Underrated plays from the Boston Celtics end to the 2024-25 NBA regular season
The 2024-25 regular season is coming to an end, and the 2025 NBA Playoffs are about to start for the Boston Celtics. The results from this season's play-in tournament are still to be determined to sort out what ball club has the luck of playing the Celtics in the first round of the true postseason, but we are inching closer to the games that count the most by the minute.
While we wait for that most important of seasons -- the 16-win season of the playoffs and the push for Banner 19 -- the hosts of the CLNS Media "First to the Floor" podcast, Jake Issenberg, Ben Vallis, and Wayne Spooney, took some time on a recent episode of their show to put together the best plays from Boston's dominant end to the regular season.

When the report came out about the Clippers being interested in Jrue Holiday, I wrote about why I didn't like that move. I would like this move a whole lot more for the Clippers. Advertisement While Holiday's talents mostly come on one end of the floor, White could help the Clippers on both ends. He is a strong defender, having earned All-Defensive honors in two of the last three seasons. He'd also give the Clippers another dependable option on offense. He averaged 16.4 points and 4.8 assists per game this past season. His three-point shooting would give the Clippers a boost in another area where they need it. He knocked down 3.5 threes per game this past season while shooting 38.4% from behind the arc. Meanwhile, the Clippers were near the bottom of the league in both three point attempts and made threes. Advertisement White wouldn't be a cheap option. He carries a $28.1 million cap hit into next season and it escalates each year after. He'd also require the Clippers to part with a decent amount of the little remaining draft capital they have available. Still, he'd be worth the price as a great fit to play alongside James Harden in the Clippers' backcourt. They won 64 games during the regular season under first-year head coach Kenny Atkinson, who won the 2024-25 Coach of the Year Award. It appeared Cleveland was primed to compete for the championship for the first time in the second post-LeBron James era. However, the Indiana Pacers humbled the Cavaliers in the conference semifinals, winning that series in five quick games. Indiana won Games 1, 2 and 5 in Cleveland, sending Cavaliers fans who went to those games home sad. The Cavaliers haven't advanced past the second round of the playoffs since acquiring Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz in 2022. Some around the NBA believe Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman has to make a big trade this offseason for Atkinson's group to take the next step. Garland has spent his entire career in Cleveland. He was the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Advertisement Garland, 25, will make $39.4 million next season. He struggled against the Pacers in the conference semifinals, averaging only 14.0 points while shooting just 34.2% from the field and 16.7% from beyond the arc. Garland appeared in 75 games for the Cavaliers this season. He averaged 20.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 6.7 assists while shooting 47.2% from the floor, 40.1% from 3 and 87.8% from the free-throw line. Garland is listed at 6-1, 192 pounds, while Mitchell is listed at 6-3, 215 pounds. That's a small backcourt in today's NBA, which is why some believe Garland should be traded for a bigger guard this summer. Examining if former Celtics 1st-round pick could have worked in Boston
Aaron Nesmith mostly watched from the Celtics bench back in the 2022 NBA Finals run. The C's took the next step toward competitiveness, but since the wing depth was so deep, Nesmith couldn't consistently crack the rotation. But as Nesmith stars for the Pacers during their 2025 playoffs, there's no denying the forward's impact on the game. Nesmith has developed into a legit rotation player for a Pacers team that's one win away from the NBA Finals. Advertisement He was crucial in their Game 1 win over the Knicks as he caught fire from deep. While Nesmith battled an ankle injury, he's played through it so far. Now, the Pacers are looking to close out the East Finals against the Knicks. Indiana holds a 3-1 series lead with Game 5 set for 8 p.m. Thursday in New York. Now, there are likely Celtics fans wondering if the team could have kept Nesmith considering what he's turned into for the Pacers. But there are a lot of moving parts, so probably not. Plus, in this current timeline, it ended with the Celtics winning the 2024 title so it all worked out for the front office. Nesmith was included in the Malcolm Brogdon deal with the Pacers back in the 2022 offseason. Brogdon ended up just being a one-year piece, though he did win Sixth Man of the Year in the 2022-23 season. More importantly, Brogdon was included in the Jrue Holiday deal with the Trail Blazers. Holiday is in trade rumors now, but there's no denying the guard was a big part of the 2024 title run that ended in a ring. Also, Nesmith was allowed to grow into his own when he got to Indiana. The Pacers went 35-47 in 2022-23. Nesmith played 73 games (60 starts) that year, getting consistent playing time for the first time in his career. The Celtics, on the flip side, didn't have minutes like that available fresh off the NBA Finals appearance as they had their eyes on Banner No. 18 at the time. The C's took Nesmith at 14th overall in the 2020 draft as he played his first two seasons in Boston. Advertisement So, it all worked out for both sides. The Pacers got Nesmith in the Brogdon deal while the Celtics eventually got the title (including beating Indiana in the 2024 East Finals). Nesmith, especially, proved that he's a bonafide NBA player as he's enjoyed a stellar playoff run. He's averaging 15.1 points and 6.0 rebounds in 14 playoff games, shooting an eye-popping 51.9% on his 3-pointers. The Pacers look like a team that will continue to be a problem in the East, though, with star guard Tyrese Haliburton leading the way. They've made the East Finals the past two years, plus they're on the edge of making their first NBA Finals appearance since 2000 and just their second-time ever.
