Jean-Claude Van Damme denies ‘grotesque' claim he knowingly had sex with five trafficked women
The action film star, whose credits include Street Fighter and Bloodsport, has spoken out after reportedly finding himself the subject of criminal charges in Romania over the claims.
Last week, it was alleged that Van Damme received five Romanian women as a 'gift' from a group of traffickers while in Cannes, France – but the actor's agent has hit back at the 'unfounded' claims.
'We have become aware of articles alleging an alleged affair in Cannes involving Mr Jean-Claude Van Damme,' Patrick Goavec said in a statement.
He told People: 'The reported facts are both grotesque and non-existent. Mr Van Damme does not wish to comment or fuel this rumour, which is as absurd as it is unfounded.'
The news originally surfaced after a report by the local CNN affiliate Antena 3, who alleged that a criminal complaint had been filed with the Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT).
According to the outlet, DIICOT launched their investigation after a woman allegedly witnessed the incident at an event organised by Van Damme and shared what she claimed she had seen with prosecutors.
Antena 3 quotesattorney Adrian Cuculis, who is representing one of the alleged victims, as saying that 'several Romanians who are currently being investigated for forming a criminal group and pimping, allegedly offered Jean-Claude Van Damme five Romanian women – photo models in Romania – for him to have sexual relations with'.
Cuculis added that 'the person who received those benefits knew their condition,' and that the women 'were in a state of vulnerability, with the suspicion that they were exploited within the meaning of Article 182 of the Criminal Code'.
Antena 3 was also told the alleged incident is part of a larger investigation by the Romanian Prosecutor's Office into human trafficking, and the trafficking of minors, that has been carried out since 2020.
Former bodybuilder Van Damme made his big break into action films in the 1980s, and led cult martial arts film Bloodsport in 1988. His other credits include Kickboxer, Double Impact, Universal Soldier, Timecop Street Fighter, and Sudden Death.
More recently, he has played a villainous role in The Expendables 2 and provided voice work for the 2022 family film Minions: The Rise of Gru.
In 2021, a director for the sitcom Friends said Van Damme was 'unprepared and arrogant' during his guest appearance on the show.
He starred as himself in the second season episode 'The One After the Super Bowl,' in which he was romantically pursued by both Monica (Courteney Cox) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston).
While he hasn't responded to director Michael Lembeck's comments, Van Damme told the New York Post in 2023 that he was 'ashamed' of his acting in the episode.
'My acting is so bad.... I'm ashamed of myself,' said Van Damme. 'So then I was on the set, and those girls, they go and they kiss me and they kiss me on the lips. I didn't know what to do, how to do … It was strange. They were very nice.'
He added he knew little about the hit sitcom, saying: 'I didn't know much about the show. So when I go to the show, I see those two beautiful girls and they say this is the hottest show right now in the world. So I was very glad.'
Van Damme has been married five times – twice to female bodybuilder Gladys Portugues in 1987 and, after divorcing in 1992, again in 1999. They are still together now. The actor has three children.

Nip/Tuck star Dylan Walsh involved in car crash which sees two rushed to hospital
Former Nip/Tuck star Dylan Walsh has been confirmed safe following a terrifying car crash over the weekend involving his entire family. The 61-year-old Hollywood actor was caught up in a serious motor accident in Rumson, New Jersey, on August 17 whilst travelling with his loved ones. According to reports by People, a 2022 Ford Explorer carrying five passengers swerved into the southbound lane whilst heading northbound on East River Road at around 5pm. The vehicle then smashed through a utility pole before crashing into a second pole. Following the dramatic collision, two passengers were taken to Riverview Medical Centre for treatment after reporting pain, reports the Mirror US. It remains unclear whether Dylan, who shot to fame in the medical drama series Nip/Tuck, was behind the wheel at the time. In a statement to People, Dylan's representatives confirmed: "Over the weekend, Dylan Walsh and his family were involved in a car accident in Rumson. Thankfully, everyone is safe and has since returned home." Eight local residents in New Jersey were left without power following the crash, but it was later restored. Jersey Central Power and Light has also replaced the utility poles that were destroyed in the accident. The actor's wife, Leslie Bourque-Walsh, opened up about the terrifying ordeal in a now-deleted Facebook post. She wrote: "It was our family who was involved in the car accident on River Road yesterday afternoon. We just want to thank everyone who took care of us in this scary time." Leslie continued: "1st of all to the managers/staff at River Point Inn who immediately ran out to make sure we were ok and comfort our kids (literally one lady wrapped her arms around all of us letting us know it would be ok) - bringing ice bags and the fancy Evian water bottles." She then expressed her gratitude to the first responders who arrived at the scene of the accident and thanked the EMT who put up with her "corny" jokes during the ambulance ride. Leslie also provided an update on their condition, writing: "We are a bit bruised from seatbelts, but grateful for them and air bags which saved our lives. We apologise for anyone who lost power or inconvenience."

Oregon city that tried to ban homeless encampments agrees to ensure 150 camping spaces
The Oregon city at the heart of a major US supreme court homelessness ruling has agreed to ensure camping spaces for at least 150 people as part of a settlement reached with a disability rights group that sued the city over its camping rules. Disability Rights Oregon, which sued Grants Pass in January, said on Friday that it had reached a settlement agreement. The advocacy group accused the city of discriminating against people with disabilities and violating a state law requiring cities' camping regulations to be 'objectively reasonable'. Grants Pass has received national attention for its efforts to ticket and prosecute unhoused people sleeping outside. The city's legal battle resulted in a supreme court ruling dictating that local governments across the US can criminalize camping even when there is no shelter available for the homeless population. 'This settlement represents a significant step forward in ensuring people with disabilities experiencing homelessness have places to rest, basic necessities like drinking water, and real opportunity to stabilize their lives,' Jake Cornett, executive director and CEO of Disability Rights Oregon, said in a statement. Grants Pass mayor, Clint Scherf, said in an email on Tuesday that the city appreciates having reached an agreement and will 'continue to work toward effective measures to benefit all members of our community'. A copy of the settlement agreement showed the city signed off on it earlier this month. Josephine county circuit court judge Sarah McGlaughlin issued a preliminary injunction in March blocking the city from enforcing its camping rules unless it increased capacity at city-approved sites for camping and ensured they are physically accessible to people with disabilities. City ordinances prohibit sleeping or leaving personal property in a park overnight in most cases. Those found in violation can be fined up to $50. The city said Friday on Facebook that law enforcement 'will begin noticing the parks, and occupants will have 72 hours to remove their belongings'. The city's website shows three 'designated resting locations' in the downtown area, near City Hall and the police station, where people can stay for four days before having to relocate. The time limit can be enforced unless disability accommodations are necessary, the city said on Facebook. At resting sites, individuals are limited to spaces that are 8ft by 8ft (2.4 metres by 2.4 metres), with buffers of 3ft (0.9 metres) between spaces, as outlined in city code. Under the settlement, Grants Pass must ensure that at least 150 camping spaces are available in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act for the next 12 months. Drinking water and hand washing stations must be available on-site. The city must also provide $60,000 in grant funding to a non-profit for homeless services. Last June, in a case brought by the city, the US supreme court ruled communities can ban sleeping outside and fine people for doing so, even when there are not enough shelter beds. Upon taking office in January, the new mayor and new council members moved to close the larger of the two sites, which housed roughly 120 tents, according to Disability Rights Oregon's complaint, which said the sites were frequently crowded with poor conditions and inaccessible to people with disabilities because of loose gravel. After the lawsuit was filed, the city reopened a second, smaller site. McGlaughin's order in March said the city had to increase capacity to what it had been before the larger site was closed. Elsewhere, the California city of San Jose is similarly planning to open sanctioned camping sites in addition to the 'safe parking' it offers for people who live in vehicles such as RVs. The city of San Rafael, also in the San Francisco Bay Area, also has a sanctioned camping program. Homelessness increased 18% last year nationwide, driven mostly by a lack of affordable housing as well as devastating natural disasters and an increase in migrants in some areas.
