Abang Johari elected new Perkim president, vows to strengthen Muslim welfare, economy
According to the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Abang Johari expressed confidence that, with the support of Perkim's new leadership, he would be able to continue the legacy of his predecessor, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Speaking at a press conference following the leadership handover, Abang Johari highlighted the potential of waqf (endowment) assets to serve as a catalyst for the Muslim economy if managed systematically and in accordance with syariah principles.
He emphasised that the Islamic concept of welfare should go beyond short-term aid, focusing instead on the strategic management of waqf assets to generate sustainable, 'berkat' (divinely blessed) income for the long term.
'If we look at the Muslim community in Malaysia, they have assets. These waqf assets must be managed well according to Islamic syariah because they can provide great economic returns to the Muslim community,' said Abang Johari.
To this end, he plans to hold discussions with Perkim leadership to develop a comprehensive strategy for managing both the community's assets and welfare holistically.
Abang Johari also underscored the importance of strengthening technical education among Muslim youth to prepare them for participation in the modern economy.
'In Sarawak, we have developed various aspects of technical education for Muslim children. I want this training policy to be discussed at the national level to be in line with the current economic needs,' he said.
Also present were Dr Mahathir, federal Deputy Minister of Economy Dato Hanifah Hajar Taib and other dignitaries.

Celebrating Tok Nan: Gallery preserving former CM's legacy officially launched
(From left) Hang Tuah, Azizul, Abdul Karim, and Maulana engage in a discussion during the tour inside the gallery. — Photo from Sarawak Public Communications Unit BINTULU (Aug 13): The Tok Nan Gallery, which is dedicated to celebrating the life, vision and values of the former chief minister, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, was officially launched yesterday. Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this marked another step in preserving the legacy of one of Sarawak's most beloved leaders. 'The gallery stands as a reflection of Tok Nan's aspirations for Sarawak, especially his dedication to unity, cultural harmony and inclusivity,' he said in a press conference after the opening ceremony at Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS). Abdul Karim expressed his gratitude, on behalf of the Sarawak government, to UPMS for initiating the idea of the Tok Nan Gallery, which has existed in its current form since 2019. 'From this gallery, we can expand and share the perspectives, interests and hopes that the late Tok Nan held during his lifetime. The state government has channelled RM2.5 million to support programmes, activities and research, including scholarships for students pursuing Master's and PhD studies under the Tok Nan Chair,' he said. He said these efforts were part of continuing Tok Nan's vision, especially his commitment to strengthening racial unity in Sarawak. 'We know Tok Nan had no bias towards any ethnic group and everyone liked him. Even though his tenure as chief minister was only two years and eight months, the impact he left was profound – not only on Sarawak, but also on the leadership that succeeded him in uniting the state's multiracial and multi-religious communities,' he said. Abdul Karim hoped UPMS would continue conducting deeper research into Tok Nan's ideas and vision for Sarawak. 'He wanted to see Sarawak's culture, arts and unity flourish. This is what we must continue,' he stressed. The late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, affectionately known as Tok Nan, served as the fifth chief minister of Sarawak from March 2014 until his passing in January 2017. Despite his short tenure, he was widely admired for his people-oriented policies, straightforward leadership style, and strong advocacy for Sarawak's rights within Malaysia. The Tok Nan Gallery houses exhibits, photographs, and memorabilia chronicling his life, career, and contributions. It serves both as an educational resource and as a symbol of the values he championed, integrity, inclusiveness, and development for all Sarawakians. Also present were UPMS deputy vice-chancellor (industry and community relations) Prof Dr BT Hang Tuah Baharudin, Tanjung Datu assemblyman and Tok Nan's son Azizul Annuar Adenan, and Tok Nan Chair chairman Assoc Prof Dr Mohamad Maulana Magiman.

Shared growth: (From left) Morocco First Counsellor Mohamed-Ali El Kourmir, Libya Counsellor Ibrahim Ahmed Ibrahim, Palestine Ambassador Walid Abu Ali, Matrade board member Mohammad Medan Abdullah, Reezal Merican, Abu Bakar, Kazahkstan First Secretary Amir Aldazhanov and Czech Republic Ambassador Juraj Koudelka at the Mihas Foreign Mission Networking Hi-Tea. — YAP CHEE HONG/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: After setting a Guinness World Record last year for attracting 43,000 trade visitors, the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) is aiming to draw more than 45,000 participants from over 45 countries this year. Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said Mihas 2025 will feature more than 2,300 booths across 14 industry clusters. 'These 14 clusters include education, Muslim-friendly hospitality and tourism, food technology and packaging, pharmaceutical and medical, franchise, Islamic art and crafts, and logistics. 'Mihas has continuously increased participation and footfall, which reflects the support from international partners,' he said during the Mihas foreign mission networking hi-tea at the Matrade exhibition hall yesterday. Reezal Merican said the achievement had helped them lead Mihas internationally. He said Matrade had launched Mihas in Dubai last year and would expand it to Shanghai this year. 'Hopefully next year, we will organise Mihas in the European region, where Malaysian halal businesses can showcase their businesses internationally. 'The global halal market is currently worth over US$3.5 trillion (RM14.8 trillion). It is expected to reach US$5 trillion (RM21.2 trillion) by 2030,' he added. Matrade deputy chief executive officer Abu Bakar Yusof said Mihas 2025 will feature a special Asean and Gulf Cooperation Council pavilion. 'The six GCC member states are experiencing rapid growth, making it timely for Malaysia to explore ways to contribute and create better market opportunities for businesses from both regions. 'Malaysia has sustained a strong position with more than 200 partners, and we are moving up in the ranks of trade globally,' he said. Abu Bakar also urged foreign traders to utilise the new Madani Digital Trade platform, an artificial intelligence-based system that helps match Malaysian halal exporters, especially small medium enterprises with international buyers to support genuine cross-border deals. Meanwhile, Matrade director of halal, food and beverage and agro-based section Yusram Yusof said Malaysia has led the overall global Islamic economy indicator ranking for 11 consecutive years in the halal industry. 'The halal industry stands in the top 10 among other industries, contributing RM161bil to this year's gross domestic product,' he said. Last year, Malaysia's halal exports were valued at RM61.8bil, marking a 15% increase from the previous year. 'The sector supports more than 350,000 jobs nationwide and is anchored by 14 halal parks, which have attracted RM3.8bil in investments and are home to over 300 companies. He also said Malaysia has come up with a comprehensive halal ecosystem. 'If there are good strategies in place, we can meet the target set by our Prime Minister to achieve RM80bil halal export,' he added. Recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan, said Malaysia hoped to achieve RM80bil halal export. Mihas 2025, themed 'Pinnacle of Halal Excellence', will be held from Sept 17 to 20 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre.

Malaysia launches world's first syariah-compliant AI app
KUALA LUMPUR: The launch of NurAI, the world's first syariah-compliant application, is a technological solution to address factual inaccuracies related to Islamic fatwas and rulings that are often conveyed through artificial intelligence (AI) content on Western platforms. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic)said NurAI, which is based on the Large Language Model concept and developed entirely based on Islamic values, not only processes language but also understands manners, preserves the law and upholds the cultural dignity of Muslims. Ahmad Zahid, who officiated the launch, also said the application took into account that most AI systems are developed in the West 'but the values and priorities they bring are not necessarily in line with our way of life and aspirations,' Bernama reported. 'In fact, there are studies that have found that there are AI content related to Islam on Western platforms that contain bias or factual inaccuracies, thus presenting a negative image of our religion and culture. 'We have witnessed how AI systems give answers that contradict syariah principles when asked about Islamic financial law or quote unauthentic sources when discussing aqidah issues. This is a gap that we must close and InsyaAllah, I am confident that NurAI can do it,' he said. Ahmad Zahid added that this shift is not only a symbol of innovation, but also serves as an instrument of technological diplomacy in positioning Malaysia as a leader in syariah-compliant AI. 'It also opens the door to strategic cooperation with Asean countries and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, thus strengthening Malaysia's influence on the international stage. 'Make this platform the basis for shaping the thinking of the community, answering questions about halal and haram, providing guidance on zakat and faraid, providing syariah-compliant investment advice openly and ultimately guiding the community based on true and recognised Islamic disciplines,' he said. Ahmad Zahid hoped that the launch of NurAI would mark the start of a major movement involving the entire national ecosystem.
