Emotional Federico Chiesa thanks Diogo Jota for 'helping' him score crucial Liverpool goal

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Federico Chiesa came off the bench to fire home at the Kop end as the reigning champions rallied to secure a 4-2 win over Bournemouth on the opening night of the season
An emotional Federico Chiesa felt his crucial late goal in Liverpool's opening night win over Bournemouth was meant to be - because he had Diogo Jota by his side.

On an Anfield evening which began with tributes to Jota and his brother Andre Silva, Chiesa came off the bench to score his first Premier League goal at the Kop end just as it looked as though the Reds had thrown away two points against the Cherries, who came from two goals down to level matters thanks to a brilliant brace from Antoine Semenyo.

But the Italian - who has been tipped by many to leave Anfield this summer after making just 14 appearances last season - then fired home a volley in the 88th minute, before Mo Salah wrapped up the 4-2 win in added time.

'Above all, at Anfield it seems like in the second half when you attack towards the Kop, it feels like the ball wants to go inside the net," said Chiesa, who remains a fan favourite with Reds supporters despite his lack of action, with his song regularly sung on the Kop.
'And today, I want to think that we had also the help of Diogo and his brother up there.'
Chiesa added that the memory of Jota will inspire the reigning champions as they bid to defend their crown.
'It was really emotional today and after I scored, my thoughts went to Diogo, to Andre, to his family who were here today. It was really emotional. The goal was for him," he added.
'In my mind, I think that Diogo was somewhere in here helping me to score this goal. I'd like to think like that. He's always with us, he's going to be with us.

'It was tough today but there was a great atmosphere, the fans were amazing throughout the game. Also, I'm really grateful for the song they're singing. Really, really emotional.'
Reds boss Arne Slot insists Chiesa does still have a future at Anfield despite being linked with several clubs in Italy.
"As long as he is here it [his future] is definitely at Liverpool and I have no reason to believe it is going to change," said Slot.
"The fans sung for him so many times last season and it is very nice for him to give them something in return."

Man Utd transfer news: Ruben Amorim sends Rasmus Hojlund warning after Arsenal snub

Rasmus Hojlund was left out of Manchester United's squad to face Arsenal, increasingly speculation over his future following the recent arrival of Benjamin Sesko for £74million New season, same problems. Manchester United kicked off their 2025-26 Premier League campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. ‌ By failing to score and conceding from a set piece, it felt like deja vu for Red Devils supporters. But as Ruben Amorim put it, they weren't 'boring' like last season. ‌ The United boss was encouraged with his side's performance, as the Old Trafford crowd applauded them off at full-time. Fans were off their feet watching new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo while Benjamin Sesko made his debut in the second half. ‌ Sesko's inclusion in the squad came at the expense of Rasmus Hojlund, who's the subject of interest from clubs across Europe, including AC Milan. Sales are United's priority for the remainder of the summer transfer window which closes on September 1. Here's a round-up of the latest transfer news from Old Trafford. Amorim sends Hojlund clear message Ruben Amorim has warned Rasmus Hojlund that he'll remain on the sidelines if he doesn't 'do what's required'. Hojlund, 22, watched from the stands against Arsenal, with Benjamin Sesko quickly usurping him in the pecking order. "At United, if you don't do what's required, a team-mate will take your place," Amorim said. "I've made a lot of mistakes, but I've shown that if you deserve it, you play." The Red Devils manager added: "He has to fight for his place. We will see what's going to happen in the market. Rasmus has the same characteristics as Ben, so sometimes we need to chose." ‌ Roma make contact over Malacia Roma are in talks to sign Tyrell Malacia, who's keen to leave Manchester United before transfer deadline day. The Dutch left-back was part of a five-man bomb squad who didn't travel on the Red Devils' pre-season tour of the USA. According to reports from Italy, Roma asked United about the conditions for signing Malacia during the clubs' talks over Jadon Sancho. Bestikas are also interested in the 26-year-old. ‌ Baleba breaks silence after Brighton opener Carlos Baleba has broken his silence amid links of a move to Manchester United. Baleba, 21, started Brighton 's 1-1 draw with Fulham on Saturday, just over a week after the Red Devils made contact with Brighton to register their interest in the Cameroonian midfielder, who's been given a new shirt number this season. "Just me doing the thing I love most. Had fun playing at home with the boys," Baleba said on Instagram post-match. "Nothing new here, just my number and a haircut."

Dominic Calvert-Lewin a gamble worth taking for Leeds

The 28-year-old striker, dogged by injury in recent seasons, became a free agent this summer, ending nine years at Everton and signing a three-year deal with Leeds on Friday in a bid to revive his career. He could make his debut against his former club on Monday when the two sides launch their Premier League campaigns at Elland Road. 🎙️ "Dominic is a proven Premier League player" — Leeds United (@LUFC) August 16, 2025 Farke said: 'Let's be open about it. It's always a bit risky to sign players who've had difficult years with a few injuries. There are always question marks and doubts. 'But the second part of the truth is that if he had his prime season last season he wouldn't be on the market for us. 'He wouldn't be a free agent and affordable for a newly promoted side, so you have to think about the balance of risk and reward.' Calvert-Lewin has struggled to replicate the goalscoring form which saw him earn 11 caps for England, making his last appearance against Ukraine in 2021 in the European Championship quarter-finals. He scored 21 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions for Everton during the 2020-21 season, but has failed to reach double figures since. 'If he can reach his former heights everyone will celebrate and tell us it's a bargain for us to get a striker who is normally not affordable for a newly promoted side, so well done,' Farke said. 'But the worst-case scenario is that yes, perhaps his injuries will limit a bit his time here for Leeds United – that's the second part of the truth. 'But it's important for us we have not spent one pound in transfer fees because he is a free agent, so it's not much of a risk.' 🔜 The roar of Elland Road awaits! — Leeds United (@LUFC) August 15, 2025 Calvert-Lewin is reported to have turned down the offer of a three-year contract worth £18million from Fenerbahce in favour of a move to Leeds. Farke added: 'He's so highly motivated to play for this club. He's fully committed and still has the desire to reach his former heights. 'In the end this was a no-brainer for me because we can win a lot, but we don't lose much and didn't risk anything on a transfer fee because he's a free agent. 'We still have money then to also strengthen in a few other positions. 'So looking at the whole picture, yes there are a few question marks and a few doubts, but the chances are way higher than the problems or the risk.'

Roy Keane and Micah Richards clash over Altay Bayindir's role in Arsenal winner

The United keeper was unable to deal with a first-half corner under pressure from William Saliba and Riccardo Calafiori nodded in on the line at the far post for what proved to be the only goal. Former United midfielder Keane had no sympathy for the Turk, who appealed for a foul, with the Sky Sports pundit saying: 'He has to come with violence, he's got to be aggressive, he's got to be almost saying to players, 'Come in here, I'm happy to deal with it'. "Micah, this is big boy stuff!" Roy Keane and Micah Richards trade blows over Altay Bayındır's decision-making for Arsenal's goal… 😬 — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 17, 2025 'But he's not strong enough. It's like schoolboy stuff. Don't look at the referee, take control of it.' Fellow pundit Richards, though, argued Bayindir should have been better protected by his defence, saying: 'If you look at the balance between Saliba and (Mason) Mount, he's getting ragdolled everywhere. 'I just thought (Matthijs) De Ligt could have come inside and Mount could have gone outside. I agree with Roy, Bayindir should have done a lot better, but when you've got bodies in front of you…' That prompted Keane to interject, with the pair raising their voices to the apparent amusement of fellow pundit Daniel Sturridge. 'The goalkeeper's on his heels, he should be on his toes. Saliba's doing very little to him,' retorted Keane. 'The job of that player in that role is to protect the goalkeeper so he can come and punch it,' hit back Richards. 'There's a lot of chaos going on.' Keane had the final word, adding: 'This is big boy stuff. You can't babysit a goalkeeper. He should go and play chess.' United dominated the chances but were unable to find an equaliser, and Keane did not share in optimism around the Red Devils' start to the campaign. "The expectations are so low that everyone's almost happy!" Roy Keane still isn't convinced about Man Utd following a more encouraging defeat to Arsenal… — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 17, 2025 'The expectations at United now are so low that even when Gary (Neville) is on commentary, everyone's even comfortable with a 1-0 defeat,' he said. 'United have got to do better. It does worry me. Obviously, a couple of the new signings, a lot of encouragement with that. Getting up the pitch there was a bit more power. 'Obviously results are going to improve, it's always tough against Arsenal, but again no goal, another defeat. There's still problems there with United.'
