
Nismo-nised new Nissan Patrol debuts as most powerful ever made
Confirmed to be sold in North America for the first time as the Armada Nismo, the Patrol Nismo will remain left-hand-drive only, thus ruling it out for South Africa.

A topic of speculation since the debut of the all-new Y63 Patrol last year, Nissan has officially unveiled the second generation Nismo version in the Middle East as the most powerful production Patrol ever made.
Muscled-up twin-turbo V6
One of the brand's key models in said market, where the previous generation accounted for a fair share of sales, the Nismo's main difference, once again, resides up front where Nissan has extracted an additional 52 kW from the new VR35DDTT 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine.

Eclipsing the 320kW/560Nm made by the previous Nismo's normally aspirated 5.6-litre V8, the twin-blown bent-six develops 369 kW and the same 700 Nm as the regular Patrol.
While no performance figures were again revealed, Nissan did disclose a significant ground clearance drop from 244 mm to 195 mm, as well as an extensively recalibrated version of the new button-operated nine-speed automatic gearbox.
Nismo outside
Externally, the Patrol Nismo's unique touches comprise Rays Engineering 22-inch nine-spoke alloy wheels, a Nismo specific mesh pattern honeycomb V-Motion grille, a new front bumper and splitter with red accents, functioning side vents on the flanks of the bumper, and black mirror caps.

Not stopping there, it also gets red accented extended door sills, a supposed aerodynamically optimised bootlid spoiler, and a new bumper with squared-off side flanks as a result of the rear diffuser fitted below.
Aside from body-coloured wheel arches, Nissan has availed five colours options; White Pearl, Black Pearl, Grey Metallic, Blue Metallic and specifically devised hue called Stealth Grey. As option, all of the hues can be contrasted with a black roof.
Changed underneath
Underneath, and beside its lowered ride height, the Patrol Nismo measures 90 mm longer and 40 mm wider than the standard Patrol, while also being five kilograms heavier at 2 817 kg.
Adding to this is a claimed 23% improvement in structural rigidity, new electronically controlled adaptive dampers, revised suspension and power steering, and a recalibrated Vehicle Dynamic Control module.
As well as retuned driving modes, the Nismo further gets uprated brakes with improved cooling, and a new exhaust system that uses the audio system's speakers to pump the engine's soundtrack into cabin as part of what Nissan calls Active Sound Enhancement.
Compared to its sibling, the mechanical changes has seen the Nismo's approach angle drop from 27.5-degrees to 23-degrees, its breakover from 27-degrees to 26-degrees, and its departure from 27-degrees to 25.5-degrees.
Racy inside
Inside, the Patrol Nismo retains the eight-seat layout of the regular model, but with Nismo specific additions in the form of alloy pedals, real carbon fibre inserts, black-and-red stitch work, red 12 o'clock marking on the Nismo-branded steering wheel, a red starter button, leather and suede-trimmed seats and red decorative inserts.

A special honeycomb quilted pattern for the seats, together with Nismo embroidery work on the front headrests, round the interior off, along with red seatbelts and Nismo badges.
Yes for US, not for us
Approved for the Middle East from July, with pricing being listed at 449 900 dirham in the United Arab Emirates – which equates to a directly converted R2 174 408 – the Patrol Nismo has, for the first time, also been approved for its other key market, the United States, where it will be sold as the Armada Nismo.

Revealed at the same time as in the Middle East, the Armada Nismo comes with reduced power of 343 kW with no change in torque having taken place.
The same applies to the interior and exterior, which carries over bar a red leather finish on the seats.

Locally, sales of Patrol have been approved for 2026, the same as Australia, however, this is not expected to include the Nismo which will remain a left-hand-drive only model.

How spinning is becoming South Africa's fastest growing motorsport
ALTHOUGH not mainstream but spinning is becoming the fastest growing sports in South African. | Supplied Image: Supplied Words could never really describe the feeling you get when you see a BMW E30 in a roll back burnout which ends up clouding the area around it with smoke. You can hear the car's engine limiting like it's going to break, and then all of a sudden…it disappears in a cloud of white smoke. It's not so much a sport but a stirrer of emotions, mainly adrenaline, which permeates throughout the drivers, stuntmen and the spectators alike. There's no real point structure like the Super Drift series, but rather, spinning is mainly judged by the crowd's applause - which makes it the most interactive motorsport to date. South Africa can be looked at as a pioneer of the sport, which is now entertaining crowds in Austria (shout out to Samkeliso Thubane). The amount of raw, young talent bubbling to the surface right now in the world of spinning is a breath of fresh air. Troubles got into the sport at 13-years-old as a stuntman and knew since then that he was destined to be a driver. A decade later, the colourful spinner drives his own Nissan VQ25 swapped BMW E30. His 'boxshape' has been fitted with a 5-speed BMW gearbox to go with the V6 Nissan power plant and runs on a Spitronics engine management system. The diff's also been welded locked. 'I think immediately after getting into the sport as a youngster, I wanted to drive one day. But I was small and didn't have the money so I became a stuntman just to stay close to the sport and grow as well. 'I used to be a stuntman for a guy named Rogan from Reiger Park Spinners. We competed mainly in Vosloorus, Soweto and Soshanguve. Since then, I think the crowds have really grown, mainly because of social media. There's a lot more attention on the sport now, especially after Sam Sam became a star and went all over the world. 'I think as a spinner, he reached the pinnacle of the sport and we all would like to be like that and go around the world spinning. Things are moving here in South Africa though and I'm sure it will grow the sport,' du Plessis said. Troubles even got himself a stuntman now - Dillon 'Toppie' Holster. Holster is often holding on to the side of the E30 for the past two years. "I enjoy hanging out of the car and showing that I fear nothing. The best part about spinning is showing off our skills. Since I started with McKeenan the sport has really grown and I hope one day people can watch it on TV like a real sport," Holster said. Image: Auto Rush Why so popular? Unlike drag racing and circuit or drifting, spinning doesn't require a private vault filled with cash to be successful. Do not misunderstand that, however, you do need money to get started but it is possible to develop in the sport with a 'beginner' level car. More experienced drivers tend to spruce their cars up with more power but that must be accommodated by other modifications to support the power - which is when it starts getting very expensive. Hence, most spinners try keep it as simple possible. What separates spinning from other motorsports though, is the fact that you do not need too many specialized parts in your vehicle when it comes to the gearbox, suspension or engine. A drag racing vehicle for instance, needs a custom gearbox, suspension and fuel system or else you are swatting flies with a chopstick. In short, a drag racing vehicle has to be completely rebuilt with aftermarket parts for it to be "win". Spinning on the other hand, is more about style than about speed. Its about expressing yourself and standing out from your competitors through different tricks, stunts and your stuntman. Engines on a spin car also undergo a serious amount of pressure but it's the differential that takes the most beating because of the constant locking and unlocking motion. Most spinners have opted to weld the differential at a locked position to keep the wheels spinning more easily. The cars in the sport are not necessarily the prettiest and that's because they often take a bump or two every now and again. Drivers do not care so much about the aesthetic appeal of their cars but mainly the engine, gearbox and suspension. The gearbox is not much of a deciding factor when building a spin car and it is possible to "get away" on a budget option although not advised.

Nissan shareholders assail management over deepening crisis
Nissan Motor shareholders vented their frustrations over the carmaker's poor performance at its AGM on Tuesday, with some demanding greater management accountability for the deepening crisis at Japan's third-largest car company. The meeting was the first for new boss Ivan Espinosa since he replaced Makoto Uchida as CEO in April. It remains to be seen whether Espinosa, a company veteran, will be able to halt the sharp decline at Nissan. Shares have fallen some 36% over the past year and dividend payments have been suspended. Nissan reported a $4.5bn (R80.2bn) net loss in the last financial year and there is no guarantee it will return to profit this year — so far, it has declined to give a full-year earnings forecast, and has estimated a first-quarter loss of ¥200bn (R24.4bn). All the same, shareholders voted down a number of proposals that the company had opposed, including an activist-shareholder proposal that would have forced Nissan to take action on listed subsidiary Nissan Shatai. Espinosa has laid out plans for big cuts, including closing seven plants and shedding a total of 20,000 jobs, or about 15% of Nissan's workforce. One shareholder accused the board of trying to 'shift its responsibility to front-line workers' by cutting jobs while retaining their own positions. The board should likewise face a shake-up or risk losing the trust of shareholders and company employees, the shareholder said. Another shareholder complained about the cut to the dividend. Tokyo-based activist shareholder Strategic Capital had pressed Nissan to take action on its listed subsidiary as part of its overhaul. While that proposal was defeated, the breakdown of the vote won't be known until later. Japanese companies are under increasing pressure from the Tokyo Stock Exchange and regulators to clear up so-called 'parent-child listings', which are seen as unfair to minority shareholders and a drag on governance. In one prominent example, Toyota Motor this month unveiled plans to take private its listed subsidiary, Toyota Industries, in a complex, $33bn (R584.25bn) transaction that some shareholders have said undervalues the forklift operator. Toyota likely took action because 'it felt pressure from shareholders and thought it had to change,' said Tsuyoshi Maruki, the CEO of Strategic Capital, in an interview with Reuters on Monday. He said he hoped Nissan's management could also give the issue similar consideration. Nissan owns 50% of Nissan Shatai, which manufactures cars for the carmaker. Strategic Capital owns 3.5% of Nissan Shatai. It has also acquired a small stake in Nissan, allowing it to submit proposals to the general meeting. It has proposed that Nissan change its articles of incorporation so that it would be required to annually examine its relationship with listed subsidiaries and disclose what action, if any, it planned to take. Nissan's board has opposed that and said changing its articles of incorporation would hinder its flexibility.
