Panthers great Cam Newton goes scorched earth on celeb detractors amid Jalen Hurts debate
The franchise's all-time leading passer and former NFL Most Valuable Player had received a bit of criticism after not including Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts on his recent list of the game's top 10 quarterbacks. Newton, however, believed that some of the backlash was too pointed and too personal.
So, he took out a little time this week to respond to the detractors—including ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, Ryan Clark and Dan Orlovsky, Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens and rapper/Eagles superfan Gillie Da Kid.

To Newton's point, he did not disparage Hurts for his talents and abilities under center. In fact, he praised the reigning Super Bowl MVP.
Here's what Newton said of Hurts during that July 17 episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton:
"Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback. Do not get that twisted," he stated. "But if we're talking about what they bring to the table, it's hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you're throwing to a guy like A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith. When you have a tight end skill set, you have a dominant defense, you have the best running back [Saquon Barkley] in the game."

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys signed tight end Jake Ferguson to a four-year, $52 million extension Sunday. The deal includes a $12 million signing bonus. A fourth-round pick in 2022, Ferguson is entering the final year of his rookie deal. He had 59 catches for 494 yards but did not have a touchdown reception last season.
