Addressing GoMs at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Sitharaman said the reforms rest on three pillars: structural changes, rate rationalisation and ease of living.
Currently, GST is levied at four rates, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, with essentials taxed at the lowest end and luxury or sin goods in the highest slab plus cess. The Centre has proposed a two-rate system of 5% and 18%, along with a special 40% slab for select demerit goods.
Live Events
Over two days, the three GoMs on insurance, compensation cess and rate rationalisation are examining issues ranging from exemptions on insurance premiums to the future of compensation cess and removing duty inversion in sectors hit by uneven rates.

Research report estimated that the latest rate-cut proposals could lower the effective weighted GST rate to 9.5% and lead to an annual revenue loss of about ₹85,000 crore, with an immediate shortfall of ₹45,000 crore if introduced from October 1.

China's Xi Jinping makes second-ever visit to Tibet as president
BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa on Wednesday for his second-ever visit as China's leader to mark the 60th anniversary of Tibet 's founding as an autonomous region. Six years after the 14th Dalai Lama fled into exile in India following a failed uprising, China's ruling Communist Party established the Tibet Autonomous Region in 1965, the country's fifth and final autonomous region after Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Guangxi and Ningxia. The designation was meant to offer local ethnic minority groups such as the Tibetans greater say over policy matters, including freedom of religious belief. But international human rights groups and exiles routinely describe China's rule in Tibet as "oppressive", an accusation that Beijing rejects. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Linda Kozlowski, 67, Shows Off Her Perfect Figure In A New Photo Reportingly Undo "To govern, stabilise and develop Tibet, the first thing is to maintain political stability, social stability, ethnic unity and religious harmony," state media cited Xi as saying to senior Tibet officials on Wednesday. Xi last flew to Tibet in July 2021 where he urged people there to "follow the party" in a visit largely perceived by outside observers to signal the Communist Party's confidence that order had finally been established in a region with a long history of protest against Chinese rule. Live Events During a brief period following the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when China further opened its doors to the outside world, Tibet was rocked by protests by monks and nuns, and then a series of self-immolations. Tibetan Buddhism must be guided to adapt to China's socialist system, Xi said. Prior to 2021, the last Chinese leader to visit Tibet was Jiang Zemin in 1990. More broadly, Tibet is a highly strategic region for China due to its border with India. Troops from both sides had clashed at their border over the years. The Himalayan region also possesses abundant natural resources including immense hydropower potential. Xi's arrival in Tibet coincided with a rare trip this week by China's top diplomat Wang Yi to India, where both countries pledged to rebuild ties damaged by a deadly 2020 border skirmish. China's latest mega hydropower project in Tibet has also unsettled India downstream. Xi said the project must be "vigorously" pursued as part of China's carbon reduction goals while protecting Asia's "water tower". Xi was accompanied by Wang Huning and Cai Qi, the party's fourth and fifth-ranked leaders. In 2015, the party sent the now retired Yu Zhengsheng , who held the equivalent rank of Wang at the time, to Tibet for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Google Pixel 10 series phones run on Tensor G5 that Google says is its 'biggest upgrade' yet
Google has launched the Pixel 10 series of smartphones – all powered by Tensor G5 . The company says that the new chip represents the company's most significant upgrade to its custom silicon yet, with a heavy emphasis on powering advanced, on-device artificial intelligence (AI) and delivering major performance gains. "Our vision for Pixel has always been to create a smartphone that's defined by smart, helpful features," the company stated in its announcement. The Tensor G5, now in its fifth generation, is the core of that strategy, it added. Tensor G5: Performance and efficiency leap Built in partnership with TSMC on a 3nm process, the Tensor G5 features major architectural improvements. Google claims the new chip delivers a 34% faster CPU on average and a 60% more powerful Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), the component dedicated to machine learning tasks. This upgrade is designed to make the Pixel 10 more responsive in daily use while also being more power-efficient. The chip also integrates new security hardware to enhance device protection. Gemini Nano for Google AI features At the heart of the Tensor G5's new capabilities is a close collaboration with Google's DeepMind AI lab. The chip is the first to run the company's newest and most efficient Gemini Nano model directly on the device, without needing to connect to the cloud. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo According to Google, this allows AI-driven features to run 2.6 times faster and twice as efficiently compared to the previous generation. This power enables a new suite of proactive features, including: Magic Cue: A system for offering proactive help and suggestions. Voice Translate: Providing real-time, on-device translation. Call Notes with actions: A feature that can automatically summarize phone conversations and identify action items. A smarter, more powerful camera The camera system, a traditional hallmark of the Pixel line, receives a significant boost from the G5's all-new Image Signal Processor (ISP). Google promises higher-quality video, particularly in low light, with motion deblur and 10-bit video now standard. The company also highlighted improvements to Real Tone technology to more accurately capture diverse skin tones. The new chip also powers advanced computational photography features like "Auto Best Take" and an impressive "Pro Res Zoom" that extends the camera's range to 100x. In a move aimed at combating misinformation, the Pixel 10 will be the first smartphone with built-in C2PA Content Credentials. This system, running securely on the Tensor G5 and Titan M2 chip, embeds secure metadata into an image's file, creating a verifiable record of its origin and edit history.
