ARLINGTON, Texas — Josh Smith homered and scored all three Texas runs in his fifth consecutive two-hit game to help the Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1 on Friday night.
The leadoff hitter had a single in the first and scored on Corey Seager's sacrifice fly. Smith's seventh homer was a 396-foot drive to right-center in the third, then he walked ahead of Marcus Semien's RBI double that made it 3-0 in the fifth.

Leo is the first person from the United States elected to serve as Pope. Long before he was Pope, Prevost witnessed his White Sox win the 2005 World Series, capturing baseball's title for the first time in 88 years after winning four straight games over the Houston Astros. In addition to the Pope's address, Saturday's event features a serenade from a Chicago Catholic school boys' choir competing on the reality TV program America's Got Talent. Chicago Bulls play-by-play voice Chuck Swirsky is serving as Master of Ceremonies. The taped appearance comes just over a month after the 69-year-old was elected to the Papacy, to the delight of many Chicagoans and its large Catholic population. The Archdiocese of Chicago estimates more than 2 million Catholics live in the region. Saturday's festivities come a week after the Pope asked God to "open borders, break down walls and dispel hatred," during weekly mass in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. On Friday, the Pope confirmed the date on which Italian teenager Carlo Acutis will be canonized. Acutis, who died at the age of 15 from leukemia in 2006, will become the first saint from the millennial generation on Sept. 7.

But there is another way the team could land such a player — through free agency. Unfortunately, signing a viable center in free agency won't be easy. If LeBron James were to opt out of his current contract and sign a new one while taking a reasonable pay cut, the Lakers could gain access to the full mid-level exception of roughly $14 million. But he's not expected to take a pay cut, and as a result, they will likely only have the much smaller $5.7 million taxpayer mid-level exception. Advertisement However, there is always a chance $5.7 million could be enough to obtain Brook Lopez, a veteran center who has spent the last seven seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks. According to Gary Woelfel, a sportswriter in Wisconsin, one NBA executive thinks the Lakers have already had contact with Lopez. Lopez is 37 years of age, but he was still productive this season. He averaged 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.9 blocks a game while shooting 50.9% from the field and 37.3% from 3-point range this season. The 7-foot-1, 282-pound center once played for the Lakers during the 2017-18 season, and he spent his early childhood in the San Fernando Valley. While in Milwaukee, he won an NBA championship during the 2020-21 campaign.
