Arizona Cardinals 53-man roster projections before preseason opener

USA Today3 days ago
Our latest projections as the Cardinals play a preseason game on Saturday.
The Arizona Cardinals have a preseason game this week as they face the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday at State Farm Stadium. Training camp is coming to an end.
We are closer to when they must trim down their roster to 53 players.
With what we have learned in camp so far, this is a new 53-man roster projection for the Cardinals.
Arizona Cardinals 53-man roster projection: Preseason Week 1
Quarterback: Kyler Murray, Jacoby Brissett
Running back: James Conner, Trey Benson, Emeri Demercado, DeeJay Dallas
Both positions seem like locks. Barring injury, there doesn't seem to be any possible movement. Clayton Tune is set for the practice squad and the same goes for Michael Carter, just like last season.
Wide receivers: Marvin Harrison Jr., Michael Wilson, Zay Jones, Greg Dortch, Simi Fehoko
It sounds like Xavier Weaver needs to show a little more, and the Cardinals can just go with five wideouts to accommodate for the offensive lineman. Fehoko's salary guarantees keep him here for now.
Tight ends: Trey McBride, Elijah Higgins, Tip Reiman, Travis Vokolek
The only possibility here changing might be keeping only three on the active roster to accomodate for a position somewhere else.
Offensive line: Paris Johnson, Evan Brown, Hjalte Froholdt, Isaiah Adams, Jonah Williams, Kelvin Beachum, Will Hernandez, Jon Gaines, Christian Jones, Hayden Conner
Hernandez isn't on the team but the belief is that he will be soon. We keep 10 offensive linemen to keep Jones and Conner.
Defensive line: Calais Campbell, Dalvin Tomlinson, Darius Robinson, Dante Stills, Justin Jones, L.J. Collier
I still expect Walter Nolen and Bilal Nichols to start the season on PUP, so they won't count toward the 53-man roster, making their additions a future problem.
Outside linebacker: Josh Sweat, Zaven Collins, Baron Browning, BJ Ojulari, Jordan Burch
Ojulari is a guy to watch. He still is on PUP. Could he be traded if healthy? There wasn't room for Xavier Thomas.
Inside linebacker: Mack Wilson, Akeen Davis-Gaither, Owen Pappoe, Cody Simon, Mykal Walker
This group is probably a lock. Walker is there for special teams.
Cornerback: Garrett Williams, Max Melton, Will Johnson, Kei'Trel Clark, Denzel Burke
Jaylon Jones, being a solid special teams guy, is a player to watch who could move past Clark.
Safety: Budda Baker, Jalen Thompson, Dadrion Tayor-Demerson, Joey Blount
I'm not picking Kitan Crawford over Blount for special teams yet. Blount is still a core guy and Crawford can sit on the practice squad.
This group is locked in.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has given Taylor Swift the go-ahead to buy the Chiefs. Is she going to do it?

Taylor Swift might not play football, but her name has now become synonymous with the Kansas City Chiefs. Ever since Swift and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce began dating, Swifties have been buying Chiefs merch and stalking whether or not she'd be in attendance at every home game. And now? People think she might become a Chiefs co-owner! Is Taylor Swift buying the Kansas City Chiefs? Despite what you might have read online, Taylor Swift is not buying into the Kansas City Chiefs anytime soon. Swift started dating Kelce in the fall of 2023, and since then, the musical icon's name has been nonstop talk in sports media. People have even speculated that the NFL is fixing football games because of Swift. So, when more rumours started spreading that Swift could possibly invest in the Kansas City Chiefs, it didn't seem like an idea that was that far off. Especially given that Swift has a net worth of $1.6 billion. In recent years, celebrities have made massive investments in sports teams. Such as Michael B. Jordan purchasing a stake in AFC Bournemouth and Ryan Reynolds buying Wrexham AFC with actor Rob Mac. So, the idea of Taylor Swift investing in the Kansas City Chiefs seemed incredibly believable. Even NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said, via Albert Breer, posted on X 'If she's interested, I think she has the ability to do it.' Goodell also commented on Swift and Kelce's relationship, 'They're happy. They seem to be enjoying their relationship and it's great. It has connected more fans of Taylor's and more fans of the NFL to see that they have a connection to our game. She's an unbelievable artist, Travis is an unbelievable player and I think it's great for the league.' However, there has been no official word or sign that Taylor Swift is investing in the Kansas City Chiefs, so right now it looks like she'll stick to cheering on her boyfriend from the sidelines, and hopefully penning another album. Former All-Star, Gold Glove catcher Yadier Molina back in Cardinals dugout as temporary bench coach

A familiar face, and number, is in the St. Louis Cardinals dugout this weekend at Busch Stadium. Former franchise stalwart and dependable backstop Yadier Molina — a 10-time All-Star, nine-time Gold Glove winner and two-time World Series champ during his 19-year playing career with the Cardinals — is serving as a temporary bench coach this weekend as St. Louis hosts the rival Chicago Cubs. He did so Friday night during a 5-0, series-opening win, and he'll be back out there again Saturday night. In December 2023, Molina joined the organization as special assistant to president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. That said, due to family reasons, Molina was unable to follow through in that role like he expected, reported, citing the ball club. This weekend marks Molina's first trip to the stadium he called home from 2004-22 since longtime Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainright had his retirement ceremony at the end of the 2023 season. Molina, who reportedly was going to be in town for personal business anyway, reached out to the Cardinals about helping out, and the organization made it happen. Oliver Marmol, who managed Molina in his final Cardinals season, invited the former catcher to join him in the dugout, and Molina gladly accepted the offer. 'The idea is to come here and help the catchers, give them advice and make them better,' Molina said Friday, per 'I just want to be here to help. I'm not coming here to try and make things different. I just want to help the young guys however I can, and I just want to enjoy the game. "I don't miss playing; I miss being at the field. But just being here, and being back in St. Louis, that means a lot to me. In this town, they care about me and care about my family. It's going to be a big night for me, and I'm looking forward to that." Molina, now 43, has more than dabbled in coaching since the iconic catcher retired at 41 years old in 2022. He notably managed Puerto Rico to the quarterfinals of the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He's returning to that role for the 2026 WBC. But he said he'll wait at least another year after that before taking a full-time MLB coaching position. 'That's the plan,' Molina said, per The Associated Press. '[My son's] a [high school] senior right now. After he finishes school, that's probably when I start coaching in the major leagues.' While Molina will be with the Cardinals for only 48 hours this weekend, he's interested in contributing at other points of the season, according to possibly as early as two weeks from now during St. Louis' road trip to Florida. The Cardinals have yet to make the playoffs since Molina retired. St. Louis is currently one game above .500 and 4.5 games back from an NL wild-card spot. Molina's presence Friday night coincided with a win. Perhaps his return to the Cardinals' dugout can spark a postseason push.
