Egypt, UK deepen economic, development ties ahead of Madbouly's visit to London

Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, held talks with UK Minister of State for International Development, Baroness Jenny Chapman, on the sidelines of the G20 Development Ministers' Meeting in South Africa. The meeting focused on advancing bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and global development reform ahead of the upcoming visit by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to the UK.
Both officials underscored the strategic significance of the visit, describing it as a pivotal step toward transforming Egyptian-British relations into a deeper partnership. The visit also aligns with Egypt's broader push to strengthen ties with the European Union.
Discussions centered on reforming global financial systems to make them more inclusive and accessible for developing countries. The ministers stressed the urgency of implementing international recommendations for greater transparency in financing and called for reforms to the UN's development frameworks to ensure stronger national ownership and coordination.
Al-Mashat highlighted Egypt's expanding collaboration with the UK in key areas such as food security, entrepreneurship, and SME development. She noted that the UK remains one of Egypt's top foreign investors, with significant engagement in energy, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods.
The meeting also reviewed the role of key British financial institutions—including the World Bank, UK Export Finance (UKEF), and British International Investment (BII)—in supporting Egypt's development priorities. BII, which considers Egypt a key market, is actively investing in areas like renewable energy and infrastructure. The ministers acknowledged the contribution of the British-Egyptian Business Association (BEBA) and the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce (EBCC) in fostering stronger commercial links.
Al-Mashat outlined the forthcoming launch of Egypt's 'National Narrative for Economic Development,' a strategic initiative aimed at accelerating structural reforms, boosting industrial output, and attracting foreign direct investment. She emphasized that economic measures introduced since March 2024 have stabilized the macroeconomic environment and improved investor confidence.
Climate cooperation was also a major theme, with discussions on Egypt's NWFE (Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy) platform and BII's role in financing green hydrogen and clean energy projects. The UK's support for global climate funds—including the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF)—was noted, along with the joint 'Green Growth: Egypt–UK' initiative, which continues through COP30.
Baroness Chapman reaffirmed the UK's commitment to its partnership with Egypt, praising Cairo's historical and humanitarian leadership—particularly its role in supporting Gaza. She also reiterated the UK's call for a sustainable ceasefire to ensure unimpeded humanitarian aid.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepening economic and development cooperation and advocating for global financial reforms that empower developing countries.

Grand imam inspects relief convoy dispatched by Zakat, Charity House to Gaza

CAIRO, Aug 4 (MENA) – Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayyeb on Monday checked on preparations for dispatching a relief convey by the Egyptian Zakat and Charity House, 'Bait El Zakat', to the Gaza Strip before its departure to the borders in the early hours of Tuesday. Tayyeb, in a statement issued on Monday, said that the convoy reflects solidarity of the Egyptian people with the Palestinians, who have been suffering from a dire humanitarian crisis for nearly two years due to ongoing Israeli aggression and restrictions imposed on the delivery of basic needs. He reaffirmed Al Azhar's unwavering commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and their just cause. The relief convoy includes over 1,000 fully equipped tents, thousands of tons of food supplies, clean drinking water, medical and daily living essentials, in addition to infant formula, medicines and healthcare supplies, according to the Zakat and Charity House. This convoy is part of the relief bridge launched by the Egyptian Zakat and Charity House under the auspices of the grand imam Tayyeb. The campaign has received support from charitable and humanitarian organizations across more than 85 countries. Established in 2014, the Egyptian Zakat and Charity House is one of Egypt's leading charitable organizations that enjoys financial and administrative independence to collect charity money from Muslims and disburse them in a legally prescribed manner, with a view to spreading the spirit of solidarity and compassion within society. Egypt supports empowering Palestinian Authority in Gaza: Ambassador

Egyptian Ambassador to Ramallah Ihab Suleiman affirmed Egypt's support for empowering the Palestinian Authority and its efforts to return to the Gaza Strip to ensure the unity of Palestinian territories and create a suitable environment for establishing a contiguous Palestinian state. This came in a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday regarding Suleiman's remarks during a meeting with Mohammad Mustafa, the prime minister of the State of Palestine, in Ramallah. Suleiman also stressed Egypt's firm rejection of any plans for the displacement of the Palestinians or the imposition of sovereignty over the occupied West Bank. He affirmed that this violates international law and threatens the prospects of establishing an independent Palestinian state. This comes as aid trucks lined up on approximately four kilometres along the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing heading to the Karm Abu Salem crossing on their way to enter Gaza. Egypt's Al-Qahera News carried live coverage on Monday, showing dozens of trucks organized by the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC). It indicated that the trucks are carrying sugar, flour, and baby milk formulas. Suleiman's statements echo earlier ones by Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty during an exclusive interview with Al Hadath news channel during his visit to the US. "Cairo has a clear and comprehensive plan for security arrangements and governance of the Gaza Strip after the end of the war," Abdelatty affirmed. He added that Egypt is training hundreds of Palestinians to take on security duties in Gaza. Moreover, Ambassador Suleiman reiterated Egypt's welcoming of the outcomes of the two-state solution conference held on 28-30 July in the US. He also praised the announcement by several countries of their intention to recognize the State of Palestine, including France, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The ambassador also reviewed Egypt's ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement, facilitate the exchange of captives and detainees, and ensure an unhindered flow of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. On Sunday, Egypt's military spokesman confirmed that nine Egyptian military transport planes airdropped tons of food in areas that are difficult to reach by land in the strip, in tandem with land convoys through the Rafah crossing. The airdrops came as Egypt's sixth and largest humanitarian aid convoy entered Gaza on Sunday morning, including two fuel trucks carrying 107 tons of diesel to help restore operations at the hospitals and bakeries of the besieged Palestinian territory. The meeting in Ramallah also stressed the importance of implementing the Arab-Islamic plan on Gaza, building on the outcomes of the two-state solution conference, and preparing for Cairo's hosting of the International Conference on Early Recovery and Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip once a ceasefire is reached. For his part, the Palestinian premier expressed gratitude to Egypt for its relentless efforts since the outbreak of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip. He also commended Egypt's relief efforts for Gaza despite Israeli obstacles hindering the delivery and distribution of aid. PM Mustafa further emphasized the importance of Egypt's role in the upcoming phase of the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
