MP's nine-month celebration of an 18th-century queen: The importance of Ahilyabai Holkar
THE 18TH-CENTURY Maratha queen Devi Ahilyabai Holkar is seeing a revival in Madhya Pradesh, with the Mohan Yadav-led BJP government orchestrating one of the most comprehensive state-led cultural commemorations in recent memory, in the run-up to her 300th birth anniversary celebrations later this month.
The culmination, on May 31, will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurate the Indore Metro Rail's first phase, along with Datia and Satna airports, as well as give an address to a 'Women Empowerment Grand Conference' in Bhopal. Over two lakh women are expected to attend, including Self Help Group (SHG) members, Ladli Behna scheme beneficiaries, and entrepreneurs.
The Madhya Pradesh campaign — spanning nine months since September 2024, multiple cities, and political, academic and developmental initiatives – has elevated Ahilyabai from a historically revered figure to the centerpiece of politics in Madhya Pradesh. It helps that Ahilyabai, apart from her administrative genius, is a cultural symbol with much resonance for her contribution towards restoration of many temples.
As part of the celebrations, Madhya Pradesh has held folk and dance performances; art exhibitions; theatrical dramas across cities like Maheshwar, Chitrakoot, Indore, Ujjain, Omkareshwar, and Orchha on Ahilyabai; sanctioned a state-sponsored film on her life and a commemorative book; exhibitions of 234 watercolor paintings of temples she restored (including the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi), and a light-and-sound show in her name. Alongside this, the Marathi Sahitya Academy is translating documents related to Ahilyabai and planning her statues along the Narmada Parikrama route.
At a recent Cabinet meeting, held at Ahilyabai's Rajwada Palace in Indore, Yadav approved Rs 3,876 crore worth of development projects related to the campaign, and sanctioned a youth training programme named after her to provide interest subsidies on loans. A Women Start-Up Policy is in the works, with female artisans and entrepreneurs being prominently showcased at exhibitions on Ahilyabai.
CM takes the lead
Mohan Yadav has taken personal ownership of the campaign around Ahilyabai, linking her story to the development work and women's empowerment schemes of his own government. Ahilyabai's place in the Hindutva pantheon is an additional bonus for the first-time CM, who is seeking to consolidate his position in the state's politics.
His selection as CM ahead of other leaders after long-time CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan was moved to the Centre as Union minister had come as a surprise.
Deepak Tiwari, the former Vice Chancellor of Makhanlal Chaturvedi University and an author on Madhya Pradesh's political history, pointed out that Ahilyabai's renovation of Shiva temples across India makes her a figure with lasting cultural resonance.
While other CMs have highlighted religious and historical figures, Tiwari noted, it was the first time that events were being planned at this scale. 'This type of politics did not happen in the past. The first time sadhus entered the political scene was with Uma Bharti in 2003. But the celebration of a religious icon at this level on the government level never took place before' he said.
Tiwari also pointed out that Mohan Yadav is the first Madhya Pradesh CM who is himself in-charge of Indore district. 'Indore is the commercial and financial capital of the state. He is treating Indore like he treats Ujjain (his home base).' The decision to hold the Cabinet meeting at Rajwada Palace, from Ahilyabai's seat of power, was deliberate, Tiwari said.
Indore, incidentally, is the turf of BJP heavyweight and Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, who was considered a probable CM face before the BJP picked Yadav.
At a recent event, Mohan Yadav also linked Ahilyabai's temple-restoration legacy to resistance against the Mughals. 'The Mughals launched a campaign to destroy our devasthans. I have no hesitation saying that barring Ahilyabai Holkar, the big rulers did not pay attention to this issue,' he said.
This links with the BJP narrative of praising 'homegrown' princely states for upholding India's cultural history.
BJP leaders in the state counter the contention that the celebration of Ahilyabai is aimed at scoring political points. Senior BJP leader and Indore (Rural) District President Ghanshyam Naroliya said the events were just an extension of Yadav's women-centric governance.
Naroliya said, 'The celebrations will continue under all BJP-ruled states. We want to take her story to pan-India level.'
A senior RSS leader from Indore said, 'It is unfair to say Devi Ahilyabai is used by the BJP and RSS for political points. The Sangh is celebrating her social and religious contribution, her governance model. We want society to know about all of this. We celebrate national heroes like Dr Ambedkar, Vivekananda, and the 1857 rebellion. The Sangh commemorated all of these important historical events. Why should the whole country not know about Ahilyabai? She was not just a queen based in Indore.'

Police may relocate BJP leader over hate speech
The police in Dakshina Kannada district have initiated legal proceedings to extern BJP leader and Puthila Parivara head Arun Kumar Puthila, citing concerns over law and order in the region. A formal notice has been issued directing him to appear before officials for a hearing on June 6, failing which an ex parte order may be passed. The externment proceedings are being pursued under Section 55 of the Karnataka Police Act, which allows for removal of individuals considered a threat to public order. According to an official, the authorities are considering relocating Puthila to Shahabad police station limits in Kalaburagi district. The notice, issued by the Puttur assistant commissioner, also stated that Puthila may appear in person or through legal representation. The decision has been taken based on his history of giving inflammatory speeches. According to the official, the decision follows recent incidents of communal violence and a review of multiple murder cases over the past decade, where several accused were reportedly found to be affiliated with radical organisations. 'We have identified and are closely monitoring the movements and activities of the leaders of such organisations. Directions have been issued to verify all such groups, and preventive measures will continue,' said Arun Kumar, superintendent of police. Kumar added that the police were acting within their mandate to maintain peace. 'It is the responsibility of the police to take preventive action, and legal steps will be taken against those who oppose these efforts. We will continue to implement such measures until law and order is fully restored.' In connection with ongoing preventive actions, the police also registered an FIR on June 2 against senior RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, who allegedly delivered a provocative speech on May 12 during a condolence meeting for slain Hindutva activist and rowdy-sheeter Suhas Shetty. The event took place at Madwa Palace Convention Hall in Kavalapadur village under Bantwal Rural Police Station limits. Police allege Bhat's remarks were inflammatory and could incite communal tension. A case has been booked under relevant sections of the BNS. The Dakshina Kannada district police, in coordination with the district administration, has identified 36 people for externment from the district limits following their repeated involvement in communal offences and activities that threaten public peace and order. The police crackdown has triggered protests from various groups, including demonstrations outside the Kadaba police station, where activists opposed background verifications being conducted on leaders of several organisations. In response to the developments, BJP state president BY Vijayendra issued a sharp rebuke of the Congress-led government, accusing it of using the police force to target Hindu leaders in a bid to appease the Muslim community for electoral purposes. 'In the coastal region, Hindu leaders and BJP are going out to intimidate Hindu activists to remind people of it again,' Vijayendra said, alleging that the state was showing leniency towards 'anti-social elements' while aggressively pursuing action against leaders of Hindu outfits. He also criticised the government's alleged role in the swift transfer of top police officers in Mangaluru following the murder of a Muslim truck driver. 'A conspiracy is underway to file false cases against the leaders of the Hindu community and throw them in jail,' he said. Terming the externment proceedings and FIRs as 'shameful moves to suppress freedom of expression,' Vijayendra demanded immediate withdrawal of the cases. 'The FIR registered against more than 15 leaders of Hindu organizations, including Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, should be immediately cancelled and the deportation order withdrawn, otherwise the government itself will have to be responsible for the further consequences,' he warned. In response, home minister G Parameshwara said: 'Whether Hindu or Muslim, action will be taken only if someone breaks the law. No one will be spared if they do something wrong.'

Shankar and BJP leaders of the joint Karimnagar district, garlanded the portraits of Bharat Mata and Ambedkar and unfurled the national flag.

Union Ministers, MPs must safeguard state's interests: DKS
Bengaluru: In view of Maharashtra CM raising objection to increasing height of Alamatti dam, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday called upon the Union Ministers and MPs from Karnataka to safeguard state's interests. 'As per the Krishna Tribunal's order, Karnataka can increase the height of Alamatti dam to 524 meters. Maharashtra, which was quiet when the order was pronounced, has suddenly written a letter to our CM objecting to it. I appeal to all the Union Ministers and MPs with folded hands to protect state's interest in this,' the DCM, who also handles Irrigation portfolio, said addressing a press conference at Vidhana Soudha. 'Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has written a letter to our CM Siddaramaiah on May 9 raising objection to increasing the height of Alamatti dam. Stating that Sangli and Kolhapur districts would face flooding if the height of the dam is raised, the letter has asked for re-evaluating the plan. This letter is a shock to us. Maharashtra had never raised objection to this project till now. They had not raised any issues when the Tribunal passed its judgement in 2010. Maharashtra had even submitted an affidavit to the Tribunal seeking increasing Alamatti height but it is opposing it all of a sudden. 'This project is our right accorded by the Krishna Tribunal. Our CM will give a reply to the letter by the Maharashtra CM. Union Minister V Somanna is part of Union Jal Shakthi ministry. Alamatti project is needed for the state, we don't want friction with our neighbouring state. The cost escalation is very due to delay in this project. We would need Rs 1 lakh crore for land acquisition for this project,' he said. 'Flooding in Maharashtra is their internal matter and they need to fix it. We will meet the PM and the Union Jal Shakthi Minister and put pressure regarding this. Karnataka has been waiting for a Gazette notification for increasing Alamatti height since 2013. How long should we wait? We will share the letter from Maharashtra CM and our reply to that to all our MPs.' Asked if Maharashtra CM's letter has a political motive, he said, 'I don't want to get into that now, I will only speak for our state's interest. There is no scientific basis for the letter. Increasing Alamatti dam is our right and we appeal to all parties concerned to let us execute the project.'
