Kerala marching ahead with inclusive and sustainable development: Bindu

The Hindu24-05-2025

Kerala is marching ahead with inclusive and sustainable development, Minister for Higher Education and Social Justice R. Bindu has said.
She was addressing the valedictory session of the Ente Keralam Exhibition and Trade Fair here on Saturday, held in connection with the fourth anniversary celebrations of the Left Democratic Front government.
Dr. Bindu said the government had taken great strides to ensure land, housing, education, healthcare, employment, and basic amenities for all under a development model rooted in social justice. 'It is a matter of pride that this government has succeeded in implementing such people-centric development programmes,' she said.
'Over 4.52 lakh homes have been constructed under the LIFE Mission, with constructions ongoing to surpass five lakh beneficiaries. Land titles have been distributed to four lakh people. Internationally benchmarked public health and education services were made widely accessible. Over 7.5 lakh people were employed through the 'Vijnana Keralam' (Knowledge Kerala) initiative, aiming to hit 20 lakh jobs as promised in the manifesto,' she said, listing the achievements of the LDF government.
Minister for Revenue and Housing K. Rajan, who presided over the event, described the expo as a transparent progress report of the government, open to the public without any exaggeration or filters. The event served as a platform to showcase Kerala's development model to the world, he said.
Held at Thekkinkadu Maidan, the seven-day exhibition drew massive crowds. The event offered a unique opportunity for the public to engage with the achievements of the past nine years, brought to life through various stalls and digital experiences.
There were 189 stalls, including 151 by government departments and 38 commercial stalls, at the expo.

BJP fields Kerala Congress leader as party's candidate in Nilambur

Ending weeks of uncertainty, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national leadership in New Delhi on Sunday fielded advocate Mohan George as the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) candidate for the Nilambur Assembly byelection. Mr. George, who entered politics as a leader of the Kerala Students Congress (KSC), was a close associate of the late founder of the Kerala Congress (B) [KC(B)], R. Balakrishna Pillai, for long. He later switched to several Kerala Congress parties and joined the Kerala Congress, a United Democratic Front (UDF) ally. Voters' orientation The BJP, which initially termed the bypoll at the fag end of the second Pinarayi Vijayan government as inconsequential, had realised that it could ill-afford to remain on the sidelines in the pivotal poll, widely reckoned an approximate point of reference to gauge the orientation of Kerala voters in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly polls. Nevertheless, questions about Mr. George's current political leanings prompted the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) campaigns in Nilambur to accuse each other of 'gifting' the BJP a candidate from the Christian settler farmer community, a significant electoral bloc in the constituency. (The BJP had garnered 17,000 votes in the Nilambur Assembly segment in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.) Kerala Congress leader Mons Joseph, MLA, denied the LDF's accusation that Mr. George was a party member. He said Mr. George had switched allegiance to the Kerala Congress (M), an LDF ally. The LDF countered it by publishing photographs of Mr. George attending the Kerala Congress district convention in Malappuram last month. Communist Party of India (Marxist) State committee member and LDF's candidate for Nilambur bypoll M. Swaraj said the BJP found the UDF a favourite hunting ground to poach for ideologically ambiguous leaders, and Mr. George was the latest. BJP membership Mr. George is a Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church member, an Oriental Protestant Christian denomination. He said he would soon accept the BJP's primary membership and file his nomination papers on Monday. Mr. George said BJP leader Noble Mather had invited him to join the party. He said the Bharath Dharma Jana Sena, a BJP ally widely perceived as the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam's political arm with sizable pockets of influence in the backwards class Ezhava community, had declined the Nilambur seat and suggested his name instead. (Girish Mekkatu, a BDJS leader, garnered 12,000 votes in the 2016 Assembly elections in Nilambur. In 2021, the BJP's vote share in the constituency had dwindled to 8,500 when the party pitched its candidate T.K. Ashok Kumar.)

Momentum in favour of UDF in bypoll, says KPCC chief

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Sunny Joseph, MLA, on Sunday said that electoral contests should be seen as part of politics and not as personal rivalry and asserted that the UDF would put up a strong show in the upcoming Nilambur byelection. Speaking to reporters in Kannur, Mr. Joseph said the UDF had consistently stood with the people against the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government, both inside and outside the Assembly. 'We have seen the response of the public in the bypolls at Thrikkakara, Puthuppally and Palakkad. Even in Chelakkara, a stronghold of the LDF, support for the front has waned,' he said. In past bypolls Claiming that the momentum was in favour of the UDF, Mr. Joseph said the front had the upper hand in the recent byelections, whether to the Lok Sabha, the Assembly, or local bodies, and expected a similar outcome in Nilambur. He expressed confidence that UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath would secure a decisive victory. Commenting on the uncertainty around the candidature of P.V. Anvar, the Independent LDF-backed MLA whose resignation necessitated the bypoll, Mr. Joseph said, 'First he said he wouldn't contest, then he changed his mind. His wavering stance is evident.' On Mr. Anvar's reported meeting with Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, Mr. Joseph clarified that it was not initiated by the Congress or the UDF. 'I believe it was a friendly meeting. Many wish to see a broader unity against the Pinarayi government. Such a sentiment might have resulted in that meeting,' he said. Mr. Joseph predicted a significant vote share for the UDF in Nilambur and said the verdict would reflect the public's growing discontent with the LDF government. 'The Chief Minister doesn't even have the courage to call this an assessment of his government. The UDF is fully prepared for Nilambur,' he said.

Kerala: PV Anvar to contest Nilambur bypolls as TMC candidate

Malappuram (Kerala) [India], June 1 (ANI): All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has fielded their Kerala state coordinator, PV Anvar, as their candidate for the upcoming Nilambur bypolls, set to be held on June 19. Anvar had raised corruption allegations against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's officials and claimed that he would not be contesting the bypolls, supporting the Congress candidate instead. The byelections were necessitated after Anvar submitted his resignation on January 13 to Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer, days after holding talks with TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee. Talking about their candidate, a post by TMC read, 'Under the inspiration and guidance of Hon'ble Chairperson Smt. Mamata Banerjee, we are pleased to announce the All India Trinamool Congress candidate for the impending Kerala Legislative Bye-election scheduled for 19th June, 2025.' A few months ago, Anvar had accused CM Vijayan's political secretary P Sasi, and ADGP M R Ajith Kumar, claiming they were involved in phone tapping of ministers and journalists and also accused the ADGP and IPS officer Sujith Das of misappropriated seized gold. Anvar had claimed that there was RSS influence in the home department and Muslim youths were being framed in false cases. Following the accusations, Anvar, then an independent MLA but aligned with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the state, vowed to work for ending the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government. 'I will not contest the Nilambur by-election. I will give full support to the Congress candidate to end the Pinarayi government. The Congress should field a candidate from Nilambur. Malappuram DCC president Joy is the suitable candidate,' Anvar had told mediapersons on January 13. The byelection has political significance as it is a precursor to next year's state assembly election and will test the popularity of the current government led by CM Vijayan. Anvar has also raised the issue of human-animal conflict in the state, and also apologised to Congress MLA VD Satheesan for raising corruption allegations against him, saying that CM Vijayan's political secretary had asked him to raise those allegations. 'CM's political secretary asked me to raise corruption allegation against opposition leader VD Satheesan in the assembly. He has prepared the matter to present in the assembly. The allegation that VD Satheesan received Rs 150 crore was raised in the assembly with the permission of the Speaker. I don't know whether there was a conspiracy. I apologise to opposition leader V D Satheesan and the public for this,' he told reporters. Anvar has been the Nilambur MLA since 2016, backed by the LDF in both the 2016 and 2021 assembly elections. Notably, LDF has announced M Swaraj as their candidate, meanwhile Bharatiya Janata Party is fielding Mohan George and the United Democratic Front (UDF) announced Aryadan Shoukath. (ANI)
