Video: Man boats through flooded Delhi road, AAP mocks BJP's 4-engine government

India Todaya day ago
AAP Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj on Thursday mocked the BJP-led government in the national capital, showing a man boating in the streets of the posh locality of Greater Kailash, and saying, "Looks like boats have started running in Greater Kailash (GK) too — a four-engine government." The rains in the national capital, which have laid bare the city's infrastructure, have become the focal point of the AAP's attack against the Delhi government. Earlier in the day, the main opposition party took another jab, claiming that the 'double-engine' government is failing, citing more than two dozen rain-related deaths in the city. advertisement"In Delhi's rains, all the BJP government's engines have failed. More than two dozen people have already died in Delhi. But the BJP government, busy making reels, is running away from its responsibilities," AAP said earlier in the day.
On Saturday, heavy rains resulted in the deaths of eight people and severe flooding in key areas, including a disruption of water supply following the flooding of the Giri Nagar pumping station. The deluge has turned parts of the city impassable, leading to a political spat between AAP and BJP.Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Atishi, criticised the BJP-led government, accusing it of mismanagement. "Mismanagement by the four-engine BJP govt has not only submerged Delhi roads, but caused a water crisis in Kalkaji," she stated. The timing of this crisis coincided with Raksha Bandhan, where Atishi lamented the situation, "On Raksha Bandhan, the entire city is submerged. People cannot step out of their homes. The collapse of governance under (Chief Minister) Rekha Gupta's government is preventing brothers from meeting their sisters."Bharadwaj further alleged a lack of transparency in desilting operations in Delhi, citing a missing audit report as evidence. "This shows the government is trying to hide information," Bharadwaj commented. He also mocked BJP MP Parvesh Verma's delayed visit to flood-affected areas, saying, "It seems Parvesh doesn't have a watch. Someone please give him one."In contrast, BJP's Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh released videos comparing AAP's 11-year tenure's waterlogged areas to current footage showing improvements, aiming to demonstrate progress under BJP leadership.- EndsMust Watch

Panel set up to curb infiltration, says PM

New Delhi: India's demography is being changed as a part of a well thought-out conspiracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged on Friday as he announced a high-powered demographic mission to tackle the 'massive crisis lurking over India'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi salutes during address to the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort on 79th Independence Day. (ANI) 'Today, I want to tell you about a challenge. The country's demography is being changed as a part of a well thought-out conspiracy. A new crisis is being created. And these intruders are snatching away employment opportunities for our youth... They are targeting our sisters and daughters. This will not be tolerated. These intruders are usurping the land of innocent tribals. This country will not tolerate such acts,' Modi said in his customary address to the nation on Independence Day. He added: 'When there is a demographic change, especially in the border states, it creates a crisis for national security. It creates a crisis for the country's unity, integrity and development and creates social tension. No country can give away its land to illegal immigrants. No country in the world can afford to do this. How can India allow this to happen?' Referring to the struggle for India's independence, Modi said: 'Our forefathers have sacrificed themselves to give us freedom and an independent India. It is our duty towards them that we do not tolerate such activities in our country. That will be the real tribute to them.' 'I want to say from the Red Fort, we have decided to start a high-powered demographic mission. With this mission we will tackle the massive crisis lurking over India,' he said, adding that the mission will work within a stipulated time and with a well thought-out strategy. The PM's comments come amid a major political tussle over the identification and deportation of undocumented Bangladeshis in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled states. The Opposition has attacked Modi over the 'harassment' of Bengali-speaking Muslims in the garb of this exercise. Undocumented immigration is a major issue in Assam and West Bengal, the two border states going to the polls next year. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched what he calls a drive to evict and send back Bangladeshis. In June, Sarma said 330 illegal Bangladeshis were sent back. In July, a political slugfest broke out between West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her Assam counterpart Sarma on social media on July 19 with the two leaders accusing each other of engaging in divisive and appeasement politics Banerjee alleged that the BJP was persecuting Bengali speakers in Assam. 'This divisive agenda of the BJP in Assam has crossed all limits and people of Assam will fight back. I stand with every fearless citizen who is fighting for the dignity of their language and identity, and their democratic rights,' she posted on X on July 19. Soon after, Sarma hit back stating: 'Didi (Mamata Banerjee), let me remind you—In Assam, we are not fighting our own people. We are fearlessly resisting the ongoing, unchecked Muslim infiltration from across the border, which has already caused an alarming demographic shift. In several districts, Hindus are now on the verge of becoming a minority in their own land,' he wrote on X.

Texas Blames ESG Efforts in Probe of Xcel Over 2024 Wildfires

(Bloomberg) -- The Texas attorney general is investigating utility Xcel Energy Inc. and its contractor for two wildfires that devastated the state last year, saying the companies may have prioritized environmental and diversity goals over maintenance and safety. 'It is unconscionable that utility companies might have sacrificed infrastructure maintenance, public safety and the well-being of our Texas communities for radical ESG and DEI goals,' Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement Friday. Xcel shares fell as much as 4.5% after the investigation was announced before rebounding, and were down 1.8% to $71.06 at 11:56 a.m. in New York. Xcel has acknowledged that its infrastructure was likely involved in starting the the Smokehouse Creek fire, which charred more than 1 million acres in the Texas Panhandle, destroying ranches and killing thousands of livestock animals and two people. However, the company has disputed that its power lines sparked the nearby Windy Deuce blaze, the other incident Texas cited in its investigation. Climate change has ripened conditions for more frequent and devastating wildfires. Across the US, utilities have been facing mounting pressure to better protect their equipment. And while power companies have been found to cause blazes in recent years, there's no evidence that's come because of prioritizing other initiatives. The attorney general's offices issued civil investigative demand letters to Xcel, its utility Southwestern Public Service Co. and its contractor Osmose Utilities Services. An Xcel representative didn't immediately provide a statement, while an Osmose representative didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Republican-led states have targeted companies and financial institutions for adopting environmental, social and governance policies, or ESG, that limit business with the firearms or fossil fuels industries. They've also criticized diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, or DEI. Texas restricts government work with companies that discriminate against firearms entities or boycott oil and gas companies. The ESG push at investment firms, pension funds and law practices has faded somewhat, partly because of efforts to avoid attacks by President Donald Trump and Republicans. Xcel has set a goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, which is common among utility companies. The company faces lawsuits from victims of the Smokehouse fire, and is set to go to trial next month over its role in the 2021 Marshall Fire in Colorado, which it denies sparking. --With assistance from Amanda Albright. Thackeray Cousins To Contest Mumbai, Other Civic Polls Together: Sanjay Raut

Mumbai: The civic polls in Mumbai and other key cities will see cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, earlier not on amicable terms, form an alliance, said Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut. "The Thackeray brothers (Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray) will contest the municipal corporation elections in Mumbai, Thane, Nashik and Kalyan-Dombivali together and win. The strength of Raj and Uddhav Thackeray is the strength of the unity of the Marathi-speakers. No power cannot break the iron fist of `Marathi manus' now," Raut told reporters. Civic polls are due in Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali, Navi Mumbai, Ulhasnagar, Bhiwandi-Nizamapur, Vasai-Virar, Mira-Bhayandar and Panvel, apart from other cities like Nashik. Mr Raut said Uddhav and Raj Thackeray have the support of the Marathi-speaking population, adding that discussions are on between Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leaders on the way forward. Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan said anyone can separate or unite in a democracy. "They should win the elections in Mumbai, Pune and Nashik first, and then talk any further," he said. Bharat Gogavale, a leader of the Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, said the ruling Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Shinde Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP, will win all civic polls. Two decades after Raj Thackeray quit the Shiv Sena, talks of a Raj-Uddhav reunion began in April as discussions on the Marathi identity and Hindi "imposition" in Maharashtra gained momentum. The fight for language also likely poses a political opportunity for the fledgling Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, smarting from the 15 per cent vote share it garnered in the Assembly elections last year, as the Mahayuti marched to a comfortable victory. The MNS ended with a blank slate. The civic polls, especially in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which the Uddhav Sena considers its citadel, are thus a matter of prestige for the Shiv Sena (UBT). The state government's flip-flop on the three-language policy and the introduction of Hindi as a third language proved a galvanising force for the parties led by the cousins. In the run-up to these municipal elections, the brothers have already shared the stage at a victory rally in Mumbai earlier this month to celebrate the rollback of the Hindi language GRs (resolutions) by the BJP-led government. "We have come together to stay together. We will together capture power in the Mumbai civic body and Maharashtra," Uddhav Thackeray said, evoking loud cheers from the crowd in the packed NSCI Dome in Worli. Raj Thackeray said that, after the language row, the government's next move in politics will be to divide people on caste. "The BJP's ploy is to divide and rule," he charged. "Mumbai was our right, we fought and got it. We have to expose the BJP's 'one nation, one election' idea. Slowly, they want to make everything one. Hindu and Hindustan, we agree but we won't allow Hindi. We made Marathi compulsory, we had to do it," Uddhav Thackeray had added.
