2025 Nebraska Football Predictions: Cornhuskers Ranked 30th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

This isn't your average college football ranking.
My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list:
Who do I think is good?
Why do I think they're good?
What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations?
Here is a look at where Nebraska lands in my Ultimate 136.

Top player: QB Dylan Raiola: Threw for 2,819 yards last season and completed 67.1% of his passes, setting freshman program records in both; led all FBS true freshmen in completion percentage and ranked third in passing yards.

RJ's take: For nearly 40 years, I tell the kiddos, you could count on Nebraska to do three things: win at least nine games, win at least one national championship every eight years and run that triple-option that was heaven for Huskers fans and hell for everybody else. So to watch Nebraska slowly climb out of the cellar it went into when it left the Big 12 for the Big Ten has been more humbling than asking one of the aforementioned kiddos what "rizz" is.

Just last season, Huskers fans celebrated their first trip to a bowl game in eight years. And, in that way, the Matt Rhule era is doing what it's supposed to. Heading into Year 3 with a QB who enjoyed a brilliant true freshman season in Dylan Raiola, a coordinator who is as inventive as he is entertaining in Dana Holgorsen, and a clear vision for how to win in the modern era from athletic director Troy Dannen on down, it's time for Nebraska to compete for championships.
In Year 3 at Temple, Rhule won 10 games. In Year 3 at Baylor, he won 11. It's not out of the question for the Huskers to win double-digit games this season with a schedule that features only two teams ranked in my preseason top 25 — Michigan and Penn State — and only one of those is on the road. In fact, the Huskers go on the road just four times this season.
Raiola is more than capable of throwing for 3,500 yards with 30 touchdowns. He's just going to need Jacory Barney, Dane Key and Nyziah Hunter to step up and catch those passes. Three starters return to the offensive line, and former Oklahoma linebacker Dasan McCullough could be an All-Big Ten defender along with former Georgia Southern defender Marques Watson-Trent, who has averaged just short of 122 tackles per season each of the last three years. If Ceyair Wright blossoms into the kind of safety he showed himself capable of last year with two interceptions, including one he returned for a house call, we could be talking about Nebraska reaching the College Football Playoff for the first time.

Random Ramsdom: Dak Prescott expects a rematch in the NFC Championship
Say what you want to a certain extent about Dak Prescott, but you can't say he has low expectations, as Prescott reportedly told Stan Kroenke that he would see the Los Angeles Rams again in the NFC Championship game. I like Prescott, I think he's a true starting caliber quarterback in the NFL, and he does a lot for mental health and for others less fortunate them him, and what can I say? I love that. But if I am being real, I am not expecting the Cowboys to get past the Eagles in the NFC East, let alone make the NFC Championship game, but he can prove me wrong. College football Top 25: No. 5 Georgia going for a 3rd SEC title in 4 seasons
College football officially begins this month. Now that it's August, there are less than two weeks until Kansas State and Iowa State meet in Dublin to begin the 2025 regular season. And since the season is quickly approaching, we're rolling out our preseason Top 25. Next up in our rankings is the No. 5 team, and the rest will be revealed in the coming days. (All odds are from BetMGM.) Previously: Nos. 11 through 25, No. 10 Miami, No. 9 Alabama, No. 8 Notre Dame, No. 7 LSU, No. 6 Ohio State No. 5 Georgia 2024 record: 11-3 National championship odds: +700 Odds to make College Football Playoff: -285 [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] 2024 in 100 words The Bulldogs throttled Clemson in the opener to exhibit why they were the No. 1 team in the country to begin the season. However, the flaws of this Georgia team were on full display in the first half of a 41-34 loss at Alabama in Week 5. Yes, Georgia made a valiant effort to come back and almost win, but the Bulldogs' offense simply wasn't as good as it needed to be in key moments. Georgia got a big 30-15 win over Texas in October, but scored just 10 points in a loss at Ole Miss. The Bulldogs again beat the Longhorns in the SEC championship game, but scored 10 points in the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame and went one-and-done in the College Football Playoff. The quarterback Gunner Stockton Stockton got an early introduction as Georgia's starting QB. He was forced to enter the SEC title game in the second half after Carson Beck suffered what turned out to be a season-ending elbow injury on the final play of the first half. Stockton started the Sugar Bowl and wasn't overwhelmed; he was 20-of-32 passing for 234 yards and a TD. 'The one thing that I really appreciate about Gunner and most quarterbacks is he prepared every game as if he was the starter,' Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said. 'People can say that and say that's coach-speak, but he actually did it. He went in, watched extra tape, and he knew that at any point in time, he could be called up to go into the game and play. And he didn't play in a normal environment where you've got a big lead, maybe you're beating an opponent. [Against Texas] he went in against a top defense in the country in one of the biggest games of the season and performed well for a guy that had not gotten a lot of reps with the ones.' He got a full spring's worth of reps as the starter in the offseason and enters 2025 as the undisputed No. 1 QB. 'I think going through spring was a big deal and just having that time because it was about a month straight of work and practice, just getting a lot of banked reps,' Stockton said. 'And having this offseason, throwing 7-on-7 and working out almost every day and spending a lot of time together has helped a lot.' Non-QB to watch WR Zachariah Branch Beck's struggles in 2024 after a breakout 2023 season drew a lot of headlines. But there were multiple reasons for his increase in interceptions as Georgia searched for reliable targets after the departures of Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey to the NFL. Dominic Lovett was Georgia's leading receiver but he averaged just over 10 yards a catch. Arian Smith was the team's deep threat, but he was inconsistent. Running back Trevor Etienne had the fourth-most catches on the team and he averaged just 6 yards a reception. Georgia and Smart made the receiving group a priority in the transfer portal. Branch arrives from USC along with Texas A&M wide receiver Noah Thomas. Former Miami wide receiver Colbie Young will be in his second season at Georgia. Branch can be a game-breaker, though Georgia needs to figure out how to use him better than USC did at times. Branch had six catches for 98 yards against Michigan and six grabs for 102 yards against Washington. He also had three catches for 10 yards against Minnesota, two for 6 yards against Penn State and two for 13 yards against UCLA. Best position group Defensive backs Georgia's defense took a bit of a step back in 2024. Opposing teams averaged over 5 yards a play for the first time since 2016 and opposing QBs completed 59% of their passes for 200 yards a game. Even though the secondary loses Malaki Starks and Dan Jackson, it has the potential to be better in 2025. Daylen Everette returns at cornerback and KJ Bolden can be the next star Georgia safety. He had 59 tackles as a freshman in 2024. The defense also added safety Zion Branch — Zachariah's brother — from USC, Miami's Jaden Harris and former UAB safety Adrian Maddox. There's a lot of depth here. It's next man up like it typically is at Georgia across every defensive unit, and the secondary could be the best of the bunch. Biggest game Nov. 15 vs. Texas Georgia gets to live the good side of the SEC's schedule rotation this season. After the conference expanded to 16 teams in 2024, the Bulldogs drew road games against Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas. Now all three of those teams come to Athens, while Georgia visits Tennessee, Auburn and Mississippi State. Those are the only three true road games Georgia plays all season. The trip to Starkville will be the Bulldogs' longest of the regular season. We could pick from any of those three big home games, but we'll go with Texas. It's the final conference game of the season for the Bulldogs. Georgia may need a win to get into the SEC title game while everyone else in the league sweats out another conference game or two before December. Why Georgia is No. 5 This is where years and years of recruiting prowess pay off. Georgia may not have a bunch of players on this year's team who casual fans know about. But there's a ton of talent across the roster and it's all but certain that stars will emerge over the course of the season. At SEC media days, Smart noted that over half his roster was entering their first or second year at Georgia. The offense should be much more like it was in 2023 than 2024. Georgia averaged 92 fewer yards per game a season ago and 1.3 fewer yards per play compared to 2023. And it wasn't just the passing game that suffered, either. Injuries in the running back room took a toll as freshman Nate Frazier ended up as the team's leading rusher. He's back, and there are four new starters on the offensive line. Despite the new faces up front, the run game should improve. Stockton should also shine at quarterback. With more playmakers on offense, he can play the role of distributor. It felt like Beck needed to force things too often in 2024. A favorable schedule should put the Bulldogs in prime position for yet another SEC title.

College football Top 25: No. 6 Ohio State aims to go back-to-back with a new QB and a revamped defense

The Buckeyes never fell out of the top five of the AP poll all season but lost 32-31 at Oregon and — far more importantly — lost 13-10 at home to Michigan in the final week of the regular season. That rivalry loss seemed to expose the flaws in Ohio State's offense and pushed the Buckeyes out of the Big Ten title game. It also dropped Ryan Day to 1-4 against Michigan after a fourth straight defeat to the Wolverines. And by the way, it was the biggest upset in the history of the rivalry; Ohio State was a 20.5-point favorite. But the sentiments of the season changed once the College Football Playoff began. Ohio State handily beat Tennessee, blew out Oregon, beat Texas and then comfortably handled Notre Dame for the school's first national title since the 2014 season. The quarterback Julian Sayin The former Alabama signee should step in for Will Howard after spending the 2024 season as the No. 3 QB behind Will Howard and Devin Brown. Howard is now with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Brown, who appeared in nine games, is at Cal. Sayin hasn't officially won the QB competition just yet. He's competing with Lincoln Kienholz for the starting job, but we think Sayin will be the one taking the first snap of the season against Texas on Aug. 30. 'They've been throwing with the wide receivers,' Day said of both quarterbacks at Big Ten media day. 'I ask those guys all the time and they like both of them. We're going to put them in as many competitive situations as we possibly can to figure out who handles that the best. 'We've got to be on-point Week 1. We can't be messing around. I know that we'll need all of those guys in that room this year. When you look at Will, he was a guy who was an older guy, who was experienced, and he was able to sustain the entire season. That's not always the way it is.' Howard's addition to the QB room ahead of the 2024 season was telling. It was a clear sign that Day and the coaching staff weren't comfortable with the young options they had after Kyle McCord transferred at the end of the 2023 season and no one impressed in the bowl game in McCord's absence. Ohio State made no such move ahead of the 2025 season. Sayin transferred to Ohio State in January of 2024 after Nick Saban's retirement. The former five-star recruit was the No. 2 QB in the country and the top prospect in the state of California when he signed with the Crimson Tide. Non-QB to watch RB CJ Donaldson The former West Virginia running back arrives after rushing for more than 700 yards in each of the last two seasons with the Mountaineers. He had 171 carries for 798 yards and 11 scores in 2023 and backed that performance up with 163 carries for 734 yards and 11 TDs in 2024. Donaldson will likely share duties with James Peoples and others in the Ohio State backfield. You have to go back to J.K. Dobbins in 2019 — Day's first season as head coach — to find an Ohio State running back with more than 200 carries in a single season. And last year's timeshare worked out pretty well. Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson each rushed for over 1,000 yards and were second-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Best position group Wide receiver We had to mention Jeremiah Smith sooner rather than later. The top non-QB favorite for the Heisman Trophy is the best wide receiver in college football. He was fantastic as a freshman in 2024 with 76 catches for 1,315 yards and 15 TDs. He can easily improve on those numbers in 2025. Emeka Egbuka is gone but this is a receiver group that simply reloads year after year. Carnell Tate had 52 catches for 733 yards in 2024 and Brandon Inniss could step into a bigger role. True freshman Quincy Porter could also play a big role right away. The five-star recruit was the No. 3 receiver in the country when he signed with the Buckeyes and Ohio State also added three other four-star wide receivers in the class of 2025. Tight end Max Klare isn't officially a wide receiver, but he could end up being Sayin's No. 2 target by the end of the season. The Purdue transfer had 51 catches for 685 yards and four scores in 2024. No other Purdue player had more than 25 catches last season as the Boilermakers scuffled to 1-11. Biggest game Nov. 29 at Michigan It can't be any other game at this point, right? The Week 1 showdown with Texas is huge. An Oct. 11 game at Illinois is intriguing given the Illini's returning talent and its playoff hopes. And Penn State's visit on Nov. 1 will be a massive contest. But Day's four-game losing streak against the Wolverines makes this road game the most important. The national title solidified his status as Ohio State's coach for the foreseeable future. But you don't need Ohio State fans to tell you how vital it is to beat Michigan. The Buckeyes had beaten Michigan eight straight times before the Wolverines won in 2021. A fifth win in a row for the Wolverines would tie Michigan's longest win streak in the series since UM won six straight games from 1922 through 1927. Why Ohio State is No. 6 The offense should still be very good no matter who wins the starting quarterback competition. Ohio State has averaged at least 30 points and six yards per play in every season of Day's tenure. The transition from Chip Kelly to Brian Hartline at offensive coordinator should be smooth. The biggest questions come on defense, where the unit will be led by a new coordinator and needs to replace a ton of talent. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles left to take the same position at Penn State — where he's the highest-paid defensive assistant in college football — and former Lions head coach Matt Patricia is the new coordinator. It's Patricia's first job in college football since he was a graduate assistant at Syracuse from 2001 to 2003. All-American defensive back Caleb Downs and linebacker Sonny Styles are back on that side of the ball, but the only other returning starter is Davison Igbinosun. Can Texas exploit all the turnover in Week 1? That defensive transition is a big reason why we think Ohio State could miss the Big Ten title game for a second season in a row. The Buckeyes should still be a playoff team and will be favored at home against the Nittany Lions. But a new quarterback and so many new faces on the defensive side of the ball have us in wait-and-see mode regarding OSU's chances of going back-to-back.
