Katie Piper's heartache after vile messages from bullies 17 years after acid attack

Daily Mirror21-04-2025
Katie Piper has revealed she's been the victim of cruel trolling as some have mistaken her acid attack scars for cosmetic procedures - telling her to 'lay off the plastic surgery'
Almost two decades on from being the victim of an acid attack, Katie Piper says she still gets strangers mistaking her scars for cosmetic procedures, with some even telling her to 'lay off the botox'.
While filming her recent TV series, Locked Up In Louisiana, Katie visited a prison in New Orleans, and faced a wave of verbal abuse from its female inmates over her injuries.

'Some of them shouted stuff like, 'Hey lady, are you addicted to Botox?' or 'Slow down on the plastic surgery',' recalls Katie, 41, during a new interview with Radio Times. She adds, 'They didn't know what had happened to me.'
In 2008, Katie was the victim of an attack orchestrated by her ex-boyfriend, where he instructed a man to throw sulphuric acid at her face - leading to the model losing sight in one eye.
The man, Stefan Sylvestre, was given a lifetime sentence for the attack, while Katie's ex-boyfriend was sentenced to 16 years in prison for planning the attack and for rape against Katie. She has had over 400 surgeries to repair the damage to her face and eyesight since.
The mum-of-two, who decided to get an artificial eye earlier this year, has since become a spokesperson for other victims of burns and began the Katie Piper Foundation, a charity to help others impacted, a year after her attack. In 2021, she was made an OBE for her services and charity work.
Now, Katie says that her past experiences earnt her the trust of prisoners in the New Orleans facility while filming for the upcoming show. However, the experience wasn't all positive as many accused her of having surgery for cosmetic reasons.

Sharing that she managed to relate to the prisoners on a deeper level while filming, the Loose Women panelist continued, 'We're all one bad day away from being locked up. You don't know what's going to happen to you in life and who's going to harm you – and how you're going to react when somebody harms you.'
Katie's experience with the prisoners isn't the first time she's been the victim of abuse for her scars, after her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2018 left her to deal with horrific comments from some viewers.

'I got some really horrible abuse, it was awful. I was told 'You look like a monster' by someone one night. It's so cruel. Then someone else said, 'Thank goodness for make-up.,' she told The Mail On Sunday.
But maintaining a strong exterior, Katie reiterated at the time that she was just 'so glad to be alive' following the attack.
Now a regular on the Loose Women panel alongside her new role as a presenter, Katie has been married to carpenter Richard James Sutton since 2015.
The couple share two children, ten-year-old Belle and Penelope, six. Katie's new four-part series, Locked Up In Louisiana, comes after several other documentary-style shows fronted by the star, including Katie Piper: Jailhouse Mums. The show is set to air on 27 April on UKTV's channel U.

Strictly drug scandal, sexual slurs, 'Z-list' line-up - will it survive another year?

Strictly Come Dancing has been plagued by scandals, but it's still winging its way to our screens in September, despite some viewers calling for its axe Strictly Come Dancing has been sullied by scandals over the last few years, tarnishing its former family-friendly reputation. Kicking off in 2023 with the drama surrounding Giovanni Pernice - who was accused of bullying Sherlock star, Amada Abbington - the show's reputation as the jewel in the Beeb's crown seemed to be perilously precarious. ‌ After Giovanni was cleared of some but not all of the charges against him made by Amanda, his fellow Italian Graziano di Primo was also given the boot after footage of him appearing to kick Love Island star, Zara McDermott, in the rehearsal studio was leaked. ‌ Graziano apologised after his exit from Strictly, insisting: "I wasn't meaning to kick her. I'd never, never do that. My foot brushed her after I kicked the floor." But viewers weren't happy, with many urging the BBC to pull the plug. It comes as a PR expert has warned that Strictly is facing an identity crisis. ‌ A slew of scandals In more drama for the dance series, Go Compare star, Wynne Evans, was seen with his hand creeping around Katya Jones' waist in an alleged "in joke" between the pair last year. The Welsh warbler was then axed from the show's tour after making an alleged sexual slur about Janette Manrara and has now been let go by the BBC completely. And just when the show had seemed, for a second, scandal-free, Strictly was hit by another bombshell when it was claimed that two of its stars were high on cocaine and boozing during filming. When contacted by the Mirror about the claims its stars were drinking on set and being 'monitored', the BBC said it did "not recognise the claims and any suggestion that anyone has been asked to monitor an individual is completely untrue". However, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that they are investigating a drug allegation related to the BBC' s hit programme. This investigation after fresh reports that external lawyers Pinsent Masons began an inquiry into the dance competition, just days after its 14th celebrity contestant was confirmed. They previously launched an inquiry into the show after claims that two of its stars had used the Class A drug, cocaine in a long list of controversies the show has faced in the past few years. ‌ 'Z-list' line-up Scandals aside, there's also pressure on the show after it revealed an 'underwhelming' line-up, announcing the class of 2025. Strictly will return to our screens this autumn for the 23rd series, but some fans say they have already been left feeling short-changed. To crank up the excitement, the show's social media team has been dropping an announcement for each contestant. Among the names we can expect to see on the show including Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Love Island's Dani Dyer and Doctor Who star Alex Kingston. While some excitement simmered for the likes of Vicky Pattinson and YouTube star George Clarke, plenty of people were left wanting more. As BBC bosses revealed Lioness and broadcaster Karen Carney and Hollywood correspondent for Lorraine, Ross King, viewers spoke up. ‌ Strictly fans were quick to flood the comments of the post with their opinions – and many of them didn't hold back. One user wrote: "Not really into the lineup this year. It feels a little underwhelming for me." Another person mused: "Is it me, or are they really scraping the barrel for these 'celebrities'? It feels like the Z-list reboot." So can Strictly survive? The short answer is yes. Despite the slew of scandals that have surrounded it in recent years, the show still has a legion of loyal viewers who look forward to tuning in every week to see the celebrities chance their arm in a tough arena as they learn a new skill and usually something cute about themselves. ‌ The programme is still one of the BBCs' biggest exports, with many viewers defending Strictly despite some urging for it to be axed after 21 years in wake of the bad press that has surrounded it. 'You can't blame Strictly for the douchebags' After Channel 5's Jeremy Vine Show debated whether it was time for the show to end, many took to X to advocate for the show. ‌ Ahead of the new series, one declared: "I love Strictly and look forward to it! Only good thing about autumn" as another said: "Don't be ridiculous it's a great show !!" A third wrote: "No. It's one of the best shows on tv and just because something gets mentioned in a paper. Doesn't make it true." Meanwhile, a fourth stated that you can't blame Strictly for "some of the douche bags" caught up in the controversy, posting: "You seriously can't blame the show, which is hugely popular for some of the douchebags that manage to get on it. If you go around every tv show or work place, you're going to find wrong-uns! Ridiculous hysteria." The new series of Strictly starts in September, where it will, hopefully, be heavy on sequins and low on scandals.

BBC The One Show's Roman Kemp's struggle to find happiness after heartbreaking family comment

The One Show star Roman Kemp has opened up about his desire to have a family and how he believes it will be the moment he finds "true happiness" The One Show's Roman Kemp has confessed that he believes he hasn't yet found "true happiness". The 32 year old star has opened up about his longing to start a family one day. ‌ Roman, who is famously close with his parents, Spandau Ballet bassist Martin Kemp and former Wham! singer Shirlie Holliman, has often spoken about their unique parenting style. During an appearance on Loose Women in 2019, Martin revealed that he and Shirlie chose to raise Roman and his sister Harley more like "friends" than children. ‌ Roman has described this approach as a "best friend thing", admitting it made it easier for him to confide in his parents. ‌ Now, the former Capital Breakfast host has shared his hopes of having a family of his own, believing that it will bring him a "sense of true happiness". He made this revelation while discussing the concept of success with pop star and good mate Tom Grennan, reports the Express. Roman elaborated: "I don't think I'll ever have that feeling of success until I have kids I can look at and go, 'We did alright'. My parents never, ever said to us, 'You need to be this, you've got to do that job, all my parents ever asked is, 'Are you happy?' All of those types of things and that, I think, would define success for me over anything." When asked by Tom if he was happy, Roman replied: "Sometimes, but you're not human if you're happy all the time. It's working out work-life balance and that's what I've tried to do ever since I left Capital. That's one of the reasons that I left because I didn't have that, I didn't have a work-life balance, I didn't understand it. "You'll know, when I send you a picture of a scan, or something like that, or when I tell you my child has been born, when I send you that text, you'll know f*****g hell, he's happy. Because I don't think I've had that yet, that sense of true happiness." ‌ The star, who often shares the screen with his dad on shows like Celebrity Gogglebox, Martin and Roman's Weekend Best! and Bromans, revealed his hopes for his future children to see their bond. In an interview with Hello! magazine, he shared: "My dad and I get to work with each other all the time and I'm so lucky for that. The reason we work together is because I know how much I'm going to love my kids and my family watching that footage of me and their grandad working together - and that's just our relationship." This comes as Roman is rumoured to be engaged to model Carmen Gaggero. As reported by WalesOnline, the couple have been an item since last year and made their relationship public last summer after being seen leaving Le Petit Maison in Mayfair. Speculation about an engagement started when Carmen was spotted with a ring on her engagement finger during a night out in London. According to the publication, pals reckon Roman is prepared to "settle down". Roman will be returning to screens on The One Show from 7pm on BBC One tonight alongside co-host Clara Amfo. The pair will be joined by Gemma Arterton and Thomas Brodie-Sangster who will be discussing the film Grand Prix of Europe.

Loose Women star Frankie Bridge has been sharing her go-to beauty buys on social media, including a £28 concealer that 'covers all imperfections' Frankie Bridge fans have been desperate to know which products the ITV star used in a recent clip she shared to social media. The Loose Women panellist posted a makeup tutorial on Instagram earlier this month, showing her followers what items she loves to use on holiday. Frankie could be seen using Estée Lauder's Double Wear Concealer that can be purchased on Sephora from £28. This beauty buy has been hailed as the 'best concealer' by several reviewers, and it boasts an average overall rating of 4.5 out of five stars. The oil-free concealer comes in eight shades and is said to offer transfer-resistant, medium coverage in a matte finish. Frankie listed all of the makeup products she applied during her Instagram video in a post on shopping app LTK. Other items the former Saturdays singer used include the KOSAS Cloud Set Airy Setting Mist which costs £34 on Cult Beauty. This top-rated product promises to lock makeup in place for up to 12 hours. Frankie also featured the £32 Vieve Modern Radiance Cream Bronzer which comes in light to deep shades. The lightweight formula is enriched with nourishing ingredients to leave skin smooth. For those looking to emulate Frankie's look with other concealers, I swear by the Huda Beauty #FAUXFILTER Concealer for £26 at Boots. One reviewer said of the product: "Amazing, perfect shade match and very hydrating." Our beauty team also love the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer that's £28 on LookFantastic. It's described as long-wearing and provides medium to full coverage. With 30 shades available, shoppers can find a colour for every skin tone. Beauty fans were swooning over Frankie's holiday makeup look after she posted her tutorial to Instagram, with one person saying: "You are like the goddess of beauty!" Another was keen to buy the items Frankie applied, saying: "Frankie could you link all the products you used please?" In reviews for the ITV star's Estée Lauder concealer, shoppers have raved about how how the long-lasting the product is. One person said: A little goes a long way! Lasts all day and great coverage." A second wrote: "I have been using this product for the last 5 years. It is the best concealer that I have used. I am satisfied and happy with it." However, someone else wasn't as pleased, adding: "Great product, I found it a little thin and coverage doesn't last all day." Another customer did enjoy their purchase though, writing: "I have tried every concealer out there and this one is my favourite. It truly covers all my imperfections. I am 57 and I won't buy any other brand. I absolutely love this product."
