Three new Sabah GOF battalions formed

PAPAR: Three new battalions under the General Operations Force (GOF), namely Battalion 21 in Keningau and Battalion 22 in Kunak, Sabah, along with Battalion 23 in Sri Aman, Sarawak, were officially launched today by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said with the addition of these battalions, the GOF now comprises 23 battalions across the country - seven in Sabah, four in Sarawak and the remaining in Peninsular Malaysia.
Advertisement 'The GOF now has a total strength of 12,000 personnel, with each battalion comprising around 600 officers and personnel. This launch is a clear testament to the government and Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) continued commitment to fulfilling their core duty of safeguarding national peace, security and public order. 'It also reflects the preparedness of the force in facing any potential scenarios, challenges or threats. Sabah has experienced dark moments in the past (Tanduo incident), and such events necessitate a highly prepared security force, particularly the GOF,' he said. Saifuddin Nasution was speaking at a press conference after officiating the launch of the three new battalions at the Sabah GOF Brigade, which was also attended by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain and Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun. He also highlighted the government's dedication to supporting the GOF in terms of welfare, including the provision of conducive office facilities and living quarters to ensure the comfort of personnel.
Advertisement 'The government has allocated funds for the procurement and enhancement of new assets to support the force's capability. These assets are vital, as we possess expertise and capabilities that need to be reinforced with the right and suitable resources,' he said. In his speech, Saifuddin Nasution said that several projects had received government approval, including the development of new GOF posts along the Malaysia–Kalimantan border, with an allocation of RM32 million, covering seven locations in Sarawak and one in Sabah. In addition, administrative complexes and housing quarters for Battalion 20 in Beluran, Sabah (RM400 million) and Battalion 10 in Sarikei, Sarawak (RM200 million) are expected to be completed this year. Over 100,000 foreigners in Sabah registered in digital data system
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 113,282 foreigners employed in Sabah's plantation sector have registered in the centralised digital data system. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that the system facilitates real-time monitoring and management of foreign workers. He clarified that the digital data collection is unrelated to citizenship or permanent residency issues. The minister spoke after chairing key meetings on foreigner management and citizenship status in Sabah. The meetings were led by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor at Menara Kinabalu. Saifuddin Nasution announced plans to expand data collection to agriculture, manufacturing, and mining sectors. A moratorium on enforcement will allow foreign workers time to register under the digital system. He emphasised the need for accurate data to shape policies on foreign residents in Sabah. The state government will provide a specific period for the moratorium's implementation. The meetings also addressed efforts to relocate the Palauh or Bajau Laut community for land-based employment. Saifuddin Nasution refuted claims that the community is neglected, highlighting government initiatives. Additionally, 1,247 out of 2,000 citizenship applications were approved at the JKKSK meeting. These applications spanned from 2021 to last year and were assessed under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution. Article 15A allows for citizenship grants in special circumstances. Ukraine said small groups of Russian infantry had thrust some 10 kilometres (six miles) toward its main defensive line near the town of Dobropillia, raising fears of a wider breakthrough that would further threaten key cities. The advance, just days before Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin were due to meet in Alaska, appeared aimed at pressuring Kyiv to give up land in pursuit of peace three-and-a-half years into Russia's invasion of its neighbour. "The situation in the Dobropillia sector has stabilised," Vadym Filashkin, governor of the embattled Donetsk region, wrote the Telegram messaging app. "Thanks to the heroic efforts of our Defence Forces, the front line is reliably holding." Kyiv's military, which has played down the scale of the Russian thrust, had dispatched extra forces to the area including units of the battle-hardened Azov Corps. General Staff spokesperson Andriy Kovalyov, in comments to the Interfax Ukraine news agency, echoed Filashkin's statement and credited Azov forces with inflicting heavy enemy casualties. The Russian thrust had also fuelled criticism of Ukraine's military high command. DBKK approves three venues for Zara Qairina solidarity gatherings

The first venue is Padang Merdeka, which will host the event from 7pm to 11pm on Friday, Friday (Aug 15). On Saturday (Aug 16), Taman Chong Thien Vun will be available from 2pm to 4.30pm for the gathering. Another session on the same day will be held at Lintasan Deasoka from 5.30pm to 11pm. DBKK said the approval follows its set procedures and is subject to specific terms and conditions. It also clarified that the open space around the DBKK headquarters is not among the approved locations, despite social media claims. DBKK urged attendees to maintain cleanliness throughout the events. It reminded the public to use available facilities responsibly and with full respect for the surroundings. The gatherings are part of a series of events expressing solidarity in memory of Zara Qairina.
