15,700 public grievances resolved in 2 yrs: WCD
From August 1, 2023, to July 31, 2025, the ministry received 15,761 grievances, carried forward 414 pending cases, and successfully resolved 15,782 grievances, according to the official data shared by Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur.
'Ministry of Women and Child Development through Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Mon-itoring System (CPGRAMS) portal has received 15761 Public Grievances, brought forward (previous pending) 414 grievances and disposed 15782 public grievances during the last 2 years from 1st Au-gust 2023 to 31st July 2025,' she said in a written response.
CPGRAMS, a 24x7 online platform managed by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Pub-lic Grievances under the Ministry of Personnel, allows citizens to lodge complaints regarding public service delivery across any government department or state.
The minister noted that the Women Helpline (181), operational under Mission Shakti, has assisted over 1.06 crore women nationwide since its inception in April 2015.
The toll-free service operates round-the-clock and supports women in both emergency and non-emergency situations.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) is operating an internship programme for women. In a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha Monsoon session, the Ministry clarified that the initiative is open to women students, scholars, social activists and teachers between the ages of 21 and 40 years. According to the Ministry, the programme aims to familiarise participants with policies and schemes related to women and children through short-term association. 'Interns will work on pilot projects and micro-studies focused on ongoing activities of the Ministry,' it said in its response. The Ministry stated that after completion of the internship, participants are expected to provide inputs for policy formulation. These inputs could take the form of empirical analysis, reports, or policy papers, which, the Ministry added, can help 'bridge information gaps on issues concerning women and children.' Step 1: Go to the official portal of MWCD at Step 2: Check that you are applying during the first ten days of the month before your intended internship term (for example, apply June 1–10 for August–September). Step 3: Prepare your Curriculum Vitae (CV) and a Statement of Purpose (SOP) explaining your interest in women's and children's issues. Step 4: Fill out the application form on the portal and upload your CV and SOP to complete the submission. The guidelines divide applicants into working and non-working groups. The working category includes teachers, scholars and social activists, while the non-working category consists of students enrolled in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes. Selection is also made to ensure regional and demographic diversity. 'Interns are chosen from rural and urban backgrounds, and from all zones, that is, North, South, East, West, Central, and North-East,' the Ministry noted. It also said that women from non-tier-I cities and rural areas are part of the selection pool. The programme runs in four batches each financial year — May-June, August-September, November-December, and February-March. Each batch lasts two months and can accommodate up to 20 participants. The Ministry clarified that selected interns may also be assigned to other pilot projects and studies being carried out during their tenure.

51 anganwadis in Ernakulam yet to receive fitness certificates
Fifty-one anganwadis in Ernakulam district are yet to receive fitness certificates though it is usually done between April-June coinciding with the start of the new academic year. The Ernakulam district has 2,858 anganwadis, which are supposed to get their fitness certified by assistant engineers of the local bodies concerned. In the case of 51 anganwadis, the delay in the issue of fitness certificates has been attributed to the non-availability of assistant engineers due to transfer and postings rather than safety issues. Among these, 32 anganwadis are in the Palluruthy region alone. 'They are likely to be inspected and issued fitness certificates in the next fortnight,' said Women and Child Development department sources. Cobra found in anganwadi The recent incident in which a cobra was found inside the almirah of an anganwadi in Karumaloor panchayat has raised serious safety and infrastructural concerns about anganwadis. In this case, the anganwadi remains surrounded by ripe paddy fields and a window pane was missing through which the snake is suspected to have sneaked in. 'We have replaced the window pane since then and have taken steps to clean the area in front of the anganwadi since the other three sides are paddy fields. We have also covered the air holes with nets,' said Sabitha Naser, president, Karumaloor panchayat. Infrastructural and safety issues Unsafe surroundings of anganwadi buildings, like abandoned plots with dense thicket overgrowth or a precarious tree in the neighbourhood, do pose a safety hazard, admit department sources. Around 600 anganwadis in the district do not have own buildings and operate either out of rented buildings or local body buildings for free. 'The problem is that a uniform rent is fixed for both urban and rural areas for anganwadi buildings. This makes it near impossible to find rented buildings in urban local bodies like Kochi Corporation. Low rented buildings come embedded with infrastructural and safety issues. Since land is at a premium in Kochi, anganwadis are built on one cents and two cents and in rare cases even over drains. The State government should allot dedicated space for setting up anganwadis with necessary infrastructure,' said M.G. Aristotle, Congress councillor in Kochi Corporation. A child development project officer said that since last year anganwadis are subjected to safety audit every three months and that they are no longer allowed to function out of unfit buildings. Payment The lowly monthly payment for anganwadi workers and helpers, ₹13,000 and ₹9,000 respectively, and the archaic rule for appointment also add to the problems. While SSLC pass is the criteria for appointment as workers, those who have failed SSLC are supposed to be appointed as helpers with the exception being given in scheduled caste and scheduled tribe areas. 'It is difficult in our State to find those who have failed SSLC these days. In such cases, we have to share helpers with anganwadis in the neighbouring wards provided the ward members concerned accede,' said a woman and child development department official.
