Stand up for what is fair and just, law students told
Judge of the High Court of Karnataka Venkatesh Naik T. has emphasised need for law students to stand up for what is fair and just and never waver from their commitment to justice.
Inaugurating the 11th Kannada Moot Court Competition organised by Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) in Hubballi on Saturday, he said that it is most important for law students to maintain Swadharma, inculcate principles ,work hard and maintain dignity in court halls.
Emphasising the need for participating in moot court competitions as they help in enhancement of writing skills, research skills, oral advocacy skills, analytical skills and critical thinking, he said that these skills are crucial for court room success and vital attributes for a successful legal career.
Elaborating on various legal career options for students, he said that law students should explore options of being Panel Advocate, Judge, Notary, Government Pleader, Advocate General, jobs and partnership in law firms and so on.
Mr. Naik stressed on the need for students to make efforts to have an understanding of varied fields as it will help in their career and also called upon them to become models for others through their good professional and personal conduct.
Presiding over the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor of KSLU C. Basavaraju said that the legal fraternity has the enormous responsibility of working towards building a healthy society and to make it free from all social evils.
Prof. Basavaraju said that teaching law and values together will bring about a positive change in society.
Registrar Evaluation and Director KSLU Law School Ratna Bharamagoudar, Finance Officer Sanjeev Kumar Singh and others were present.
Students of law schools from across the State are participating in the annual event.

Karnataka High Court declines to quash case against KIADB officer caught while returning alleged bribe amount
The High Court of Karnataka has refused to quash a corruption case against an officer of the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), who was caught in a 'reverse-trap' case when he was returning the alleged bribe money of ₹3 lakh in cash to the complainant. 'In a reverse trap scenario, the public servant allegedly returns money previously received as illegal gratification. These facts, when projected before the court, require a complex evidentiary matrix. The issues that arise in cases of reverse trap are distinct from a traditional trap. The central twist in a reverse trap would be as to why the public servant returns the money,' the court said. The court said the case requires investigation to demonstrate the innocence of a public servant, as the matter is still at the stage of investigation, to clear obfuscation about whether the bribe was ever demanded or accepted in the first place. Justice M. Nagaprasanna passed the order while dismissing a petition filed by A.B. Vijaya Kumar, who was working as Special Land Acquisition Officer (SLAO)-2 at KIADB, Bengaluru, during September 2022. The complainant, B.S. Arun, had alleged that he had sought a no-objection certificate from the KIADB for construction related to a temple at Laggere in Bengaluru. Though the petitioner-SLAO had demanded ₹4 lakh bribe and received ₹2.5 lakh through another person from his office for issuing the NoC, the document was not issued despite repeated requests. Hence, Mr. Arun had lodged a complaint with the Special Deputy Commissioner of the KIADB alleging that the petitioner was not issuing the NoC despite receiving the bribe. Following this complaint, the petitioner issued the NoC and is said to have offered to return the bribe amount as a donation to the temple with a request to Mr. Arun to withdraw the complaint made to the Special Deputy Commissioner. The Lokayukta police, acting on the complaint by Mr. Aurn, caught the petitioner red-handed when he was returning ₹3 lakh to the complainant. But it was argued on behalf of the petitioner that the complaint could not have been registered as there was no material for demand and acceptance besides there being mismatch of ₹50,000 between the alleged bribe amount received and returned. However, the court declined to interfere in the investigation, stating that the probe is essential to find out whether the bribe was in fact demanded and accepted as per the law.

51% of all new forest dept jobs to be reserved for women: Naik
1 2 3 Chandrapur: In a landmark step towards gender inclusivity in forest governance, Maharashtra forest minister Ganesh Naik on Thursday announced that henceforth, 51% of all new recruitments in the forest department will be reserved for women. Naik made this announcement while inaugurating two-day national conference 'Van Shakti 2025' in Chandrapur, focused on recognising and amplifying role of women in forest conservation and management. Addressing a packed audience of IFS officers, frontline workers, self-help group members, and eco-tourism stakeholders, the minister urged women to step forward and actively participate in the forestry sector. The conference, themed around empowering women across the forestry spectrum, aims to foster dialogue, share experiences, and co-develop a policy paper that enhances equitable participation of women. It also seeks to explore legal and structural reforms for their professional growth in the sector. Addressing media persons on the sidelines, Naik also clarified the department's stand on transferring captured wild animals to private zoos, a topic recently raised in a meeting at the Mantralaya. "While some MLAs have suggested handing over injured or mentally unstable tigers to private facilities for treatment, we will strictly follow central govt regulations before taking any such decision," he said. Land identified for 'Suryatara' wildlife rehab centre: Naik also disclosed developments regarding the proposed 'Suryatara' wildlife rehabilitation centre on the lines of Gujarat's 'Vantara'. "We have identified land in Thane and have also corresponded with Anant Ambani, director on the boards of Reliance Industries and Reliance Foundation, and brain behind 'Vantara' project. A team of senior forest officials will study and take the project forward within legal frameworks," Naik stated. AI-backed surveillance to curb human-wildlife conflict: In view of increasing human-wildlife conflicts, especially in vulnerable districts like Chandrapur, Naik announced deployment of AI-backed surveillance technologies. "We will install camera systems integrated with alarms in sensitive forest pockets to immediately alert residents about predator movement," he said. Other mitigation steps include solar and chain-link fencing, and habitat development to reduce the outflow of herbivores. The minister also directed forest secretary Mahesh Mhaisekar to draw up a proposal to scrap all 10-year-old vehicles in the department and replace them with sturdy, new ones for frontline staff. "It was during my earlier tenure in 1995 that vehicles were first introduced for forest officers. Today, we're taking that commitment further," he said. Firearms to officers, junior staff in vulnerable pockets: Forest minister also assured to provide firearms to all officers and even junior staff in vulnerable pockets, in coming days. 11 crore tree plantation initiative: Naik also informed about a mega 11 crore tree plantation initiative across Maharashtra. He also announced that the number of honorary wildlife wardens will be increased, with plans to appoint wardens at taluka level instead of existing district-level model.
