India-EU free trade agreement
Addressing a press conference over India-EU FTA negotiations soon after the event of Swissmem Industry Day in Switzerland, Union Minister Goyal said, 'There's a saying which goes so near and yet so far. So I would believe that in the case of the European Union, we are really very near.'
Goyal further added that there are only a few issues remaining between the two sides.
'There are just a few issues remaining to be sorted out,' he said, adding that 'we have both agreed to respect each other's sensitivities so that we don't let the irritants, which have in the past held back agreements between two friendly sets of nations or democratic countries.'
Goyal highlighted India's successful trade agreements with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates as examples of a mutually beneficial, fair and balanced approach.
'In the same spirit in which we finalised EFTA, in the same spirit in which we finalised NFT with the UK or Australia or the United Arab Emirates, in that spirit of mutually beneficial, fair and balanced agreement, which will support the economies of the 27 Nation, EU block and India, keeping in mind the different levels of development that are currently on the table, but respecting that the greatest growth opportunity in the years to come lies in India,' said Goyal.
Goyal further added that the agreement between the two sides would take into account the different development stages of India and the EU and unlock immense growth opportunities.
'The greatest growth opportunity in the years to come lies in India. As we grow from a USD 4 trillion to a USD 30-35 trillion economy, this partnership will be transformative,' he said.
'I think we are very close to finalising a very good, robust free trade agreement with the EU faster than most people would imagine,' he added.
India and the EU bloc in May reaffirmed their intention to conclude free trade agreement negotiations by the end of 2025.
During the talks, India has emphasised that meaningful progress in trade negotiations requires equal focus on non-tariff barriers (NTBs) alongside tariff discussions and regulatory frameworks must be inclusive, proportionate, and avoid restricting trade. (ANI)

Centre trying to destroy welfare board: State construction workers
Mysuru: Karnataka State Construction Workers' and Welfare Board chairman Balakrishna Shetty on Sunday accused the Union govt of attempting to destroy the state construction welfare board. He was speaking at the second district-level conference of the State Construction Worker Welfare Federation held in the city. He said that the state govt constituted the construction welfare board as per the Construction Workers Welfare Act 1996. The state govt has been providing 19 different types of benefits to construction workers after constituting this board, including scholarships for children, healthcare, bus passes, and several other facilities. Treated like strangers: Sunjay Kapur's sister alleges family sidelined, disrespected
Mandhira Kapur Smith, sister of the late Sona Comstar Chairperson Sunjay Kapur, has voiced concern over how her family is being treated by the automotive company founded by their late father, especially her 80-year-old mother Rani Kapur. In an interview with news agency ANI, Mandhira claimed the family has been treated like strangers.'Within days, everything has been taken away from the family,' she said. She also said the names of family members were not included in obituaries and public also said her mother had been instrumental in supporting her father Surinder Kapur as he grew the business from its origins in the jewellery trade into a prominent player in the automotive sector. Despite her early involvement, Rani Kapur has now been excluded from the company, Mandhira claimed. 'There should have been some respect given to my mother who is one of the founders with my father. Sona Comstar was built because of my father,' she said. She added that her mother should have been given a non-executive board dispute between the Kapur family and Sona Comstar escalated, the company issued a cease-and-desist notice to Rani Kapur, mother of Sunjay and Mandhira her letter to the board, Rani Kapur claimed that she is the sole beneficiary of Surinder Kapur's estate and the majority shareholder of the Sona Group, including Sona Kapur also alleged that she was pressured into signing documents backing the appointment of her daughter-in-law, Priya Sachdev Kapur, as a non-executive director on the company's Comstar responded by saying that Rani Kapur has not had any role in the company since 2019, either directly or Kapur's sister also criticised the company for asking her mother to apologise publicly for requesting a delay to a board meeting after Sunjay Kapur's death.'She has been thrown to the curb. They have not cared about her or her feelings or that she stood by my father while he built the company,' Mandhira added that for her mother, Sona is like another child and asking for a delay in the board meeting was a reasonable request. 'She's not a stranger,' Mandhira added that the issue is not just about money or business. 'People who have not built it will only see money, people who have built it, which is us, see much more than that. We see (this as) a legacy, we see dad's dreams,' she also spoke about her mother's ongoing questions regarding Sunjay Kapur's sudden death. 'He was fit. Who is giving her answers? My mum's asking me every day, how did this happen?' she Kapur who headed the Rs 30,000 crore mobility tech company died on June 12 while playing polo in London.
