HAWKESBURY INSIDE MAIL
MALBORK CASTLE (1) is a son of trainer Richard Litt's former Group 1 gun Castelvecchio and is coming off a confidence boosting success last start. The three-year-old relished the step up to 1800m at Hawkesbury and should be well-suited at the same venue over 2200m. He can make it two on the spin here. TWILIGHT ELEGANCE (4) has mixed her form this preparation, breaking her maiden first-up over 1400m at Kembla before failing to fire over the Wyong mile. She's from the same family as former star Miss Finland so should appreciate the step up in trip. Her stablemate MAIRE DE PARIS (6) wasn't far off Malbork Castle last time. She can run well.
BET: MALBORK CASTLE to win.
WILD THOUGHTS (4) was scratched from Saturday's meeting on his home track at Kembla Grange to line up here. He's only had the one start to date but looks set to have a decent future. The son of So You Think wasn't far off subsequent stakes performer Modella in that debut over 1300m back on January 29. COLD BREW (1) has been runner-up in four of his five starts to date. He seems to still be putting it all together but a maiden victory isn't far away. MOCHIMA (7) and SISTER'S RUN (8) have both trialled up fairly ahead of their respective debuts.
BET: WILD THOUGHTS to win.
RACE 3: SUPER MAIDEN PLATE (1500m)
LE CHOCOLAT (4) is somewhat surprisingly still a maiden heading into the final weeks of his four-year-old season. The Chris Waller-trained galloper returns from a 38-week break with a couple of quiet trials typical of the stable. He finds himself in a winnable race here and a win might just be the confidence boost he needs to go on with it. THE BEAST (6) continues to knock at the door with seven placings in nine starts. He should settle on speed and be in this race a long way. JAMARNI (3) is racing consistently this time while Devoted To You in the unknown quantity.
BET: LE CHOCOLAT to win, quinella 4,6.
MISS JUDAS (5) has had her fair share of chances to break her maiden and gets another golden opportunity here. A placegetter in five of her 11 starts, the daughter of Microphone produced a tidy trial victory in the lead-up to her first-up assignment. 1000m looks to be the perfect kick-off point. EFHARISTO (2) hasn't been seen at the races for 83 weeks when she was runner-up to Erno's Cube in the 2023 Max Lees Classic. If she can recapture that form, she wins this but you have to take her on trust. ZING TO ME (9) had excuses first-up and is capable of bouncing back in a winnable race.
BET: MISS JUDAS to win.
THE GREY (4) looks as his name suggests and is trained on course with Brad Widdup. He finds this race third-up and should be ready to peak after battling on for third at the same track and trip last time. Widdup has added the blinkers again to keep his mind of the job. Father-son team Rob and Luke Price have two chances in ALL MACHIAVELLIAN (3) and MR ROCK IT (1) can both have claims. The former is the clear class runner if he brings his A-game while the latter has been racing well without winning this time in. DESI EMPEROR (6) keeps running into one better but it's hard to knock his consistency.
BET: THE GREY to win. Boxed trifecta 1,3,4,6.
AUDREY'S LANE (2) finds herself in the most competitive race on the program. The Brad Widdup-trained mare is first-up from 35-week break with a couple of trials under her belt. She's performed well fresh before and has loves the 1300m with two wins in a placing in three starts at the trip already. The firm track should be to TRUE AMOR's (7) liking. He looked like his wheels were spinning on rain-affected going in town but should get firmer footing here in easier grade. The blinkers go on. CALIFORNIA SECRET (1) has won his past two starts and gets in well considering after Braith Nock's 1.5kg claim.
BET: AUDREY'S LANE each-way.
TOMBA (3) was a complete forgive first-up at Newcastle when he didn't go a yard on heavy ground. The market said it all – drifting from $3.70 to $5.50 in betting – before only beating a runner home. Back on good ground here, he can bounce back in a big way over a 1500m trip he's won over before. KYEEMA (1) was scratched from Wednesday's Randwick Kensington meeting to target this race. The ex-Hong Kong galloper will take plenty out of his Kenso victory last time and a repeat of that performance undoubtedly has him right in this too. HEAVEN BOUND (6) strips fitter while CRIMSON MISS (9) is lightly-raced with her best in front of her.

‘George was seeing her': Promise ring key to secret lover estate claims

EXCLUSIVE A promise ring is set to prove vital in a 'heated' dispute between the 'two lovers' of a prominent Aussie football figure and his multimillion-dollar estate, a court has heard. Athens woman Angela Bardi and Kelly Giannaros faced the NSW Supreme Court last week over the inheritance of former Sydney Olympic FC President George Giannaros, who died of cancer at age 55 in 2023. Ms Giannaros, who was married to Mr Giannaros for 28 years, told the court she had no knowledge of her husband's lover until just before his funeral, when she was told by one of his friends: 'A woman from Greece called Angela is over here, George was seeing her in Greece during his solo trips over there.' Ms Bardi, who was 16 years younger than Mr Giannaros, claims she had a 'romantic and sexual relationship' with the former football boss from September 2018 up until his death. She claims she meets the criteria of a 'de facto partner' as Mr Giannaros stayed with her during his trips to Greece and spoke about a future life together. In proving her eligibility, she also told the court Mr Giannaros gifted her a 'promise ring' in 2021. Last week in the Supreme Court, Ms Giannaros sought $75,000 as security for legal costs from Ms Bardi. She also applied to prevent Ms Bardi from having access to bank statements from Mr Giannaros' corporate entities on the basis that her claim to the estate was weak. NSW Supreme Court Judge Michael Meek dismissed both of Ms Giannaros' claims, stating they were not 'realistic or appropriate'. Judge Meek said he rejected Ms Giannaros' claims that Ms Bardi's prospects were weak, noting that even if she does not prove she was de facto, she may be able to prove she was a dependant of Mr Giannaros. 'I consider, at least on the basis of dependent household member eligibility, Angela has reasonable to good prospects of success,' Judge Meek said. In his judgment handed down on Friday, Judge Meek outlined how Mr Giannaros lived a 'colourful' but 'hard living' life characterised by 'drinking, smoking and drug abuse (including cocaine)'. The court heard how Ms Giannaros asserts she had a 'close and loving relationship' from 2018 up until his death and had a 'plethora of photos, WhatsApp messages and texts' to support the claims. 'Kelly contends that her and the deceased did not at any relevant time discuss ending their marriage, separating or divorcing,' the court decision states. Ms Giannaros, whom he married in 1995, was the sole beneficiary of his estate, with the total sum currently in debate. Ms Giannaros claims the estate is worth approximately $5.5 million which Ms Bardi claims the inheritance is between $12.7 million and $13.7 million. Ms Bardi told the court she met Mr Giannaros through a mutual friend in 2018. The court heard how Mr Giannaros transferred approximately $337,770 to Ms Bardi over the last three years of his life, which is not in dispute. The case will return to the NSW Supreme Court for directions on August 28.

NZ welcome back midfielder Thomas for Socceroos clash

After six injury-blighted years in Dutch club soccer, midfielder Ryan Thomas is set to make his long-awaited New Zealand return in a pair of friendlies against Australia next month to the delight of All Whites coach Darren Bazeley. Thomas, whose last international appearance was a friendly against Ireland in late 2019, was named in Bazeley's squad for the trans-Tasman clashes on Tuesday. The 30-year-old's return comes after a rare period of fitness that has seen him start again for PEC Zwolle in the Dutch top tier. Having the 19-cap All White fit and firing would be a major boost for New Zealand ahead of their return to the World Cup at the 2026 finals in North America. "It's like a new signing, almost, which we don't get, obviously, because we're not a club team," Bazeley told New Zealand media on Tuesday. "Having somebody of the calibre and quality of Ryan coming back into the team is great." Hailing from Te Puke, a small town renowned in New Zealand for its kiwifruit, Thomas made his professional debut for PEC Zwolle as a 19-year-old winger before reinventing himself as a holding midfielder. A move to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in 2018 was hailed in New Zealand as one of the biggest signings in its football history. It all went sour within days, though, as Thomas ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament at training and spent the next few seasons battling a succession of knee problems until his release from PSV in 2022. He returned to his first club but the injuries continued at PEC Zwolle, with another round of knee surgery wiping out much of 2024. Amid his struggles, Thomas opted out of playing for international football but was among the first to congratulate captain Chris Wood when the All Whites sealed their 2026 World Cup qualification in March. Bazeley has been patient with Thomas, saying he would keep the door open as long as he could before the global showpiece in the United States, Canada and Mexico. But he was pleasantly surprised the midfielder had made himself available for the September 5 and September 9 matches against Australia, having hoped he might return for away fixtures against Poland and Norway in October. "He was like, 'Man, I've never played against Australia and I really want to play against them.' So yeah, he's in, which is great," said Bazeley. New Zealand skipper Wood, who scored a double in Nottingham Forest's Premier League opener against Brentford, was also included in Bazeley's squad for the "Soccer Ashes" inspired by the cricket contest between Australia and England.

Taylor Duryea has announced his retirement

The list of active Hawthorn premiership players is down by one more after Taylor Duryea joined his former teammate Luke Breust in announcing his retirement. Duryea played in two flags with the Hawks before moving to the Western Bulldogs and has called time after 219 games for the two clubs. It leaves veteran goalkicker Jack Gunston and St Kilda star Brad Hill as the only remaining players from Hawthorn's three-peat of premierships in 2013-15. 'I am obviously proud of the team success I've been able to experience at both AFL and VFL level, but I think it's enduring adversity and overcoming challenges that have made my career so fulfilling,' Duryea said. 'Dealing with injury and form, signing eight one-year contracts or the change of clubs… I've always remained consistent in my approach to both the game and the people around me. 'I hope I can leave the game with an earned respect for not just my footy but for how I treated people. I have formed so many wonderful relationships that I'll forever be grateful for. 'I'm thankful to both Hawthorn and Western Bulldogs for believing in me. I hope I've been able to positively impact both clubs who placed faith and trust in me. 'I'm extremely proud to be a 100-game player at two clubs, that will forever hold a special place in my heart.' Duryea played in the 2014 and 2015 Hawthorn premierships before joining the Bulldogs for the 2019 season and played 101 games for the red, white, and blue, including the losing 2021 grand final. The 34-year-old has only played five games AFL games in 2025. ********************************************** Three-time premiership-winning Hawthorn star Luke Breust has announced his retirement, leaving teammate Jack Gunston and coach Sam Mitchell as the final active links to the club's unforgettable three-peat of grand final wins. Breust, 34, will wear the Hawthorn jumper for the 307th time in Saturday's MCG clash with Melbourne, elevating him to equal third on Hawthorn's all-time games-played list. It's a record he'll share with Mitchell, who was a teammate in three premiership wins and is now his coach, and one he could pass should he maintain his spot as the Hawks push to the finals. Breust is one of only nine Hawks to have played 300 or more games for the club and his 552 goals puts him seventh on Hawthorn's all-time goalkicker list. Hawks legends Jack Gunston, Sam Mitchell and Luke Breust. Picture: Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images It brings to an end an epic career that started in the small NSW town of town Temora before he was picked up as an 18-year-old in the 2009 rookie draft. Bruest went on to play in premierships in 2013, 2014 and 2015 as part of one of the most dominant teams of the modern era. Breust was also a two-time All-Australian and a five-team leading goalkicker at the Hawks. He also holds the AFL record for most games played by a rookie. 'Luke's accolades and achievements will see him remembered as one of Hawthorn's genuine greats – three-time premiership player, twice an All Australian, five times our leading goalkicker, 550-plus total career goals, 300-plus games – Punky has done it all,' Hawthorn football boss Rob McCartney said. 'Whether it was hitting the scoreboard individually or bringing teammates into the game, Luke's ability to contribute consistently at a high level over such a long period of time has been one of his trademark attributes. Breust is one of Hawthorn's all-time greats. 'In recent years, his leadership, mentoring and guidance of our younger players has allowed both individuals and the team to improve. His legacy will be seen on game day for many years to come, particularly when you watch the skill and craft of our small forwards. 'In the future, Luke should sit in the stands and smile knowing he continues to be part of what we do.' Gunston, 33 who returned to the Hawks after a short-lived move to Brisbane, has kicked 53 goals in 2025 and is set to play on into 2026 as the final active player from the premiership three-peat.
