibly feel happy because I've lost them,' but we have to live the life that they wanted for us. Otherwise, what was the point?". "So I've taken every bit of wisdom from my mother - and she had lots of it - and all the love and all that fantastic relationship I had with Ed and I celebrate it now, I take them with me. "It's a way of accepting that you cannot change what's happened, but taking all that with you and moving forward. "Not moving on, because that means you're leaving them behind, but moving forward with them in your heart." After experiencing numerous highs and lows, including seeking help from a PTSD specialist due to difficulties in facing daily life, Jane did not find solace in writing about her past errors and recent sorrows. She confessed: "I didn't find it cathartic at all. I thought it was awful. I hated every minute of it because I'm not good at going back. I'm really not good at going back. But I suppose what is good is that I can say I did fail massively at this, but this is what I did to get out of it. "My world fell apart so many times, but this is what I did instead. I really hope it's going to help others, especially those coming into the industry." Jane recognised that grief had deeply changed her, but it also provided her with a new perspective on life. "It changes who you are," she mused. "It changes your life. It changes your plans. It robs you of every future you planned. But now I've got a different future and I intend to make it the best I possibly can. "I'm at that pace now where I'm 110 miles an hour, but I intend to slow down because life's gone like that [clicks her fingers]. You know, it's a big shock, losing Ed as quickly as I did, and it made me think, 'How many summers have I got left?'. Revealing her plans for the weekend, she said Harvey will be joining her on Saturday when she performs at Portsmouth Pride. Katie then added: "Hopefully Harvey starts his Mounjaro this week, but we'll talk about that next week and I'll go through all of what's happening about that." The mum-of-five previously opened up on how Harvey's life was at risk because of his size. The TV personality's eldest child has Prader-Willi syndrome, which sparks a constant desire to eat food and a permanent feeling of hunger which leads to obesity. Harvey battles a series of debilitating conditions including autism, septo-optic dysplasia, ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder. In a video posted in April, Katie revealed: 'I'm so heartbroken and gutted that his weight is just going up. 'I just googled it in stones, 188kg is just a few kg of being 30 stone. 'It's so life-threatening now, I'm still waiting for the doctors to get back to me starting on the mounjaro and his journey to a healthy life.' Wegovy – a modified version of type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic – and Mounjaro are the leading weight loss injections used in the UK. Wegovy, real name semaglutide, has been used on the NHS for years while Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a newer and more powerful addition to the market. Mounjaro accounts for most private prescriptions for weight loss and is set to join Wegovy as an NHS staple this year. How do they work? The jabs work by suppressing your appetite, making you eat less so your body burns fat for energy instead and you lose weight. They do this my mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which signals to the brain when the stomach is full, so the drugs are officially called GLP-1 receptor agonists. They slow down digestion and increase insulin production, lowering blood sugar, which is why they were first developed to treat type 2 diabetes in which patients' sugar levels are too high. Can I get them? NHS prescriptions of weight loss drugs, mainly Wegovy and an older version called Saxenda (chemical name liraglutide), are controlled through specialist weight loss clinics. Typically a patient will have to have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, classifying them as medically obese, and also have a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure. GPs generally do not prescribe the drugs for weight loss. Private prescribers offer the jabs, most commonly Mounjaro, to anyone who is obese (BMI of 30+) or overweight (BMI 25-30) with a weight-related health risk. Private pharmacies have been rapped for handing them out too easily and video calls or face-to-face appointments are now mandatory to check a patient is being truthful about their size and health. Are there any risks? Yes – side effects are common but most are relatively mild. Around half of people taking the drug experience gut issues, including sickness, bloating, acid reflux, constipation and diarrhoea. Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP and clinical consultant at said: 'One of the more uncommon side effects is severe acute pancreatitis, which is extremely painful and happens to one in 500 people.' Other uncommon side effects include altered taste, kidney problems, allergic reactions, gallbladder problems and hypoglycemia. Evidence has so far been inconclusive about whether the injections are damaging to patients' mental health. Figures obtained by The Sun show that, up to January 2025, 85 patient deaths in the UK were suspected to be linked to the medicines. In February Katie told The Sun she consulted top doctors who suggested starting Harvey on the jabs in a bid to improve his chances of living longer.
