IPS Sonali Mishra assumes charge as first woman DG of RPF

New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Sonali Mishra, a 1983 batch IPS officer from Madhya Pradesh cadre, on Friday assumed charge as the new director general of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), marking a historic first in the force's 143-year journey, the Railway Ministry said.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved her appointment as the director general (DG), RPF, until her superannuation on October 31, 2026.
'An officer known for her professionalism, dedication and leadership across key policing roles, Ms. Mishra brings over three decades of distinguished service to the post. Prior to this assignment, she served as Additional Director General of Police (Selection/Recruitment) with the additional charges of ADG, Police Training & Research Institute, Bhopal and Director of the Madhya Pradesh Police Academy, Bhopal," the ministry said in a press note.
'She has also served in the CBI, BSF and has international exposure of having served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo. She has been honoured with prestigious awards, including the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in recognition of her commitment to excellence and professionalism," it added.
The Railway Protection Force, mandated with the security of railway property, passenger safety and crime prevention across one of the world's largest rail networks, stands to benefit from her visionary and inclusive leadership, the ministry said.
'Her extensive experience across state and central police organizations is expected to bring renewed momentum to modernization, capacity building and community engagement within the Force," the press note said.
'In particular, her focus will be on strengthening the RPF's initiatives in leveraging cutting-edge technology and enhancing its role in preventing organised crime such as human trafficking and crimes against vulnerable passengers," it added.
On assuming charge, Mishra expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve and reaffirmed her commitment to upholding the values of vigilance, courage and service.
'The Force proudly welcomes its new leader and looks forward to achieving new milestones under her stewardship," the press note said. PTI JP AS AS

CB concludes questioning in OTET paper leak case, finds new details
CUTTACK: The Crime Branch has reportedly gathered crucial information and evidence in the special Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test (OTET) question paper leak case after interrogating two prime accused, BSE data entry operator Jitan Moharana and Bijaya Mishra, working president of the state ex-cadre teachers' association. The duo, arrested earlier in connection with the case, were taken on a two-day remand on Monday and questioned by a special team of officers. During interrogation, both confessed to their role in the leak, sources said. Moharana reportedly said in his statement that he obtained the question papers from the laptop of the BSE vice-president using a pen drive well before the examination. He printed hard copies from a printer, placed the pen drive and the papers in an envelope, and drove to Nayagarh in his own car, hiring a driver for Rs 1,500. In Nayagarh, Moharana handed the envelope to Mishra's brother. Subsequently, Mishra transferred Rs 2.5 lakh to Moharana's bank account via UPI. The leaked papers were later sent to Ambodala in Rayagada, where accused Prasant Kumar Khamari, a teacher at government upper primary school at Bhejipadar in Bhawanipatna, translated them using Google Translate and rewrote them by hand to disguise the leak, Crime Branch sources said. Based on the accused's statements, the CB has also been questioning Mishra's brother, the car driver, and a woman data entry operator from the BSE vice-president's office to determine when Moharana accessed the laptop and why the activity went unnoticed. So far, eight people, including BSE vice-president Nihar Ranjan Mohanty, have been arrested in the case. Officials suspect a larger syndicate operating across several districts, possibly involving more board officials. Following the end of their remand, Moharana and Mishra were produced before the JMFC-3 court on Wednesday afternoon.

Delhi security tightened with snipers, drones, high-tech checks ahead of Independence Day
Security has been tightened across Delhi ahead of Independence Day, with extensive police deployment, advanced surveillance systems, and strict checks to ensure safety as Prime Minister Modi is set to address the nation from the Red Fort. Snipers have also been positioned on high-rise buildings, and flying objects have been banned in the area during the celebrations, India TV reported. Security has also been intensified at New Delhi Railway Station also, where the Railway Protection Force (RPF) is conducting round-the-clock patrols with dog squads. Inspector Yashwant Singh told ANI, 'We are on high alert in view of Independence Day. Security personnel are deployed at all entry and exit gates, and luggage is being thoroughly checked.' Authorities said all these measures have been put in place to ensure a smooth and secure Independence Day celebration in the national capital, allowing citizens and guests to participate safely in the historic event. Around 2,500 cadets and 'My Bharat' volunteers will take part in the celebrations, forming the 'Naya Bharat' logo on Gyanpath opposite the Red Fort ramparts. About 5,000 special guests, including athletes, top-performing farmers, school children, and frontline workers, have been invited to witness the event, news agency PTI reported. Evening band performances will be held at key locations across Delhi, including India Gate, Connaught Place, Kartavya Path, Vijay Chowk, Red Fort, Purana Quila, and major railway stations.
