New West Bengal BJP president: Samik Bhattacharya replaces Sukanta Majumdar; unanimously elected state chief
Bhattacharya, the lone nominee for the post, submitted his nomination on Wednesday at the BJP's Salt Lake office in Kolkata, accompanied by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and outgoing state chief Sukanta Majumdar.

Bhattacharya, who flew in from New Delhi to file his nomination, had earlier met BJP national president JP Nadda on Monday at his residence in the capital.
'A party president changes, and the baton is handed over. It's a continuous process. The principles of the party remain the same,' Bhattacharya told reporters.
Bhattacharya, a seasoned BJP member for over four decades, began his political journey with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1971.
He served over ten years as state general secretary of the BJP's youth wing (BJYM) and was instrumental in maintaining coordination between the RSS and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), according to a senior BJP functionary.
His organisational credentials include serving three consecutive terms as BJP state general secretary and being part of the party's national council.
In 2014, he won the Basirhat assembly bypoll, securing the seat from the CPM and boosting BJP's vote share in the region from 4% in 2011 to 33.5%.
Known for his academic depth and calm demeanour, Bhattacharya earned wide respect as BJP's state spokesperson and often served as the party's crisis manager. He also played a prominent role in the party's global outreach during Operation Sindoor.
'Bhattacharya is well accepted by party veterans as well as the newcomers. He has constantly been working as a bridge between the old and the new. He has travelled to every district and has close contact with party workers.

Even if it involved Dilip Ghosh or Sukanta Majumdar, Bhattacharya was always the person to resolve differences,' a Bengal BJP leader said.
During his political career, Bhattacharya has earned a reputation for his accessibility and simplicity. 'He is one of the very few party netas who still don't use personal guards,' said another party senior. However, with his elevation to state president, that may soon change.

The Odisha Administrative Service Association announced the mass leaves and placed three non-negotiable demands before the Mohan Majhi government. The association has asked for Pradhan's immediate arrest, security provisions for all field-level executive officers and a public condemnation of the attack from the state government. The association has also submitted a memorandum, calling Pradhan the 'prime accused and kingpin' behind the attack, to Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja. 'Considering the widespread discontentment of all the members of the Association working across the state, it has been decided that all OAS officers will continue to be on leave until the demands are met,' the memorandum said. On Tuesday, Pradhan had blamed Sahoo for misbehaving with him and a woman sanitation worker, which led to the assault. Pradhan later condemned the assault, the Indian Express has reported. While Odisha revenue minister Suresh Pujari has urged officers to return to work in light of the ongoing Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath and the flood-like situation in the state's northern districts, the officers' body has said that the incident has hit the morale of officers across the state. BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagenthran on Friday (July 4, 2025) alleged that the law and order situation in the State is rapidly deteriorating, and that the Police Department is no longer functioning under the command of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Speaking to journalists in Chennai, the BJP leader said, 'The Police Department appears to be taking orders from some officials in the Secretariat.' Referring to the custodial death of B. Ajith Kumar, a security guard at the Bathrakaliamman Temple in Madapuram in Sivaganga district, Mr. Nagenthran said: 'It was not a case of custodial death, but a clear case of murder by the police. Ajith Kumar was abducted and killed by the police.' Mr. Nagenthran said he would take part in the launch of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami's Statewide tour and that BJP functionaries would also join the AIADMK leader in the districts. He declined to comment when asked if any National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders had approached actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, inviting it to join the alliance.
