The Reds cruised to top spot in the group stage despite losing to PSV with a much changed line up and will not have to navigate a two-legged playoff next month.
Arne Slot was able to rest his star players in Eindhoven with one eye on this weekend's Premier League encounter with Bournemouth. His side is joined by the likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa in the last 16 but Manchester City still has plenty of work to do and now faces Real Madrid.

Kane saves England as Dutch and Austrians open World Cup campaigns with wins

England kept their World Cup qualifying on track with an ugly 1-0 win while Austria and the Netherlands made belated starts to their campaigns with victories on Saturday. Harry Kane's 72nd international goal ensured England avoided the ultimate embarrassment of failing to beat Andorra. Even so, Thomas Tuchel's side were booed off in Barcelona after struggling to impress against a team ranked 173rd in the world. Advertisement Tuchel is the first England manager to win his first three competitive games without conceding a goal. But given the paucity of opposition provided by Andorra, Latvia and Albania in the Group K qualifiers, that achievement rings a little hollow after this miserable display. "I'm not happy with the performance. We completely lost the momentum and couldn't get it back. We ended up in a place that was not good enough in terms of urgency," Tuchel said. "We can just admit it that it's not what we expect from us. I was most worried in the last 20 minutes because I didn't like the attitude we ended the game with. Advertisement "I didn't like the lack of urgency. It did not match the occasion. It is still a World Cup qualifier." England pulled five points clear after three matches in Group K as second-placed Albania drew 0-0 at home with Serbia. Rey Manaj of Albania wasted a penalty in first-half added time. Serbia was one of three teams playing their first qualifying match Saturday after they had been involved in Nations League playoffs. Netherlands made their debut with a crisp 2-0 win over Finland in Helsinki. Memphis Depay scored after six minutes. Denzil Dumfries, one week after his unhappy experience playing for Inter Milan in the Champions League final, added the second after 23 minutes. Advertisement Netherlands jumped to third in Group G, overtaking Lithuania and Malta who drew 0-0. The Dutch are one point behind Finland and three behind leaders Poland who did not play. Marcel Sabitzer and Michael Gregoritsch scored as Austria beat Romania 2-1 in Vienna. Florin Tanase headed an added-time reply for the visitors who had squandered several chances in the closing stages. Bosnia-Herzegovina lead Group H on nine points after Edin Dzeko scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory home over San Marino. Romania, Cyprus and Austria all have three points. smg-pb/

Chicago Sky Coach Sends Message After Angel Reese Decision

Chicago Sky Coach Sends Message After Angel Reese Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Chicago's recent back-to-back wins over Dallas highlighted a shift in the Sky's approach as they edged out the Wings 97-92 at Wintrust Arena on May 29, followed by a 94-83 victory at College Park Center on May 31. Advertisement Those contests snapped a four-game skid to open the 2025 season, moving the Sky to 2-4 and injecting some much-needed energy into a roster still finding its identity under first-year head coach Tyler Marsh. The Sky's back-to-back victories also showcased Marsh's willingness to experiment, in particular, with turning to a smaller closing lineup featuring Angel Reese at the center spot. On Friday, when asked by Chicago State of Mind Sports about that lineup choice, Marsh explained, "I mean, I like the spacing that it provides, the versatility that allows us to have on both ends of the floor. We could see different looks of that with a smaller lineup... So we'll continue to search out some things and see what works." In the home win against the Wings, Kamilla Cardoso led the scoring with 23 points, and Reese chipped in nine rebounds despite a modest scoring output. Advertisement Two nights later, Ariel Atkins poured in 26 points to help seal the road win over Dallas, with Reese again leading the way with nine boards against a physical Wings frontcourt. Marsh's comments underscore a commitment to flexibility, even if relying on a 6-foot-3 player like Reese in the five spot might defy conventional wisdom. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Last season, Reese emerged as one of the most talked-about rookies in the WNBA. After a star-studded college career at LSU, one that featured a national championship win over Caitlin Clark's Iowa Hawkeyes in 2023, Reese was selected seventh overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Sky. Advertisement As a rookie, Reese averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds (led the league) per game, earning All-Star and All-Rookie honors. Another starting pitcher joined the list on Saturday, via the team's social media. Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin (26).Jerome Miron-Imagn Images "The Dodgers activated RHPs Michael Kopech and Kirby Yates from the injured list, designated RHP Chris Stratton for assignment and placed RHP Tony Gonsolin on the injured list with right elbow discomfort," the club announced before its bout with the St. Louis Cardinals (35-28) on Saturday afternoon. Advertisement Gonsolin is 3-2 with a 5.00 ERA over seven starts this season. The 31-year-old didn't pitch last year and coughed up a 4.85 ERA over 20 starts in 2023. His best campaign was in 2022, when he went 16-1 with a 2.14 ERA across 24 starts. Los Angeles is one game ahead of the San Diego Padres (36-26) and two ahead of the San Francisco Giants (36-28) for first place in the NL West.
