"There Are Kathavachaks Who Charge Rs 50 Lakh": Akhilesh Yadav Jabs Dhirendra Shastri
Amid an ongoing controversy over the assault on a non-Brahmin ' kathavachak ' (religious storyteller) in Uttar Pradesh's Etawah, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday took a jibe at religious leader Acharya Dhirendra Shastri and said there are many storytellers who charge Rs 50 lakh.
"Many kathavachaks charge Rs 50 lakh for an event. Can anyone afford Dhirendra Shastri for a katha (religious ceremony) at their residence? He takes the money under the table," he told reporters in Hindi.
Mr Yadav said he doesn't know how much Mr Shastri, also known as Bageshwar Baba, charges for storytelling, but claimed "it is not free".
There was no immediate response from Mr Shastri.
'Kathavachak' Row In UP
Akhilesh Yadav's charge comes days after two Bhagwat Katha preachers, Mukut Mani Yadav, and his aide, Sant Singh Yadav, were allegedly tonsured and humiliated in a village in Etawah.
The incident on June 22 allegedly took place when it was found that they belonged to the Yadav caste.
The incident triggered widespread protests in the village and led to the arrest of four accused -- Ashish Tiwari, Uttam Kumar Awasthi, Nikki Awasthi and Manu Dubey -- all residents of the village.
Akhilesh Yadav, the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, had shared a video of the incident, which showed the accused purportedly saying, "You are getting punished for coming to the village of Brahmins."
He has attacked the ruling BJP over the alleged assault and said the incident was part of a larger conspiracy to divide Uttar Pradesh along caste lines by bringing in "planted elements" from neighbouring states.

This said investment will generate 8308 jobs in the state. Besides, an MoU with Rochak System Pvt Ltd for setting up the data centre with the investment of Rs 2508 crore and 1000 jobs will be generated.

NSUI protests against NCERT's special module on partition
New Delhi: The Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India (NSUI) protested at Delhi University's Faculty of Arts against what it termed as the RSS-BJP's hateful and distorted NCERT module. The Congress and other opposition leaders are accusing the ruling BJP of 'interfering' with the functioning of the institutions and 'distorting' the country's history after a special module, released by the NCERT to mark 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day', held Jinnah, the Congress, and then Viceroy Lord Mountbatten responsible for India's Partition. Hitting back, the BJP said that the Congress is in pain because the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has brought a 'bitter truth' of India's Partition out for the students to study. According to an NSUI statement, many students joined the protest, raising slogans to safeguard the true legacy of India's freedom struggle. Addressing the gathering, NSUI National President Varun Choudhary said, 'The history of India will not be written with lies and hatred. When the nation was fighting for freedom, these people were standing with the British.' 'The same traitors of that time are today blaming Gandhi, Nehru, and Sardar Patel with falsehoods. We will not allow the innocent children of this country to be victims of RSS and BJP's distorted history,' he said. NSUI announced that this movement will not be confined to Delhi University alone and vowed to continue the struggle in every state and university across the country until the 'hateful and misleading NCERT module' is withdrawn. The students' body asserted that restoring truth and dignity in the portrayal of India's freedom struggle is non-negotiable, and pledged to intensify its agitation in the coming days.

AC passenger alleges gang robberies on trains
New Delhi: A passenger of an AC first class coach of Himachal Express has alleged that a well-organised gang of criminals operate in trains between Kurushetra, Karnal and Panipat to loot passenger valuables amidst 'systematic negligence' from the Railways, according to an FIR. When contacted, the Delhi Rail Division, under which these stations fall, didn't respond to the allegations. Sachin Jain, a resident of Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, lodged a complaint with the Government Railway Police Sirhind (Punjab) after he became a victim of a similar incident on August 2, 2025, on the same train route. Jain said that he boarded the Himachal Express on August 1, 2025, from Rupnagar in Punjab for Delhi, and in the intervening night at around 2:30 am, when he and other passengers were sleeping, some people entered the train and looted their valuables. 'Shockingly, no TTE (Train Ticket Examiner) or RPF (Railway Protection Force) personnel were present in the coach. A group of miscreants moved freely through the train and looted multiple passengers, including myself,' Jain said in the FIR. He alleged, 'I personally lost a brown laptop bag containing a laptop and charger worth Rs 60,000 with critical business data, cash amounting to Rs 2,19,000, spectacles worth Rs 14,000, pendrive, a power bank, etc.'
