India-EU free trade agreement
Bern [Switzerland], June 10 (ANI): Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal expressed optimism about the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and said the deal may be concluded soon.
Addressing a press conference over India-EU FTA negotiations soon after the event of Swissmem Industry Day in Switzerland, Union Minister Goyal said, 'There's a saying which goes so near and yet so far. So I would believe that in the case of the European Union, we are really very near.'
Goyal further added that there are only a few issues remaining between the two sides.
'There are just a few issues remaining to be sorted out,' he said, adding that 'we have both agreed to respect each other's sensitivities so that we don't let the irritants, which have in the past held back agreements between two friendly sets of nations or democratic countries.'
Goyal highlighted India's successful trade agreements with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates as examples of a mutually beneficial, fair and balanced approach.
'In the same spirit in which we finalised EFTA, in the same spirit in which we finalised NFT with the UK or Australia or the United Arab Emirates, in that spirit of mutually beneficial, fair and balanced agreement, which will support the economies of the 27 Nation, EU block and India, keeping in mind the different levels of development that are currently on the table, but respecting that the greatest growth opportunity in the years to come lies in India,' said Goyal.
Goyal further added that the agreement between the two sides would take into account the different development stages of India and the EU and unlock immense growth opportunities.
'The greatest growth opportunity in the years to come lies in India. As we grow from a USD 4 trillion to a USD 30-35 trillion economy, this partnership will be transformative,' he said.
'I think we are very close to finalising a very good, robust free trade agreement with the EU faster than most people would imagine,' he added.
India and the EU bloc in May reaffirmed their intention to conclude free trade agreement negotiations by the end of 2025.
During the talks, India has emphasised that meaningful progress in trade negotiations requires equal focus on non-tariff barriers (NTBs) alongside tariff discussions and regulatory frameworks must be inclusive, proportionate, and avoid restricting trade. (ANI)

Bangladesh's Yunus claims he had appealed to PM Modi over Sheikh Hasina's online speeches, citing ‘unrest'
Bangladesh Chief Adviser and head of the country's interim government Muhammad Yunus, while expressing frustration over comments made by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's statements from India, claimed that he had reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to intervene and stop her from addressing Bangladeshis. Yunus claimed that her online speeches were provocative and risked inciting unrest in the country. While speaking to Chatham House think tank director Bronwen Maddox in London on Wednesday (June 11), Yunus said: 'All the anger (against Hasina) has now transferred to India because she went there. When I had a chance to talk to Prime Minister Modi, I simply said: you want to host her, I cannot force you to abandon that policy. But please help us in making sure she doesn't speak to Bangladeshi people the way she is doing (online).' Hasina, who was forced to flee Bangladesh in August 2024 following student-led protests against a government job quota system that escalated to violent clashes and unrest, was given refuge by India. 'She announces on such and such day at such and such hour, she will speak, and the whole of Bangladesh gets very angry, the way she is speaking. Why is she keeping this whole anger thing inside of us now? And is India doing what you asked? No. Mr Modi's answer, I quote, he said, 'It's the social media, we cannot control it',' the Bangladesh interim leader claimed. 'What can you say? It's an explosive situation. The diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Dhaka hit a new low following Hasina's ouster in August 2024, who took refuge in India. This also comes after the prosecutors with Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal charged Hasina with crimes against humanity, alleging her role in ordering mass killings during a nationwide uprising in July. The charges, submitted by Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and his team, accuse Hasina of being the chief instigator behind the violent crackdown that unfolded during the July and August unrest, according to The Dhaka Tribune. Parents raise concerns at Telangana Education Commission meet
HYDERABAD: Parents and other stakeholders raised numerous queries and concerns, particularly regarding steep fee hikes in private junior colleges, at the public hearing on Intermediate education, held by the Telangana Education Commission (TEC), on Wednesday. Participants flagged key issues such as the introduction of English medium instruction, lecturer absenteeism, poor infrastructure and unfilled teaching posts in government junior colleges (GJCs). Several parents shared their grievances over the annual fee hikes, which they claimed, rise by 30% to 40% every year. 'This is happening due to the absence of a proper fee regulation body,' said Suresh, a parent. They urged TEC to implement a regulatory framework without further delay. TEC members reviewed the challenges faced by GJCs and the growing commercialisation of intermediate education by private colleges. They stressed the need for stricter oversight and stronger government institutions. Suggestions included introducing English medium classes, engineering coaching, infrastructure upgrades, and immediate recruitment of lecturers. Meanwhile, private junior college representatives appealed to the commission to expedite pending fee reimbursement dues. TRSMA submits memo to Union education minister Hyderabad: The Telangana Recognised School Management Association (TRSMA) submitted a memorandum to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday and urged him to introduce annual in-service teacher training programmes through National Institute of Open Schooling. In the letter, the Union minister was apprised of key concerns and proposals for the development and financial empowerment of budget private schools, including provision of low-interest loans to help upgrade school infrastructure.
