T-Mobile customers suddenly have better coverage in some areas
Earlier this month, T-Mobile completed the acquisition of UScellular's wireless operations and spectrum assets. It also welcomed four million of the latter's customers to its network. While many stakeholders had opposed the transaction, for now, it appears to be beneficial for both sets of customers. T-Mobile and UScellular customers are now enjoying better coverage due to an improved roaming experience.
T-Mobile customers can now access UScellular's network Carriers purchase roaming services from other wireless providers to ensure their customers aren't left without coverage in areas where they don't have infrastructure.
UScellular mainly focused on rural areas and had reciprocal roaming agreements with many companies. T-Mobile was an exception, as even though it allowed customers of rural carriers to use its network, it didn't let its customers do the same. However, since T-Mobile now owns UScellular, that barrier no longer exists. As a result, T-Mobile customers can now connect to UScellular towers in areas that previously were dead zones for them.Of course, the question remains of whether T-Mobile will honor the roaming agreements UScellular had with other rural companies, though it's not legally required to do so.
When T-Mobile announced the completion of the transaction, it revealed that not only would UScellular's customers benefit from its network, but the same would be true for T-Mobile customers who pass through UScellular's footprint.
In the coming month, T-Mobile and UScellular's networks will be merged and will function as one for an even better experience. That's because even T-Mobile and UScellular have formally joined forces, their networks have not yet been integrated, so for now, their customers can only look forward to extended roaming capabilities for no additional charge. Before the purchase, UScellular customers only had limited roaming access to T-Mobile 's network. All in all, this is a win-win, with customers keeping their existing plan and having their existing network coverage with the added benefit of expanded coverage from one more network.

Google teases Pixel 10 AI features in video
I'm sure that I don't have to tell you how important two letters are to smartphone manufacturers these days. The letters, "A" and "I" (which you'll note I presented to you in alphabetical order), mean so much to smartphone buyers when done correctly. Google and Samsung haven't written AI checks that their phones couldn't cash. That is what Apple did with the hugely disappointing Apple Intelligence AI initiative. Where Apple went wrong is exactly where Google went right. Apple made promises about Siri's AI capabilities at WWDC 2024, showing examples of how the digital assistant would look through your email, texts, calendar, and other apps to tell you what time your mom was supposed to land at the airport, and what time and where dinner reservations were made. Apple even went to the expense of shooting an ad showing how this "Personal" Siri would come to the rescue of a teen iPhone user who couldn't remember the name of the guy she had just met and had an interest in. For those of you who have used Google's Gemini app, OpenAI's ChatGPT, or any of the AI chatbox apps, it is so clear that they are the future of the digital assistant. Google has a head start as it is replacing Google Assistant with Gemini. I've been using Gemini as the assistant on my Pixel 6 Pro, and I love it. It answers my queries with responses that allow you to take a deeper dive if you wish to. AI is much more than a chatbox looking to answer your questions. I really wouldn't say that Google, Samsung, or Apple have done a good job to promote these other capabilities. Google, however, has released a teaser revealing some of the AI features already available on Pixel phones that will still be available for the Pixel 10 series. I guess that really doesn't make it much of a teaser. It starts with a question that makes you think: "What if your phone could do things other phones couldn't?" For example, "What if the camera could get super, super, super close while being really, really, really far?" This refers to Super Res Zoom, which is a feature that uses computational photography and AI to enhance and add detail to zoomed-in photos of people or animals physically far away, making it appear as though you were right in front of them. This would be a great AI feature for those watching performers on a stage, while sitting in the cheap seats. The next question, "What if you could be in the group photo even if you snapped the group photo?" is about the feature "Add Me." Let's say you want to take a group photo and add yourself to the photograph later. With "Add Me," you take the shot of the group, making sure to leave room for yourself. Someone else takes a second photo of just you. AI seamlessly merges the two photos together, making it appear as though you were in the original shot to begin with even though you took the picture. Google then says, "While you used to be on the other side of the camera, now the camera is on your side." The teaser ends with this deep thought, "What if you asked more of your phone and your phone answered?" We should learn more about the AI capabilities of the Pixel 10 series this coming Wednesday, August 20, when the "Made by Google" event takes place and the Pixel 10 line is unveiled. Besides the phones, we should see the Pixel Watch 4 introduced along with the more affordable Pixel Buds 2a.

Weekly poll results: the ringer is off all the time for many, others switch manually
Last week, we asked you whether you keep your phone ringer on and, if you do, what ringtone do you use. As we suspected, the 'ringer on all the time' option was the less common choice, but it's still how a quarter of voters use their phone daily. Then there is a nearly dead-even split between those who keep their phones on vibrate all the time and those who switch manually. Of the latter, some are lucky enough to still have a physical switch, but there will be fewer and fewer such phones as time goes by. Whether by switch or by using the settings, people who toggle their ringers based on where they are and what they are doing tend to enable it when outside or in otherwise noisy environments. Interestingly, quite a few people reported that they use some sort of automation to change the ringer profile, e.g. putting the phone on silent at night. Alternatively, some rely on smartwatches/bands for notifications, but those make up less than 10% of voters. Reading through the comments, we saw quite a few people complaining that the vibration on their phones is weak – we suspect that more people would go the 'vibrate only' route if vibration motors get a boost in power. Among people whose phones ring for incoming calls and messages, nearly half use a custom ringtone. Nearly. Usually, it's either a song they like or a particular tone from an old phone. The former change the song often enough, the latter have found the perfect ringtone and are sticking to it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? Still, the majority of people use a ringtone that was included by the manufacturer – it's a 3:2 split between those who listen to the preloaded ringtones and pick one and those who never change the setting and just use the default ringtone.

Android Chrome and Photos apps both get a makeover courtesy of Google

The changes are in line with Google's Material 3 Expressive design makeovers. The new look was discovered in the app code for version 7.41 of the Google Photos app. Another look at the Material 3 redesigned Chrome settings page for Android. | Image credit-Android Police The Material 3 redesign will allow you to replace the circle that contains an image of your face in Google Photos with various shapes (this is the Material 3 face picker). After selecting the new shape of the "box" you want to contain your photo, you can change the name that the Google Photos app uses to refer to you. This is a more streamlined way to change your name than the current method, which requires you to find your photo under the People and Pets collection and type your name twice.
