Paul Merton reveals big challenge of doing Have I Got News for You
The 68-year-old comedian and the 65-year-old journalist Ian Hislop have been panellists on the BBC One comedy quiz show - which sees them and their celebrity teammate answer questions based on, and make light of, the week's top news stories - since 1990.

Paul Merton is struggling to find "new things to say" on Have I Got News for You as the same topics are making top news stories.
The 68-year-old comedian and the 65-year-old journalist Ian Hislop have been panellists on the BBC One comedy quiz show - which sees them and their celebrity teammate answer questions based on, and make light of, the week's top news stories - since 1990.
But as they are repeatedly making jokes about subjects - including US President Donald Trump, 79 - that are constantly in the news cycle, Paul finds it tricky to produce new material.
He told the new issue of Loaded magazine: "There are certain news stories that won't go away. COVID was one, Brexit was another, and of course, Donald Trump.
"It's difficult to find new things to say, but if those are the major stories, you have to cover them."
Paul says that the producers of the show do not mention the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia every week because people want to hear good news stories.
He explained: "We sometimes cover Ukraine, but you don't want a war story every week, as I think the reason people tune in is to escape from the bad news stories.
"We have to make sure we're not concentrating too much on the gloomy stuff."
Paul said it was "special" that his teenage idols - the late comedians Peter Cook and Spike Milligan - appeared on Have I Got News for You in 1992 and 1995 respectively.
He added: "I think when you meet someone whom you deeply admired when you were a teenager, it's something special when you meet them as an adult.
"Spike Milligan and Peter Cook, for example. They would stand out as extraordinary people that you couldn't quite believe you were sharing a screen with."
Paul adored the comedienne Victoria Wood - who died of oesophageal cancer at the age of 62 in 2016 - and he thinks she turned down an offer to do Have I Got News for You because she was not keen on the programme.

He explained: "I was a huge fan of Victoria Wood, and it would have been lovely to have her on.
"I think she was asked, but maybe it wasn't her thing?
"I think most people we wanted to get on the show have been on it."

Great British Sewing Bee star flooded with support after breaking down in tears
The Great British Sewing Bee contestant was in tears after his design was praised, as it shared a link to his late mother A Great British Sewing Bee contestant broke down in tears after judges hailed his "beautiful" creation, which carried a poignant connection to his late mum. Judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young set the sewers a challenge this week to craft garments using reused and recycled materials, with many contestants bringing along old family clothing. Durham-based stitcher Dan, who started sewing aged just 10, gathered a collection of matching Christmas t-shirts his family had worn in 2022. His plan was to transform them into a single halter-neck dress, complete with a faux-fur muff. Discussing the accessory, he revealed: "This was a shawl that I made for my mum that she only wore once, unfortunately she passed away," reports Wales Online. "So I thought it'd be really nice to have her touch." When his finished creation was unveiled, Dan's garment was described as "beautiful" and he even claimed Garment of the Week honours. "I'm glad I did this, because I wanted my mum to be represented," he wept. He later reflected: "This week has been insane, I can't believe all the good comments they said. "It was really nice they got my vision and knew where I was going with it, especially this one in particular, it was really personal to me." Patrick also lauded Dan's finished piece, declaring: "It's absolutely stunning and such a beautiful story behind it. "The perfect way to go from an unwanted pile of old pyjamas into this beautiful, beautiful outfit." Following his victory, Dan said: "I've just got to trust my instincts and go with it. I'm glad that I did it on this week, where it was something so personal." Viewers were moved by the story behind his design, with one commenting: "Dan that dress was absolutely amazing mate. Thoroughly deserved garment of the week." Another viewer expressed: "Really pleased for Dan," while another added: "Definitely want to give Dan a huge cuddle." "Dan smashed it this week!" a fourth fan praised, while another admirer commented: "Well done Dan, that looked really good." The Great British Sewing Bee airs Tuesdays at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.

Match of the Day stars 'won't make the show all about them' unlike Gary Lineker
Match of The Day's new hosts are promising they won't make the show all about them. Gabby Logan, Kelly Cates and Mark Chapman don't want to be the centre of attention like axed Gary Lineker was. Instead, they want to make it all about the football when they kick things off this week. Gabby, 52, said: 'The focus is only on us because Gary's leaving, and he's such a huge name. We're nowhere near the most important people on the show. The most important thing is the football, then it's the pundits and what they think about it and we're there to bring it all together.' Kelly, 49, added: 'I didn't think there would be as much focus as there has been. I thought, probably very naively, that Gary would take it all as the outgoing person. I didn't realise people would be as interested as they are.' The trio are taking over after Gary, 64, quit the BBC over a controversial post on social media. And the new presenters insist that they won't suffer a similar gaffe as they're cautious about what they put online. Kelly said: 'I don't think I've ever really weighed in that much on anything that isn't either about football or something quite silly. That's not how I've ever used social media.' Gabby added: 'I've been conducting myself on social media while working at the BBC for nearly two decades, so it doesn't change anything. "The broadcaster is probably under the most scrutiny of any in the country because of the way it's funded and because it's accountable to the public. That's how it should be. We strive to have the highest standards. Hopefully, we'll just get on with our jobs.' Speaking earlier this year, Lineker, 64, said he believed the BBC wanted him to leave the programme, which he had anchored since 1999. Asked why he was ending his tenure as host, he replied: "Well, perhaps they want me to leave. There was the sense of that." He announced last November that he would leave the football show at the end of the last Premier League season.

Cat, 48, and Patrick, 54, shared a joint statement confirming the shock split earlier this month and Cat has now been seen enjoying some time away in Spain. The This Morning host was seen out with a friend at a restaurant in Sitges on August 2, just days after Cat and Patrick announced their separation after 12 years of marriage. In a joint statement, the couple said: 'We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved. 'We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment.' Cat's friend Ben Skervin, a freelance hairdresser with a raft of celebrity clients, shared a highlight reel of pictures and videos from his trip to Spain, describing it as 'an adventure'. Cat commented on the post: 'I love you'. A fellow diner at the restaurant where Cat and her friend were spotted told The Daily Mail: 'Cat looked a bit down and a touch crestfallen, not her usual spritely self, which is understandable given her marriage split. 'She clearly needed to be around her nearest and dearest during such a difficult time.' The So You Think You Can Dance host has been a staple of British TV since the late 1990s and moved out to the US with her family to present the dance competition. She took over from Holly Willoughby on This Morning alongside Ben Shepard in 2024, having moved back to the UK in 2020. Patrick took over from Ryan Tubridy as the host of The Late Late Show on Ireland's RTE One channel in 2023. In 2003, Patrick co-presented the talent competition show Fame Academy on BBC One alongside his future wife Cat.
