Joey Porter Sr. wants Steelers coaching job again — but won't force anything

USA Today24-06-2025
Steelers legendary OLB Joey Porter Sr.'s passion for coaching is still red hot.
On a recent episode of the Not Just Football with Cam Heyward podcast, Porter reiterated his desire to return to coaching while discussing what it's been like watching his son, Joey Porter Jr., from the stands:
'Until they give me a suite, I said I got to sit in the stands, 'cause I want to be the full fan,' Porter said. 'I sat in Penn State for four years, sitting in the stands. I ain't about to try and use my Steeler power of being on the sideline — 'cause it's giving mixed emotions. I know how much I really do want to coach. I'm not trying to sit down there looking like I'm trying to ask for my job back — knowing I would take it back — but you don't want to come off like that. And I want [Porter Jr.] to be a man and do his thing.'
Porter Sr. served as the Steelers' defensive assistant in 2014 and the team's outside linebackers coach from 2015 to 2018 — until HC Mike Tomlin informed him they wouldn't renew his contract.
While the current Steelers OLB coaching spot is filled by Denzel Martin, offering Porter another defensive assistant role could be the perfect proving ground for the Pittsburgh legend.

Watch: Notre Dame's new starting quarterback CJ Carr's high school highlight reel

While we haven't seen much of Notre Dame football's new starting quarterback CJ Carr at this level, we can go back and look at what he did in high school. Coming out of Saline High School in Michigan, Carr was a nationally ranked prospect as the No. 68 overall recruit in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports Composite. Sure, we saw him during the past two years of Blue and Gold games, but those are set up for success for the quarterbacks. During his final season of high school, Carr would throw for 2,754 yards with 24 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, while running for 91 yards, but accounting for 9 other scores. Over his three years starting, he threw for a total of 8,135 yards with 78 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, while accounting for 312 yards rushing and 16 scores. Those are very impressive numbers from Carr, and hopefully he can replicate that success with the Irish. Check out below his senior year highlights, for a glimpse of what is to come when Notre Dame takes the field on the road against Miami at the end of the month. Steelers' Cam Heyward apologizes to Aaron Rodgers over past controversial comments

Aaron Rodgers has more than earned the respect and admiration of his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates, but it didn't start off that way, and Cam Heyward recently apologized for some comments he made early in the offseason. On Tuesday, Rodgers and DK Metcalf made special guest appearances on the Not Just Football with Cam Heyward podcast, and the Steelers defensive tackle wasted little time addressing the months-old controversy — specifically about whether the 20-year veteran QB really wanted to play in Pittsburgh. "I have to apologize," Heyward told Rodgers. "I guess my words were taken out of context when I said, 'Do you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or not?'" Rodgers admitted to being hurt but understood that Heyward didn't necessarily know who he really was at the time of the negotiating process. The veteran Steelers defender admitted his opinion has changed since. Before Rodgers signed, Steelers safety DeShon Elliott also fired a jab at the four-time MVP — claiming on social media that he should "leave his a-- at the retirement home." Both Heyward's and Elliott's comments stirred up controversy when first made, leading some Steelers fans to believe Rodgers might not sign at all. That's been the overarching theme of Rodgers' career over the past few years — many within the NFL world jumping to criticize, only to walk back their original stance on the veteran quarterback. Steelers' Jalen Ramsey snubbed off Fox Sports' top-10 CB list

The Pittsburgh Steelers disrespect tour apparently kicked off early this season — as Fox Sports recently snubbed All-Pro CB Jalen Ramsey from their top-10 cornerbacks list. On Tuesday, Fox Sports posted their top-10 cornerbacks for the 2025 season on social media — omitting Ramsey altogether and instead placing him in the "honorable mentions" section. Denver Broncos, Pat Surtain II Houston Texans, Derek Stingley Jr. New York Jets, Sauce Gardner Kansas City Chiefs, Trent McDuffie New England Patriots, Christian Gonzalez Baltimore Ravens, Marlon Humphrey Cleveland Browns, Denzel Ward Seattle Seahawks, Devon Witherspoon Chicago Bears, Jaylon Johnson San Francisco 49ers, Deommodore Lenoir Honorable mentions: Philadelphia Eagles, Quinyon Mitchell Carolina Panthers, Jaycee Horn Pittsburgh Steelers, Jalen Ramsey Fox Sports' list is filled with young, talented cornerbacks — but the "Ramsey-is-declining" false narrative shouldn't be enough to keep him from cracking the top 10. Ramsey clearly has some doubters to prove wrong this upcoming season, playing on arguably the greatest defense he's ever been a part of — one that HC Mike Tomlin believes will make history.
