MCMC among targets in red-tape reduction drive, says Fahmi
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is among several agencies targeted for reducing bureaucratic red tape, said Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications Minister announced this following praise for the Communications Ministry's success in cutting red tape through reforms.
"I have requested that efforts to overcome bureaucratic red tape be intensified and continued not just within the ministry but also among other agencies and statutory bodies under it," he said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting press conference on Thursday (June 26).
He added that one key area under review is the licence approval process within the MCMC.
"We will closely examine the application process for licence approvals submitted to the MCMC," he said.
He did not provide further details on the proposed reforms or a timeline for implementation.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday (June 25), Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar praised the Communications Ministry for initiating reforms.
The ministry was among three that received special certificates of appreciation for achievements in reducing red tape.
The Communications Ministry reduced approval time for foreign film scripts from 30 days to just seven, saving RM2.4mil per production.
The Housing and Local Government Ministry was recognised for speeding up approval times for Electric Vehicle Charging Bay Plan Certifications from 28 days to three.
The Fire and Rescue Department expedited approval for non-system-based technical plan certifications from 30 days to seven.
Meanwhile, the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) made financing in the aerospace sector more accessible.
This move generated RM17mil in regulatory savings for about 50 small and medium enterprises by increasing their production capacity by up to 30%.
Fahmi also revealed that his ministry succeeded in reducing bureaucratic red tape involving the Central Agency for Application of Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes (Puspal).
He said the agency used to take a long time to process applications but improved and expedited the process this April.
He said this made the application process for concerts and filming activities easier for both local and foreign artists or film companies.

Civil servant in Miri loses RM1.1 mln to suspected online investment scam
Her doubts began when she was unable to withdraw the promised profits. – Bernama photo MIRI (June 26): A civil servant in Miri has lost RM1.1 million after allegedly falling victim to a non-existent online investment scheme. In a statement today, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the woman, in her 30s, lodged a police report recently after realising she had been allegedly scammed by an individual impersonating an investment representative. The incident began in early December 2024, when the victim was contacted by the suspect, who offered what appeared to be a lucrative investment opportunity. She was instructed to download an app via a provided link and was promised high returns within a short period. Trusting the scheme, she transferred money in stages into a bank account given by the suspect, amounting to around RM1.1 million in total. Her doubts began when she was unable to withdraw the promised profits. Despite this, the suspect continued to demand additional payments, claiming they were necessary to process the withdrawal. 'At the time the police report was lodged, the victim had not received any of the promised returns,' Mancha said. Authorities say the case underscores the growing threat of online investment scams, particularly those targeting individuals seeking quick financial returns. Mancha advised the public to verify the legitimacy of any investment platform through official channels such as Bank Negara Malaysia at and the Securities Commission Malaysia at before committing any funds. 'Anyone who has recently transferred money to suspicious accounts or e-wallets is advised to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) by dialling 997,' he said. He also recommended using scam-identifying tools like the Whoscall app, which cross-references phone numbers against the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) database. 'Phone numbers listed in the department's 'Semak Mule' system are flagged automatically through the app,' said Mancha. As an additional safeguard, the public can verify suspicious bank account numbers or telephone lines via the police's Semak Mule portal at or check the credibility of investment companies using the Investment Checker tool provided by the Securities Commission. To stay informed about the latest scam tactics, the public are encouraged to follow JSJK PDRM and Cyber Crime Alert RMP on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. civil servant Mancha Ata miri online investment scam

About 97% of goods will be taxed under expanded SST, says Dr Wee
PETALING JAYA: About 97% of goods in the market will be taxed once the expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST) comes into effect on July 1, increasing pressure on the public, according to Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. The MCA president stated that under the new scheme, thousands of products previously exempt from SST would now be taxed. "Back in 2018, a total of 8,094 items were SST-exempted but under the expanded SST, people can only enjoy tax exemption for around 1,000 items. "The SST will apply not only to wellness and beauty products but also to traditional items such as red dates, black fungus, dried longan and snow fungus, along with basic products like butter, cheese and yogurt," he said on Thursday (June 26). In a Facebook video, Dr Wee highlighted that the SST rate had already increased from 6% to 8% on March 1, 2024. "What is more concerning about the SST is the cascading effect because it will apply to raw materials, manufacturing machinery and the end product. "This is why most business associations and guilds, from the rubber, plastics, medicine and oil palm industries to the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, have voiced their concerns. "Although the government seems ready to make a U-turn on the SST for imported fruits, I think it would be better for them to review or scrap it altogether or face the threat of a silent inflation wave in the coming months," said the Ayer Hitam MP. He added that it was unfortunate the expanded SST would start on July 1, coinciding with the rise of the base electricity tariff and increases in Port Klang tariffs. The Finance Ministry had announced that the reviewed and expanded SST, as stated in Budget 2025, would take effect on July 1. The measure aims to strengthen the country's fiscal position by increasing revenue and broadening the tax base.
