Mr. Somanna, who is also MP from Tumakuru, and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, chaired a meeting with elected representatives of Tumakuru and other districts and decided to take a final decision on the project after the spot inspection of the works done so far and feasibility of the supplying water to other districts.
Farmers and BJP, and JD(S) leaders accused the ruling Congress of attempting to divert water to taluks of Bengaluru South district (Formerly Ramanagara).
Tumakuru Rural MLA Suresh Gowda and Tumakuru City MLA Jyothi Ganesh demanded a feasibility study report from IISc on the link canal project. They would support the project if it is based on scientific data, they argued. However, diversion of water of the district to other districts without scientific basis would be opposed, they said.

Bhilwara: Communal tensions flared Saturday in Jahazpur town of Bhilwara district after a minor car collision with a vegetable vendor's cart led to violence in which a young man was beaten to death the previous night. A key temple event was postponed Saturday and permissions for weekend Muharram processions revoked after threats from Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal not to allow any such events in this area of the BJP-governed state. Police deployments were stepped up and markets in Jahazpur town were shut Saturday. The trouble began when Sitaram Keer (25) was headed to Jahazpur with three others in a car. Their vehicle lost control and struck a cart belonging to Sharif Mohammad, a local vegetable vendor. Tonk resident Keer was dragged out of the car and lynched by a mob of vegetable vendors and other locals, said police. VHP, Bajrang Dal and other Hindu organisations staged protests outside Jahazpur police station demanding immediate arrests. Police registered a murder case against 15 people and detained three youths for questioning. The protesters refused to allow post-mortem until their demands, including compensation and a job for Keer's family, were met. Jahazpur BJP MLA Gopichand Meena echoed the protesters, saying Muharram processions would not be allowed to proceed until the accused were arrested and compensation was provided to the victim's family. On Saturday, an agreement was reached between the protesters and the authorities for compensation of Rs 22 lakh, a contractual job for a member of Keer's family and an undertaking from the police to promptly arrest the accused. The post-mortem was done Saturday and Keer's body handed over to his family, officials said. "We are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning several individuals. Three youths have been detained," Bhilwara SP Dharmendra Singh Yadav said, appealing for peace in the region. In spite of the agreement, the atmosphere remained surcharged. A ceremony at Jahazpur Fort honouring local deity Lord Peetambar Rai Maharaj, scheduled after a 10-month interval, was indefinitely postponed. VHP demanded suspension of Muharram processions across Bhilwara district. "The brutal killing of the Hindu youth has caused immense anger in the community," said local VHP functionary Vijay Ojha. Local authorities said they continued to monitor the situation closely to prevent any further escalation of tensions in the area.

The discussions focused on overhauling the procurement system to ensure farmers receive fair compensation for their produce. "The primary objective is to prevent farmers from distress-selling. In the last procurement cycle, delays and poor storage conditions caused significant spoilage, with thousands of tonnes of onions rotting in godowns. Farmer groups have warned of a repeat if corrective steps are not implemented immediately.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has announced that his party leaders will visit villages where primary schools are listed for merger by the Uttar Pradesh government and hoist the national flag on Independence Day. The move, he said, is to protest against the BJP's alleged attempt to deprive the poor of education. He further claimed that many of the schools marked for merger were situated at polling booths where the BJP had lost in previous elections. 'On August 15, we will not only hoist the flag but also alert villagers about this deliberate strategy,' he added. Responding to a query on language politics, Akhilesh said his party supports all Indian languages and stands against any form of discrimination. 'From Hindi to Marathi, Tamil to Kannada and Urdu, we respect all languages. People are trying to gain politically by fuelling linguistic disputes. BJP wants to keep this issue alive for its own benefit,' he said. Akhilesh also alleged manipulation of voter lists by the BJP in every election. 'Every time, the BJP invents a new method to tamper with the electoral roll. Our party workers must remain vigilant and ensure the lists are corrected in time,' he said. On the UP government's decision to hand over the Jayaprakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC) to the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA), Akhilesh accused the BJP of planning to sell the asset under a 'well-thought-out strategy.' He said the JPNIC was developed under the Samajwadi government as a world-class facility in honour of Jayaprakash Narayan, a prominent figure in the socialist movement. 'As soon as the BJP came to power, it made baseless allegations and dismantled the society governing the centre,' he said. At the event, Akhilesh also honoured Mihi Lal Gautam, a labourer from Lakhimpur who survived a leopard attack on June 24. The incident took place at a brick kiln in Baburi village, where Gautam fought the animal with his bare hands. Akhilesh presented him with a cheque of ₹2 lakh for his courage.
