HAWKESBURY INSIDE MAIL
MALBORK CASTLE (1) is a son of trainer Richard Litt's former Group 1 gun Castelvecchio and is coming off a confidence boosting success last start. The three-year-old relished the step up to 1800m at Hawkesbury and should be well-suited at the same venue over 2200m. He can make it two on the spin here. TWILIGHT ELEGANCE (4) has mixed her form this preparation, breaking her maiden first-up over 1400m at Kembla before failing to fire over the Wyong mile. She's from the same family as former star Miss Finland so should appreciate the step up in trip. Her stablemate MAIRE DE PARIS (6) wasn't far off Malbork Castle last time. She can run well.
BET: MALBORK CASTLE to win.
WILD THOUGHTS (4) was scratched from Saturday's meeting on his home track at Kembla Grange to line up here. He's only had the one start to date but looks set to have a decent future. The son of So You Think wasn't far off subsequent stakes performer Modella in that debut over 1300m back on January 29. COLD BREW (1) has been runner-up in four of his five starts to date. He seems to still be putting it all together but a maiden victory isn't far away. MOCHIMA (7) and SISTER'S RUN (8) have both trialled up fairly ahead of their respective debuts.
BET: WILD THOUGHTS to win.
RACE 3: SUPER MAIDEN PLATE (1500m)
LE CHOCOLAT (4) is somewhat surprisingly still a maiden heading into the final weeks of his four-year-old season. The Chris Waller-trained galloper returns from a 38-week break with a couple of quiet trials typical of the stable. He finds himself in a winnable race here and a win might just be the confidence boost he needs to go on with it. THE BEAST (6) continues to knock at the door with seven placings in nine starts. He should settle on speed and be in this race a long way. JAMARNI (3) is racing consistently this time while Devoted To You in the unknown quantity.
BET: LE CHOCOLAT to win, quinella 4,6.
MISS JUDAS (5) has had her fair share of chances to break her maiden and gets another golden opportunity here. A placegetter in five of her 11 starts, the daughter of Microphone produced a tidy trial victory in the lead-up to her first-up assignment. 1000m looks to be the perfect kick-off point. EFHARISTO (2) hasn't been seen at the races for 83 weeks when she was runner-up to Erno's Cube in the 2023 Max Lees Classic. If she can recapture that form, she wins this but you have to take her on trust. ZING TO ME (9) had excuses first-up and is capable of bouncing back in a winnable race.
BET: MISS JUDAS to win.
THE GREY (4) looks as his name suggests and is trained on course with Brad Widdup. He finds this race third-up and should be ready to peak after battling on for third at the same track and trip last time. Widdup has added the blinkers again to keep his mind of the job. Father-son team Rob and Luke Price have two chances in ALL MACHIAVELLIAN (3) and MR ROCK IT (1) can both have claims. The former is the clear class runner if he brings his A-game while the latter has been racing well without winning this time in. DESI EMPEROR (6) keeps running into one better but it's hard to knock his consistency.
BET: THE GREY to win. Boxed trifecta 1,3,4,6.
AUDREY'S LANE (2) finds herself in the most competitive race on the program. The Brad Widdup-trained mare is first-up from 35-week break with a couple of trials under her belt. She's performed well fresh before and has loves the 1300m with two wins in a placing in three starts at the trip already. The firm track should be to TRUE AMOR's (7) liking. He looked like his wheels were spinning on rain-affected going in town but should get firmer footing here in easier grade. The blinkers go on. CALIFORNIA SECRET (1) has won his past two starts and gets in well considering after Braith Nock's 1.5kg claim.
BET: AUDREY'S LANE each-way.
TOMBA (3) was a complete forgive first-up at Newcastle when he didn't go a yard on heavy ground. The market said it all – drifting from $3.70 to $5.50 in betting – before only beating a runner home. Back on good ground here, he can bounce back in a big way over a 1500m trip he's won over before. KYEEMA (1) was scratched from Wednesday's Randwick Kensington meeting to target this race. The ex-Hong Kong galloper will take plenty out of his Kenso victory last time and a repeat of that performance undoubtedly has him right in this too. HEAVEN BOUND (6) strips fitter while CRIMSON MISS (9) is lightly-raced with her best in front of her.

EAST COAST WEATHER A vigorous coastal low has formed off Australia's east coast, and it's already bringing a lot of wild weather. Damaging surf, heavy rain and flooding and dangerous winds are what we can expect in the next few days from the vigorous coastal low that's brewing off the east coast of Australia. A coastal low is a type of low-pressure weather system that usually develops on or near the coast. They form when warm air is pulled into the atmosphere and as air goes up, it leaves less air behind, creating a low pressure. This makes nearby air rush in to fill in the space causing wind. And as the rising air cools, it can form clouds and bring rain or storms. This powerful system is already affecting communities with weather warnings in place from Coffs Harbor all the way to Bega. While emergency services are on standby, authorities are urging people in affected areas to be prepared, like tying down loose items outside, having an emergency kit on the go, staying inside and away from windows, and to stay in the loop with latest weather updates. EUROPE HEATWAVE There's a massive heatwave going on right across Europe at the moment. In France, 200 schools will be closed this week due to the heat, and from UK to Germany temps are 5 to 10 degrees higher than usual. In Spain, it's set to be the hottest June on record, and right throughout the continent people are doing what they can to stay cool. Wildfires have also started in some regions, with more than 50,000 people evacuated from their homes in Türkiye. WIMBLEDON STARTS It was also the hottest first day of Wimbledon on record. 33 degrees is what the temperature got to as players sweltered through their first round match ups. World Number 1 Aryna Sabalenka cruised through her first round matchup, while Aussie and 20th seed Alexei Popyrin lost to the world number 461 Arthur Fery. TERRITORY DAY Today is the 1st of July, which means those up north are celebrating Territory Day! That's right, things are about to get loud in the NT, because Territory Day is also known as cracker night. It's the one time each year when Aussies don't need a permit to buy and set off fireworks. But only in the NT, and fireworks can only be launched between 6 and 11pm. It's all in celebration of the day that the Northern Territory was given the right to govern itself. Before that it was the federal government that made laws for people living up here. But as much fun as fireworks can be fun, improper use can cause a lot of problems, like starting fires, scaring animals, and injuring people. Fireworks are explosives, so it's important to follow the safety guidelines like clearing the area of dry materials, having a hose or buckets of water handy, keeping everyone at a safe distance. And making sure your ready for when they go boom. T-REX RACING First up, to the US state of Washington where more than 300 people dressed up as dinosaurs for the annual T-rex world championship races. But the action wasn't just on the ground. Skydiving t-rexes parachuted from a height of 1,500 metres, landing on the track before making a bolt for the finish line. ROLL CLOUD Now to Portugal where beachgoers were stopped in their tracks by this rather ominous roll cloud. Rolls clouds are pretty rare here in Portugal, which is currently going through a heat wave. They form when warm air meets cooler air, sending the warm air up, up into the sky. DONKEY FESTIVAL And finally to donkeys in the small Colombian town of Moniquirá which are taking part in the annual Donkey Contest. Now in it's 19th year, the event started out as a fun way to support local farmers and highlight the important role donkeys have played as their loyal sidekicks. And despite having a reputation for appearing rather stubborn, I've got to say these donkeys seem extremely patient under all these outfits.

Wimbledon 2025 live scores: Alex De Minaur vs Roberto Carballés Baena, day 2 schedule

Alex de Minaur has well on top in his clash with Roberto Carballes Baena as a women's singles heavyweight crashed out in a first-round shock. He was forced to work for the first set, before cruising through the second. The 11th-seed, de Minaur earned six set points before finally closing out the opening set 6-2 in 46 minutes. He hit 13 winners to his opponent's seven, but Baena didn't go down without a fight. De Minaur claimed the second set 6-2 to set up a chance of a straigh sets victory. Fellow Aussie Aleksander Vukic is up two sets to nil in his clash with Chun-Hsin Tseng, 6-3 6-4. James McCabe and Adam Walton both dropped the first set of their matches against Arthur Cazaux and Fabian Marozsan. The women's draw has opened up after American Jessica Pegula suffered a shock Wimbledon exit, the third seed beaten by Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets. Pegula was thrashed 6-2, 6-3 by the world No.116 in just 58 minutes. It was a bitter blow for 2024 US Open finalist Pegula, who has never been past the quarter-finals at the All England Club The 31-year-old played with heavy strapping on her right knee and never looked comfortable in a lacklustre performance. Since losing last year's US Open final against Aryna Sabalenka, world number three Pegula has been eliminated before the quarter-finals in all three of her Grand Slam appearances. It was only Cocciaretto's second win against a top-10 player. Daria Kasatkina and Prscilla Hon were flying the Australian flag in the women's draw to start day two. Kasatkina was forced to work in her opening round match with Emiliana Arango, before eventually winning 7-5 6-3. Hon was bundled out by Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets, 6-2 7-5.

AFL star Tom Lynch banned for five weeks over 'bygone era' hit on Jordon Butts

Richmond forward Tom Lynch has been suspended for five matches for a strike described by the AFL as a throwback to a "bygone era". The 32-year-old's ban is the longest this season, eclipsing the four-game stretch handed to Hawthorn's Conor Nash in April for striking. Lynch failed to convince the AFL tribunal on Tuesday night to reduce the grading of the impact of his blow, which felled Adelaide's Jordon Butts on Saturday at the MCG. Lynch's strike was graded as severe impact, intentional conduct and high contact by the AFL's match review officer Michael Christian. The dual premiership player's counsel Sam Tovey argued the impact should have been graded as medium or high, while accepting the other gradings. "I contested the mark, felt like Butts was holding on to me … I swung my arm around to get him off me," Lynch told the tribunal. "Absolutely I got it wrong and it was the wrong thing to do." Lynch denied hitting Butts with a clenched right fist as he can't fully bend the middle finger on that hand since the middle knuckle was fused in a 2020 operation. "I can't bend my middle finger so I can't fully form a clenched fist," he said. "It was more a swipe to get him off me." Lynch apologised to Butts post-game. "I walked over, shook his hand, and apologised and wished him all the best for the season," he said. "I got it wrong. I told him that he certainly beat me today and he seemed fine." The AFL's counsel Nick Pane KC said Lynch's strike was "the type of action from a bygone era". "There is no place for it in our game," Pane said. It was largely irrelevant whether Lynch's right hand formed a clenched fist, was partially clenched, or cupped, he said. "In any event … when it's delivered with significant force, it has the potential to cause injury," Pane said. "It's more good luck than good management that flusher contact wasn't made and that injury wasn't sustained." Despite Butts continuing to play unhurt, Pane called for a five-game suspension. But Lynch's counsel Tovey argued the strike should have been graded as medium impact, resulting in a two-match ban. "The worst that could have happened, largely did happen," Tovey said. After an 80-minute hearing, tribunal chairman Jeff Gleeson KC and panel members David Neitz and Jordan Bannister deliberated for about 50 minutes. "This was what we regard as a serious intentional action with the potential to cause serious injury," Gleeson said. "When we consider the totality of the matters, including the fact that Lynch clearly formed an intent to strike Butts … we find that a significant sanction is warranted." Separately, Lynch accepted a $1,000 fine for striking Butts in a separate second-term clash. He also accepted a $1,875 fine for engaging in a melee from an incident in the first quarter also involving Butts. Butts was also charged with engaging in a melee from the first-term incident but has challenged his fine via written submission, with a verdict expected on Wednesday. AAP
