Tom Cruise Praises Ex-Wife Nicole Kidman as a ‘Great Actress'

Bang Showbiz | Los Angeles
Tom Cruise has paid tribute to his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, describing her as a 'great actress' and reflecting on their time working together on Eyes Wide Shut.
The Top Gun star, who was married to Kidman from 1990 to 2001, recalled recommending her for the role of Alice Harford in Stanley Kubrick's 1999 psychological drama. Speaking to the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound magazine, Cruise said he believed Nicole was the perfect fit for the part.
'I flew out to his [Kubrick's] house and landed in his backyard,' Cruise said. 'I read the script the day before, and we spent the day talking about it. I knew all of his films. While we were getting to know each other, I suggested Nicole for the role—because, obviously, she's a great actress.'
The production of Eyes Wide Shut famously stretched over 400 days. Cruise recalled promising Kubrick his full commitment to the demanding shoot, even as the legendary director downplayed the expected timeline.
'I knew it was going to be a long shoot,' Cruise said. 'He told me, 'No, no, we'll finish in three or four months.' And I said, 'Stanley, I'm here for you. Whatever it's going to take, we're going to do this.''
Reflecting on the experience, Cruise emphasized his passion for filmmaking. 'When I go to make a movie, I spend a lot of time in preparation—understanding what people need, how we can collaborate, and really create something special,' he explained.
Cruise also spoke fondly of working with Val Kilmer, who passed away last month at age 65. The two reunited in Top Gun: Maverick, and Cruise shared his appreciation for Kilmer's return to the franchise.
'I felt so grateful that he agreed to do the film,' Cruise said. 'We did a lot to make it happen. At first, he didn't want to do it—he said, 'I don't want to be a supporting character. I want to star in films.''
Despite the initial hesitation, Kilmer's appearance was a highlight for fans—and a meaningful moment for Cruise, who cherished their on-screen reunion.

Demi Moore recalls feeling ‘terrified' by General Hospital role

Bang Showbiz | Los Angeles Demi Moore felt 'a little terrified' when she was cast in 'General Hospital'. The 62-year-old actress joined the cast of the hit soap opera in 1981, and the role proved to be a real turning point in her career. The Hollywood star told People: 'I think the first big moment that kind of gave me a little bit of encouragement of, wow, this could be possible, is when I got 'General Hospital' because it was a real job on a show that was successful for a soap opera. 'In fact, it was at a heightened state because Elizabeth Taylor had just been a guest on a soap opera.' Demi quickly became convinced that she had a long-term future in the entertainment industry. Demi - who became the world's highest-paid actress in the 90s - recalled: 'Literally, it was a month before my 19th birthday. And so it was like a real job where I was going to be paid and have an actual salary. Meaning that I didn't have to have another job. I could actually live by doing this thing that I loved and hoped I could do. So that was like the first moment to really kick it off.' Despite this, Demi still felt anxious about joining the cast of the hit TV show. Looking at a photo from a publicity shoot for 'General Hospital', Demi said: 'I got 'General Hospital' a month before my 19th birthday, so I think I'm 19 years old. Super dolled up, heavy duty made up. 'You know, I just was so excited for all of it. But if I'm looking at this photo, I think I was probably a little terrified also.'

Tom Hanks returning to the stage in new Off-Broadway production

Bang Showbiz | Los Angeles Tom Hanks is to star in an off-Broadway play he has co-written. The Oscar-winning star will be making a return to the stage for the first time since his 2013 Broadway debut in 'Lucky Guy' - for which he was nominated for a Tony Award - when he appears in 'This World of Tomorrow' at the 550-seat theatre The Shed in New York City. The production will premiere on 30 October and run for eight weeks until 21 December, and is described as a blend of romance and history with a dash of science fiction. The story follows a lonely scientist from the future who travels back in time to find love at the 1939 World's Fair in Queens and will feature a cast of 10 to 12 actors, with some taking on multiple roles. The 'Forrest Gump' actor said in a statement: 'To explore the themes of love and yearning, and the struggles of Today as we carry with us the eternal memories of the Past, in such a place as The Shed, strikes me as a one-of-a-kind experience not unlike the World's Fair of 1939.'
