
Social Media Reveals IBS Woes Missed by Clinics
An analysis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-related posts on X reveals discussions spanning symptoms, dietary triggers, peer support, and mental health — suggesting that traditional healthcare settings may not fully meet patients' needs and underscoring the value of integrating social media insights into IBS care models.
METHODOLOGY:
Social media platforms like X are frequentlly used to share health experiences and provide patient-generated insights.
Researchers analyzed 12,345 IBS-related posts on X (April 2006-August 2024), using search terms capable of capturing user experiences and concerns.
The dataset was processed to retain relevant information from texts and emojis. Posts with fewer than three words were removed.
Sentiment analysis (score range, -1 to +1) was applied to 8864 posts, which were classified as positive, neutral, or negative.
Topic modeling was applied to 2532 posts with ≥ 50 words to identify core subjects and themes.
TAKEAWAY:
Sentiment was primarily neutral (45.9%), followed by positive (35.4%) and negative (18.7%), suggesting that users often shared advice or information rather than strong emotions. Sentiment remained relatively consistent over time, with fluctuations linked to major IBS-related milestones (eg, new diagnostic criteria, high-profile publications, awareness campaigns).
Main post themes included physical symptoms (15.6%), diet/triggers (15.1%), social support (14.2%), comorbidities (12.2%), research and treatment (12.2%), quality of life (12.0%), awareness (11.5%), and mental health (7.2%).
Posts on physical symptoms had the highest proportion of negative sentiment (32.4%), whereas social support post were the most positive (53.7%). Mental health and research/treatment posts were mostly neutral due to their educational or informational nature.
Post contributors included self-identified IBS patients (61.3%), healthcare professionals (12.8%), organizations/advocacy groups (10.5%), and general commenters (15.4%).
IN PRACTICE:
'Patients turn to social media primarily because of unmet informational needs regarding day-to-day symptom management (evidenced by the prevalence of dietary and trigger discussions) and desires for experiential validation that clinical encounters may not provide (demonstrated by the high engagement with personal narrative content),' the authors wrote.

Study reveals the foods which help avoid illness in later life
What you eat could determine how many chronic illnesses you get later in life, scientists warn. Research has revealed that a healthy diet - such as the Mediterranean diet which is high in plants, fish and unsaturated fats - could slow down the accumulation of chronic diseases including dementia in older adults. Inflammatory diets full of processed meat and sugar may accelerate it. Researchers from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden studied four diets to investigate their impact on chronic diseases in older adults. Three of the diets studied were healthy and focused on the intake of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts, legumes, unsaturated fats and reduced intake of sweets, red meat, processed meat and butter/margarine. The fourth diet, however, was pro-inflammatory and focused on red and processed meat, refined grains and sweetened beverages, with lower intake of vegetables, tea and coffee. Researchers followed the diets of 2,400 adults aged 60 and older in Sweden for 15 years and tracked their chronic conditions. Dietary intake was measured using food frequency questionnaires, and adherence to four dietary patterns: the Empirical Dietary Inflammatory Index (EDII), AHEI, the Alternate Mediterranean Diet (AMED), and the MIND (Mediterranean–DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay). Multimorbidity was defined as the number of chronic diseases and grouped by organ system - musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and neuropsychiatric. The results published in the journal Nature Aging revealed those who followed the healthy diets had a slower development of chronic diseases. For example, long-term adherence to healthy dietary patterns, particularly the AMED, AHEI, and MIND, was linked to a slower accumulation of chronic diseases in older adults. This applied to cardiovascular disease and dementia, but not to diseases related to muscles and bones. But those who followed the pro-inflammatory diet, on the other hand, increased their risk of chronic diseases. 'Our results show how important diet is in influencing the development of multimorbidity in ageing populations,' said co-first author Adrián Carballo-Casla, postdoctoral researcher at the Aging Research Centre, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Karolinska Institutet. The protective effects of diet may be explained by reduced inflammation, a key factor in aging-related diseases. Study authors want to further their research by identify the dietary recommendations that may have the greatest impact on longevity and the groups of older adults who may benefit most from them, based on their age, gender, psychosocial background and chronic diseases.

Millions on NHS waiting lists yet to have first appointment
Millions of people in England on NHS waiting lists are yet to have their first appointment, new data reveal. Figures from NHS England last month suggest nearly half of those waiting for hospital care have not had their first appointment with a specialist or a diagnostic test since their GP referral. An analysis by health data specialist MBI Health suggests nearly three million out of the 6.23 million patients (48 per cent) waiting for treatment are left in limbo. Experts referred to the issue as a 'frontlog' and warned the crisis 'has gone unchallenged for too long'. MBI's analysis also found that around 70 per cent of referral-to-treatment pathways fall into the category of being 'unseen' since the patient's GP referred them to a specialist. Delays in making a first assessment can lead to late diagnosis, worsening symptoms and pressure on emergency services. The analysis found that ear, nose and throat, trauma and orthopaedics, gastroenterology, ophthalmology and gynaecology and obstetrics departments were consistently the specialist departments with the greatest number of patients not seen for the first time. 'That's a breakdown' As part of the Government's 10-year health plan, the NHS is expected to meet its target of carrying out 92 per cent of routine operations and appointments within 18 weeks by March 2029 – a target that has not been achieved for almost a decade. The latest figures show how challenging that target will be given an estimated one million of the three million unseen patients have already gone more than 18 weeks without receiving any care. 'If accurate, three million people are trapped in an invisible waiting-list crisis, stuck without basic diagnostic tests of first appointments while their conditions worsen,' Rachel Power, the chief executive of the Patients Association, told the Guardian. 'The scale is staggering, as nearly half of all patients on a waiting list haven't been seen by anyone. That's not a healthcare service; that's a breakdown. 'These aren't just statistics. The figures, analysed by the PA news agency, showed 56.1 per cent of those on the list at the end of June this year were of working age (defined as age 19 to 64), up from 55.8 per cent a year ago and 55 per cent in June 2022. At the same time, the proportion of people on the waiting list under the age of 19 has fallen, standing at 10.8 per cent in June this year, down from 11.2 per cent a year earlier and 11.9 per cent in June 2022. The proportion who are over 65 has remained broadly unchanged at around 33.1 per cent. People of working age are also more likely to have to wait more than a year to start treatment (three per cent of patients in this age group at the end of June) than those over 65 (two and half per cent). However, the proportion is the same as those under 19 (also three per cent). An NHS spokesman said: 'NHS staff have made significant progress in reducing waiting lists in the last year, which are down by more than 260,000 since June 2024. 'All patients are assessed by clinicians as they are added to waiting lists, and we will continue with our plan to improve waiting times for patients throughout the year.'
