Haute Priests—Dolce & Gabbana Present Their Alta Sartoria at Rome's Castel Sant'Angelo

Vogue16-07-2025
How do you follow a women's show of Fellini-esque proportions at the Roman Forum? If you're Dolce & Gabbana, with a men's show at the Ponte di Castel Sant'Angelo. The circa 134 AD bridge was built by Emperor Hadrian to connect Rome's city center to his future mausoleum. Over the centuries, the ancient builing was transformed into a medeival fortress, a papal residence, and the backdrop for a scene in Roman Holiday. Tonight the castle was lit up like a movie set with klieg lights and scores of Cinecittà extras vamping as cardinals.
Conclave II might be a good name for the would-be film. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana took priestly garb as their subject, and they left no hem unturned in their study, which ranged from the ascetic to the ornate, emphasis on the ornate: There were starched linen tunics that looked like fashionable updates to the traditional surplice, double-breasted suits dressed up with bejeweled crosses, and dramatic papal robes lavished with crystal embroideries.

Look of the Week: Lindsay Lohan just recreated this iconic ‘Freaky Friday' costume

EDITOR'S NOTE: Featuring the good, the bad and the ugly, 'Look of the Week' is a regular series dedicated to unpacking the most talked about outfit of the last seven days. Over two decades have passed since the release of Disney's comedy film 'Freaky Friday,' but at the sequel's premiere in London on Thursday, it seemed like no time at all. Chemistry abound between Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan — who are reprising their roles as mother Tess Coleman and daughter Anna — as they posed for photos amongst confetti. Even the red carpet was designed in lilac and green, reminiscent of the poster artwork for the original 2003 film. Lohan, who starred in the first film when she was just 16 years old, amped up the nostalgia further with her choice of outfit: a custom lavender metal mesh dress by Ludovic de Saint Sernin, which was embellished with Swarovski crystals, and a sparkling Judith Leiber guitar-shaped purse. For eagle-eyed fans, the ensemble might have looked familiar. It was an ode to one of the original 'Freaky Friday' costumes designed by Genevieve Tyrrell. In the film, after switching bodies for a day, Tess and Anna reach a nirvana of empathy and understanding. Tess accepts Anna's ambitions of becoming a professional musician, while Anna comes to terms with her mother's new relationship. In the closing scene, Anna performs with her band at her mother's wedding, wearing a lilac-colored lace-trimmed two piece by cult 1990s fashion label Mandalay, which served as the inspiration for Sernin's custom gown. 'I've been dreaming and manifesting this moment for nearly 20 years,' Sernin wrote on Instagram. He also thanked Andrew Mukamal, Lohan's influential stylist, who has been widely credited with popularizing method dressing after dressing Margot Robbie in a series of doll-like outfits for the 'Barbie' press tour in 2023. This is the second time Lohan has paid homage to her 'Freaky Friday' character through her fashion choices. Last month, she was photographed in a leather miniskirt and a tee emblazoned with the words 'Pink Slip' — the name of her band in the film. From the recent 'Beetlejuice' reboot to the release of 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' the seventh film in its franchise, millennial nostalgia is driving a number of cultural moments in the film industry — and beyond. 'Freaky Friday' is one such example of a cinematic relic that has stood the test of time. At the premiere, Curtis told the BBC she was inspired to take part in the sequel because the film was 'beloved, all over the world.' Lohan agreed. 'The fans love the movie. And that's really important,' she said. 'It makes you want to do it again.' But perhaps no fan was as excited as Sernin himself. 'I feel overwhelmed with joy and love right now,' he wrote. 'It's a full-circle moment for me.'

Amal Clooney Brings the Disco to Lake Como

Balance is restored in the universe: at long last, George and Amal Clooney have returned to Lake Como. The actor and human rights lawyer tend to spend the summer months in palatial Italian waterfront villas. But with George's recent starring role in Good Night, and Good Luck on Broadway, the pair have deferred their Euro summer…until now. Earlier this week, the Clooneys returned to Lake Como, where they were ferried to dinner at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo—one of their date night stalwarts—via water taxi. For the occasion, Amal opted for a one-shoulder knee-length dress from Badgley Mischka. The barrister's outfit was not wont for sparkle, from its silver sequins to its wraparound silver fringe and matching hem. She accessorized with a pair of strappy silver heels and a miniature clutch. And, of course, no look is complete without her go-to beachy waves. COBRA TEAM / BACKGRIDUSA This isn't the first time Amal has brought Studio 54 glamour to Lake Como. In 2023, she celebrated date night in a glittering silver chainmail babydoll minidress from Rabanne. And at the inaugural Albie Awards in 2022, she gave her signature sparkle the flapper treatment in a 1920s-inspired Versace dress. With all of August still ahead of us, we're sure that Amal Clooney has some more show-stopping looks up her sleeve.

Julian Schnabel to Receive Venice Festival's Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award

American artist and director Julian Schnabel (At Eternity's Gate, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Basquiat) will be honored with the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, Cartier and the Venice festival announced Wednesday. The annual prize recognizes a personality who has made an especially original contribution to contemporary cinema. Schnabel will be honored at an award ceremony on Wednesday, September 3, at the Sala Grande, ahead of the out-of-competition screening of his new film In the Hand of Dante. Schnabel and Louise Kugelberg adapted the film from Tosches' novel. Oscar Issac, playing Tosches and Dante, leads an ensemble cast that includes Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, Al Pacino, John Malkovich, Martin Scorsese, Jason Momoa, Louis Cancelmi, and Franco Nero. Produced by DreamCrew Entertainment, MeMo Films, TWIN Productions and Artofficial Productions, In the Hand of Dante is being sold internationally by WME Independent. 'I first stepped foot in Venice in November of 1976,' said Schnabel, accepting the honor. 'At the time, I went to Padua to see the Scrovegni Chapel of Giotto and to see the paintings in Venice. I never dreamed that I would become a filmmaker, let alone be honored with this award, and be included alongside so many filmmakers I admire, because in fact I am a painter. But I guess I am a filmmaker as well. I've now shown my films at the Venice Film Festival for almost 30 years, and to receive the Glory to the Filmmaker Award for the world premiere of my new film In the Hand of Dante means so much to me, as tracking Dante and Nick's trajectory in this film has somehow mirrored my own life. Thank you. I couldn't be happier about this.' Festival director Alberto Barbera praised Schnabel's originality and artistic vision: 'Each of Julian Schnabel's films is a world of its own. None is like the one before or the one after. Yet, it is not a coincidence that most of them are portraits of artists and passionate depictions of the artistic process. As generous as it is wildly imaginative, Schnabel's cinematic output is a gift to film, articulated through a wholly original language. His new feature, In the Hand of Dante, is his most ambitious project to date. As Martin Scorsese said when asked to describe them, Schnabel's films are 'abundant, overflowing and vibrating with life, pulse. There is always more in the frame to see, to experience, and to feel.' Born in New York City in 1951 and raised in Brownsville, Texas, Schnabel first achieved acclaim as a painter in New York during the late 1970s. He has exhibited at the Venice Biennale Art Exhibition five times (1980, 1982, 1993, 1997 and 2003). His directorial debut Basquiat, about the renowned New York street artist, premiered in competition at Venice in 1996. Follow up Before Night Falls (2000), starring Javier Bardem as Cuban poet and novelist, Reinaldo Arenas, won the Venice Grand Jury Prize. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the story of Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby and the stroke that almost totally paralyzed him; won best director in Cannes in 2007 and picked up the Golden Globe for best foreign film. His 2018 feature At Eternity's Gate, starring Willem Dafoe as Vincent van Gogh, won Dafoe Venice's best actor honor. The 2025 Venice film festival runs Aug. 27-Sept. 6.
