Ex-CSK Wicketkeeper To Replace Rishabh Pant In Indian Team For 5th ENG Test: Report
Former Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batter Narayan Jagadeesan is reportedly set to replace Rishabh Pant in India's squad for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Pant suffered a foot injury on Wednesday (July 23), and due to that, he will miss the fifth Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England. The fifth Test is scheduled to take place at The Oval from July 31 to August 4.
According to a report in Cricbuzz on Thursday (July 24), 'The right-handed keeper batter from Tamil Nadu is almost certain to be added to the squad. An announcement is expected soon."
'The selectors and the team management were looking at Ishan Kishan as a potential option and it later emerged that the 27-year-old keeper from Jharkhand is not available," the report added.
Ishan, who last played a Test match for India in July 2023 against the West Indies in Port of Spain, according to a report in Times of India, is dealing with an ankle injury and has 10 stitches on his left foot after he fell from a scooty.
'Ishan has suffered an ankle injury and has ten stitches on his left foot after he fell from a scooty," a source tracking the development was quoted as saying by TOI on Thursday. 'Selectors did reach out to Ishan, but only on Thursday. His stitches have been removed, and he currently has a plaster on his left ankle," the source added.
Jagadeesan has played a total of 52 first-class matches so far and has scored 3373 runs. His batting average is 47.50 and he has 10 centuries and 14 half-centuries to his credit.
In the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, he scored 674 runs in eight matches for Tamil Nadu. His batting average was 56.16 and he crossed the 100-run mark twice in addition to scoring five fifties. Among wicketkeeper-batter's only Vidarbha's Akshay Wadkar (722 runs at 45.12 in 10 matches) scored more runs than him.
Jagadeesan's record in IPL
In the cash-rich Indian Premier League, Jagadeesan has played a total of 13 matches for two teams—Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. In seven matches for CSK across two seasons, he scored 73 runs, and in six matches for KKR in IPL 2023, he amassed a total of 89 runs.

Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy: Who Will Take Trophy Home If India Win Final Test And Series Ends In Draw? Check Here
IND vs ENG: India pulled off a dramatic escape on Sunday, July 27, as they denied England a series win in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester. The hosts were firm favourites to seal the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, needing just eight Indian wickets with nearly two days to play. However, India's resilience with the bat ensured the match ended in a draw, keeping the series alive at 2-1 in England's favour. Rahul and Gill Lay the Foundation Facing a daunting task, India's survival effort began with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, who displayed remarkable patience and discipline to bat through the entirety of Day 4. Their stand wore down the English bowling attack and prevented early breakthroughs that could have led to a collapse. Jadeja and Sundar's Match-Saving Partnership On the final day, India were still under pressure, but Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar rose to the occasion. The pair put together an unbroken 203-run partnership that not only frustrated England but also shifted the momentum entirely. Sundar brought up his maiden Test century, while Jadeja remained unbeaten on 107, showcasing grit and maturity. Eventually, with the result inevitable, both teams agreed to shake hands and end the match as a draw—much to India's relief and England's disappointment. Series Heads to The Oval with Everything to Play For With the fourth Test drawn, the five-match series now stands at 2-1 in England's favour. The final Test will be played at The Oval starting Thursday, and India will need to win to level the series. A 2-2 result would be a moral victory for the visitors after being 2-1 down, but the big question remains who would retain the trophy? Who Will Hold the Trophy If Series Is Drawn? According to tradition in most bilateral Test series, if a series ends in a draw, the team that won the previous edition retains the trophy. In this case, while the 2021 Pataudi Trophy ended in a draw, England had beaten India 4-1 in 2018, technically making them the holders. However, the current series marks the inaugural edition of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, replacing the Pataudi Trophy. This raises uncertainty over whether the 2018 result still applies or if a drawn series would mean the trophy is shared. As of now, neither the BCCI nor the ECB has issued an official clarification on the retention rules for the new trophy in the event of a drawn series.

'Make that call': R Ashwin urges Shubman Gill to take bold selection call for Oval decider
NEW DLEHI: has urged Indian skipper to rethink his bowling choices ahead of the series-deciding fifth Test against England at The Oval, stating firmly that 'Test matches are not won by batting depth; they are drawn by it. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now ' Following India's spirited draw at Old Trafford, Ashwin lauded Gill's gritty hundred but warned that tactical missteps could cost India the series. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube show Ash ki Baat, highlighted Gill's resilience and maturity with the bat, especially under pressure. 'What a fabulous hundred by Shubman Gill. He has once again proved himself. He did not have a great match as captain — the way he brought late was a huge tactical mistake. But that happens. He is a young captain and will only learn by making mistakes, and I hope he learns faster.' Poll Do you think Shubman Gill should change his bowling strategy for the final Test? Yes, he needs to be bold. No, his current strategy is fine. After slumping to 0/2 in the second innings, India fought back thanks to a 188-run stand between KL Rahul and Gill. While Rahul fell for 90, Gill's composed 103 helped India stay alive in the series. Ashwin called it a 'leader's emergence knock.' India stay alive, England frustrated after draw; handshake drama at Old Trafford and more 'Gill kept all things aside and came out as a batter and played a leader's knock. He scored at Birmingham, Headingley, and now here. We lost at Lord's and a lot of people raised questions about his batting. When everything was down, he walked out to the middle in complete control and batted beautifully,' Ashwin added. Ashwin, however, stressed that India's tactical execution had been 'pretty ordinary' in the series and said it's time for bold decisions. 'Improve now, and please make that call,' he said. 'You can still lose after that decision, but make it. Pick bowlers who have the knack for taking wickets. That's how you win Tests.' Gautam Gambhir fiery press conference: Slams critics, big update on Jasprit Bumrah, Karun vs Sai Gill has amassed 722 runs in the series so far at an average of 90.25, including four centuries. With the series at 2-1 in England's favour, the final Test begins on July 31 at The Oval.

Shubman Gill Equals Gary Sobers Test Record, Needs 1 Run To...
Last Updated: Shubman Gill has proven his credentials in Test cricket with a memorable show on India's ongoing tour of England. India captain Shubman Gill is in the midst of a breakthrough series of his Test career that has seen him score truckload of runs. In his debut series as India Test captain, Gill has stepped up his game with four centuries from eight innings including a magnificent double ton against England. With a Test still remaining in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Gill can create several records. The 25-year-old on Sunday, scored a memorable hundred which was pivotal to India securing a hard-fought draw in Manchester after playing catchup for the majority of the match. He scored 103 off 238 and stitched a 188-run partnership with KL Rahul (90) to help the visitors recover from 0/2 after England had taken a huge 311-run lead. Gill thus drew level with the legendary Gary Sobers' 59-year-old record for the most runs scored by a visiting captain during a series in SENA countries. Sobers scored 722 from eight innings of five Tests during West Indies' 1966 tour of England. The legendary allrounder scored three centuries and two fifties on the tour. Gill has so far made 722 runs from eight innings of four Tests and needs 1 run to go past Sobers record. Most runs by a visiting captain in a series in SENA countries Overall, the record for the most runs in a single series by a captain is held by legendary Don Bradman of Australia who racked up 810 runs in 9 innings of a five-Test series against England at home in 1936-37. Gill is joint-third in this list. Gill's Sensational Show Prior to the start of England tour, there questions were raised over Gill's middling record in Test cricket. All five of his Test centuries before leaving for England came at home. The youngster has addressed the criticism with aplomb peeling four centuries with his overall Test average now in the early fourties. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
