Selena Gomez laughs off Senatorial candidate, Sam Parker's call for her deportation

Express Tribune28-01-2025

Selena Gomez has responded to U.S. Senate candidate Sam Parker's controversial call for her deportation with a mix of humor and resilience. The pop star found herself in the political crossfire after sharing an emotional video addressing the impact of President Donald Trump's immigration policies.
In the video, Gomez—who is of Mexican and Italian descent—tearfully apologized to those affected by the policies, saying, 'All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don't understand.' While her message garnered support, it also invited backlash, including from Parker, who accused her of siding with undocumented immigrants.
🥺🥺
Parker tweeted from an alternate account, 'Selena Gomez picked illegals over America… Maybe Selena should be deported, too.' He later doubled down, posting on his campaign account, 'Deport Selena Gomez.'
Deport Selena Gomez.
— Sam Parker 🇺🇲 (@SamParkerSenate)
Rather than stay silent, Gomez fired back on Instagram Stories, writing, 'Oh Mr. Parker, Mr. Parker. Thanks for the laugh, and the threat.'

After Gomez posted the video, internet users also chimed in with their opinions with some people including controversial British media personality, Piers Morgan criticising the singer for her 'fake activism'.
Posting yourself weeping over illegal immigrant criminals being deported is a new level of absurd celebrity narcissism.
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan)
I can't take her fake activism seriously anymore.
— JONETI (@jarianaoutdid)
i opened the video without reading the caption and i thought she was apologizing for emilia perez😭
— ً (@bloodanya)
Others empathised with Gomez and expressed shock at the blatant xenophobia from an American politician.
The way Mexicans have been claiming she is not Latina, hating on her, and making fun of her illness for the past months while she's crying for them, Selena they can never make me hate you
— ✮ (@raresblvd)
I'm literally shocked at how normalized racism and xenophobia is in america, how can a politician freely say something like this ? deported where ? back to Texas ? Moron
— nicholas (@whereisrauli)
The backlash ultimately forced Gomez to delete the original video, later expressing frustration, 'Apparently, it's not OK to show empathy for people.'
Born in Grand Prairie, Texas, Gomez is a natural-born U.S. citizen. In a past interview with Define American, she proudly identified as a 'third-generation American-Mexican.'

Dollar slips in broad risk rally after Trump announces Israel-Iran ceasefire

SINGAPORE: The dollar fell on Tuesday while the Australian and New Zealand dollars rose after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, in news that sent investors cheering and sparked a risk rally across markets. Trump announced a complete ceasefire between Israel and Iran, potentially ending the 12-day conflict that saw millions flee Tehran and prompted fears of further escalation in the war-torn region. There was no immediate comment yet from Israel. While an Iranian official earlier confirmed that Tehran had agreed to a ceasefire, the country's foreign minister said there would be no cessation of hostilities unless Israel stopped its attacks. Dollar firms as markets brace for Iran response to US attacks The risk-sensitive Aussie got a lift and last traded 0.3% higher at $0.6480 as did the kiwi , which rose 0.3% to $0.5994. Israel's shekel rallied sharply too, as it jumped 1% against the dollar to its strongest level since February 2023. 'It's obviously positive news for risk sentiment,' said Rodrigo Catril, senior currency strategist at National Australia Bank. 'We need to obviously have a bit more detail in terms of exactly what all this means… I suppose it will be the conditions of the ceasefire, and what are the conditions for a more longer-lasting peace deal.' The dollar, which last week drew support from safe-haven demand, fell broadly in the wake of the news. Against the yen, the greenback was down 0.37% at 145.60. The euro rose 0.12% to $1.1592 and sterling advanced 0.11% to $1.3541. The yen and euro benefited from the slide in oil prices as both the EU and Japan rely heavily on imports of oil and liquefied natural gas, while the United States is a net exporter. Trump's comments on his Truth Social site came after Iran launched a missile attack on an American air base in Qatar on Monday that caused no injuries, in a move which he dismissed as a 'weak response' to U.S. attacks. Adding to headwinds for the dollar were dovish comments from Federal Reserve policymaker Michelle Bowman, who said the U.S. central bank should consider interest rate cuts soon. Bowman's openness to cutting rates soon is supported by Fed Governor Christopher Waller, who said in a television interview last week he'd also consider a rate cut at next month's meeting. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar was little changed at 98.23, having declined more than 0.5% in the previous session. 'There appears to be increasing division among the ranks of the Fed board ahead of Fed Chair Powell's testimony,' said Tony Sycamore, a market analyst at IG. 'The chance of a July rate cut… is still underpriced. I think it should be higher than that.' Markets are now pricing in more than a 20% chance the Fed could ease rates in July, up from 14.5% a day ago, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Fed Chair Jerome Powell is due to testify before the U.S. Congress on Tuesday and Wednesday, where focus will be on the outlook for U.S. rates. In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin rose more than 1% to $104,939.26, while ether jumped 2.1% to $2,397.65, in a reflection of the positive risk sentiment.

Lurching towards another war

EDITORIAL: Belying international law and his own pledges to stay away from foreign conflicts, President Donald Trump's reckless decision to strike Iran's key nuclear sites could plunge the world into yet another endless war in the Middle East. Once again, Israeli interests have dictated US policy and trumped the interests of peace in the region. President Trump was quick to declare victory following the June 22 strikes, claiming they had 'totally obliterated' Iran's nuclear ambitions while Benjamin Netanyahu was at his obsequious best terming the decision as 'courageous'. Notwithstanding the claims of absolute destruction of Iran's nuclear material by the Trump Administration, the view of independent experts analysing commercial satellite imagery has been more muted, with many voicing the opinion that while there has been damage inflicted on Tehran's nuclear enterprise, it is far from completely destroyed. It is important to note that President Trump's decision to eschew diplomacy in favour of confrontation, claiming that was the only way to deter Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, which he insisted Tehran was on the verge of obtaining, directly contradicted assessments from the US intelligence community. Back in March, the US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard had categorically declared that Iran was 'not building a nuclear weapon and … Khomeini has not authorised the nuclear weapons programme that he suspended in 2003'. Israel's relentless bombing campaign against Iran, launched earlier in the month, also continues unabated, and now the American military intervention initiated at Tel Aviv's behest risks completely undermining the pillars of international stability. It strengthens a perverse logic, which follows that non-nuclear nations that agree to dialogue — as Iran did with its nuclear talks with the US — remain vulnerable to military action while nuclear-armed countries remain untouchable. Far from deterring Tehran, this turn of events may only harden its determination to pursue nuclear capabilities, regardless of the setbacks it has faced due to the American strikes. The US, for its part, has clearly learnt no lessons from history, with President Trump now floating highly dangerous ideas around regime change in Iran. The devastating missteps committed by the world's sole superpower over the last 20 years in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya have now been followed yet again by an act of war based on a lie. For decades, Netanyahu has been goading successive American administrations into striking Iran by grossly exaggerating its nuclear capabilities, belying assessment made by UN weapons inspectors and Western intelligence agencies. And Trump has now conveniently played into his hands. How Iran responds to this naked act of aggression will likely have far-reaching consequences even though the immediate options before it remain limited. A direct attack on US assets in the region will surely result in a major American reprisal that Tehran and the wider region can ill-afford. Shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, the vital maritime corridor handling 20 percent of global oil shipments, could alienate Iran's regional allies and China, its largest oil importer, while also giving Western powers reason to intervene further in the region in a bid to prevent major market disruptions. For now, Tehran has confined its response to striking Israeli targets, but the threat of wider retaliation persists unless swift de-escalation efforts begin. However far-fetched this might seem right now, the surest path to defusing tensions lies in the US and Israel halting their campaign of aggression, starting with a ceasefire in Gaza as well as a cessation of hostilities with Iran. Third-party mediation by the likes of Qatar or China could provide opportunities for diplomatic off-ramps. Without such steps, the region, and the world, risks spiralling into uncontrolled conflict.
