Why Did Cartridge Oil Filters Replace Spin-Ons In New Cars?
Whether it's the cartridge or spin-on type, oil filters are one of the most important components of an engine, which is ironic since their cost is so modest; almost certainly less than $20 and possibly less than $5 if you're a dedicated Walmart shopper. Oil filters remove contaminants like flecks of carbon, dust, and tiny metallic particles that result from engine wear. That keeps your oil clean in the miles driven between oil changes, which are less frequent than ever in this age of superior oil technology. That said, there's a limit to the size of particles that a typical oil filter can remove without creating a restriction to oil flow. If you want finer filtration still, consider installing a bypass oil filter in addition to the factory full-flow filter.

Pay Attention With Either Style Filter
The first oil filters debuted over 100 years ago, in 1923. Prior to that, engines either used no filter at all or, at best, an ineffective metal screen. Those early oil filters were all cartridge style because the spin-on type wasn't invented until 1954. When a modern cartridge-style oil filter is purchased, the package typically contains only the naked pleated filter element itself, plus a pair of new o-rings; one for the filter housing and one for the housing's center tube. The center tube returns oil to the engine and gives the cartridge filter its rigidity. The filter housing, often plastic, is reused many times or possibly forever if it stays in good condition.
On the other hand, spin-on filters are self-contained. The filter media is sealed inside a metal canister with an integral gasket or o-ring already pre-installed. Like the name implies, you simply screw it onto a male-threaded mounting boss on the engine once the old filter has been removed. It's worth mentioning that with spin-on filters, you should double check that the old gasket or o-ring came off with the old filter and didn't stay attached to the engine block. Otherwise, the two stacked gaskets will create sealing problems, at a minimum. Whether tightening either a cartridge oil filter housing or a spin-on filter, make sure it's not cross-threaded, nor screwed on too damn tight.
Cartridge-Style Oil Filters Are More Eco-Friendly
Shortly after its introduction, the spin-on filter dominated the market, particularly among American auto manufacturers that re-engineered their engines to accept this new invention. For example, the most produced engine ever, Chevy's small-block V8, was converted from cartridge to spin-on filter in the mid-1960s. The spin-on filter was considered to be quicker and easier to replace, although that's certainly debatable. A cartridge oil filter mounted on top of an engine is arguably easier and neater than wrestling with one attached to the bottom of an engine block under the car.
So while the spin-on oil filter was the latest and greatest for a while, plenty of cars continue to use cartridge filters to this day. That's especially true of European brands and German marques in particular. Recently, cartridge oil filters are regaining ground versus the spin-on type amongst automakers because of environmental concerns. Cartridge filters are just more environmentally friendly, since unlike a spin-on filter, most of the assembly gets reused and there's no integrated dirty metal housing that requires disposal again and again.
According to parts manufacturer Ecogard, more than 70 million used automotive filters are disposed of each year in the state of California alone. Furthermore, the amount of steel contained in one year's worth of discarded spin-on oil filters from just California is enough to build three sports stadiums. Regardless of what type of oil filter your vehicle uses, the quality and filtration ability of the element inside is what's really important. Hmm, maybe that $2.97 Walmart oil filter isn't such a great idea after all?

Ford Says It Will Deliver the Dream of Truly Modular Skateboard EVs
The latest car news, reviews, and features. We're about 15 years into an era of practical electric cars. For much of that time, we've been hearing about the potential of the 'skateboard' chassis—an EV can be anything, just drop it on top of a structural battery deck. But so far, no automaker has really run with this to efficiently crank out dramatically different cars on one platform. Ford, however, might finally deliver. This week, Ford shared plans to radically change the way it assembles cars. Not only is the Blue Oval brand planning to expand its EV offerings, but it's also positioning itself to make them more affordable and diverse. The '$30,000 electric truck' announcement yesterday caught our attention as car enthusiasts, but really, the Ford Universal EV Platform and Ford Universal EV Production System are a much bigger deal for the industry. By building cars in three parallel processes—the skateboard chassis, the front, and the rear—Ford can theoretically build basically anything from trucks to sedans to sports cars and vans at the same facility, using the same structural belly. The company's goal is surely to cut production costs and increase margins, but it could also represent a huge opportunity for choice on our consumer end of the deal. It was a particularly interesting development to learn about yesterday, since it was only about three months ago that Ford reportedly scrapped its next-gen zonal electrical architecture ideas, for ICE cars and EVs, pivoting to cultivating existing systems. Essentially, the company decided that by integrating some aspects of its canceled FNV4 networked-vehicle plans—like module software and central control—into its existing architecture, Ford figured it could still offer things like over-the-air updates without spending quite as much money as it'd need to build an all-new zonal system from scratch. I guess a compromise was achieved, because a big bragging point from Ford's announcement yesterday was about electric architecture commitments. 'Take for instance the wiring harness in the new midsize truck; it will be more than 4,000 feet (1.3 kilometers) shorter and 10 kilograms lighter than the one used in our first-gen electric SUV,' proclaims the press release. If Ford lives up to the Universal EV Production System's promises, then the Ford Universal EV Platform has a great chance of delivering on the dream of having a super-diverse vehicular lineup on one skateboard. In other words, Ford may have found the optimal zonal architecture solution for legacy automakers. Now, obviously, platform sharing has been around forever. There are plenty of disparate gas cars based on shared underpinnings. Ford's not the first to build different EVs on one shared skateboard, either—the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform is one such example already in production. Volkswagen spent a lot of resources trying to figure out zonal architecture, too, before deciding to just buy it from Rivian. But that's not exactly why I think Ford may do this better than VW. Despite regularly leading the industry in recalls, and killing its entire sedan and subcompact lineup, Ford knows how to have fun. Look at how many Raptors there are, Mustang variants like the GTD, funky Tremor trims on work trucks large and small. While Volkswagen is laying one egg-shaped vehicle after another, I'm hopeful that Ford will run a little wilder and squeeze a wider range of vehicle types from its new platform. And not for nothing, Ford's had more time to refine its plans and optimize factory efficiency. On a media briefing call yesterday, Ford's people talked a lot about how much casting tech had improved, giving them the bandwidth to stamp out more body types more quickly. I haven't been too optimistic about the future in general lately, but if Ford substantiates its claims of making electric cars affordable and unique within the next few years, I'll welcome that change to the industry. Rates Of Passage: Here's How Much It Costs To Insure A Teenage Driver, Data Shows
Being able to legally drive a car is a major milestone that officially begins the passage from adolescence to adulthood. To a freshly licensed teenage driver it means newfound freedom. To his or her parents it means being unshackled from the unrelenting cycle of pick-ups, drop-offs and carpooling. But watching a son or daughter pull out of the driveway in the family car for the first time is not without its trepidations. While teenagers tend to drive fewer miles than all age groups except senior citizens, the frequency of crashes in that demographic tend to be disproportionately high; they remain among the leading cause of deaths among Americans ages 13 to 19 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And that folks, in a nutshell is why it's so expensive to add a teen driver to the family's auto insurance coverage. How expensive? You might want to sit down for this if you have multiple kids getting their learners' permits. According to a recent study conducted by the insurance website adding a 16-year-old driver to an auto insurance policy in the U.S. will cause annual premiums to skyrocket by an average $3,252. That's a whopping 157.9% boost. And that's just the average amount. As with virtually everything to do with insurance, premiums vary by state, based on a variety of factors. According to ValuePenguin, those living in Rhode Island suffer the heftiest hikes to insure a new driver, at an average 225.3% increase, which translates into annual full-coverage rates that are $5,828 higher. Hawaii, in addition to being considered a paradise, is the state in which parents get the biggest break in this regard, with annual premiums rising by just 4.7% when adding a 16-year-old to a family's policy – a mere $74 upsurge. That's because Hawaii stands out as the only U.S. state that prohibits age discrimination when determining auto insurance rates. We're listing the 10 states being the costliest and most-affordable in which to cover a 16-year-old motorist below. Not only does one's age come into play when a given insurer determine its rates, gender likewise plays a dominant role, especially among the youngest drivers. That's because according to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, two of every three teenagers killed in vehicle crashes are males. The CDC found that 35% of male motorists under the age of 20 that were involved in a fatal collision were speeding, compared to 18% of female drivers. In addition, either through inexperience or inattentiveness, teen drivers in general are found to more often make dubious choices behind the wheel. The CDC says that 56% of teen motorists involved in fatal wrecks weren't wearing seatbelts, 29% were drinking and 39% admitted to texting or emailing while driving over the previous 30 days. "Insurance companies set rates based on the likelihood a driver will be involved in a crash resulting in a claim, and how severe that crash is likely to be," explains ValuePenguin auto insurance expert Divya Sangameshwar. 'If a driver is more likely to crash or more prone to rash driving behaviors, the higher the insurer sets the premium because they face a greater risk of paying out a claim.' Fortunately for all concerned parties, insurance rates decline as a teenager blossoms into a full-fledged adult. ValuePenguin data shows an average $1,100 drop in annual premiums when a young driver reaches the age of 21, and another $1,631 drop when he or she turns 25. Fortunately, there are several ways parents can help mitigate the unavoidable cost of insuring a teenage driver. For starters, shop around competing insurers, both when adding a new driver to the family's policy and at least annually thereafter, to find the most-affordable coverage at that particular point in time as circumstances warrant. Also be sure to leverage all applicable discounts that can help soften the financial blow when adding a teen driver to an insurance policy. These include taking a defensive driving course (up to a 15% savings), maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or higher (10-25%), and having a telematics device installed that can prove he or she is a safe driver (10-40%). Though it's a stretch at a time when their friends are all behind the wheel, delaying licensing until a son or daughter graduates college or turns 25 will result in the lowest average rate increases. If that's not an option, rates can fall by as much as 25% if a 21-year-old college student forgoes driving off to college (when not coincidentally he or she reaches the legal drinking age) via an 'away from school' discount. And just as auto insurance rates vary based on age, gender, address and one's driving record, they're also determined based on the vehicle one drives. It's best to get a teen driver behind the wheel of a model that's reasonably inexpensive to purchase and repair, tends to be driven gently, and has top crash-test ratings and full slate of safety features. Avoid upscale rides that inherently cost a fortune to fix if gotten into a wreck, along with high-performance models that practically beg to be driven aggressively.
