Chhava Sanghatna clash: Ex-NCP youth wing president Suraj Chavan surrenders before Latur police

Indian Express23-07-2025
NCP leader Suraj Chavan, who was on the run for the last three days after he allegedly thrashed Chhava Sanghatna state president Vijaykumar Ghatge, surrendered before Latur Police on Wednesday, an official said.
He was issued a notice by the police and allowed to go, an official said, adding that Chavan and ten other accused would be called for questioning when needed.
When contacted, Latur DySP Ranjeet Sawant said,'Chavan surrendered at Vivekanand police station in Latur today after he was booked under Section 118 (1) of BNS. Though the offence is cognisable as the punishment under it is less than seven years, he was not arrested. He was told to present himself before the police whenever needed for questioning.' He denied that there was any pressure on the police to go soft on the accused
Chavan had resigned as the NCP's youth wing president on directions from the party head and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar amid outrage over the assault. Police said other accused in the case have also surrendered and told to present themselves when needed for questioning.
Ghatge was thrashed by Chavan and other members of the NCP after he threw playing cards on the table in front of NCP state president Sunil Tatkare during his press conference on Sunday.
Ghatge and other members of Chhava Sanghatna were demanding the resignation of state agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate after a video purportedly showing him playing 'rummy' on his mobile phone during the recently concluded monsoon session of the state legislature went viral.
However, Kokate has denied the allegations.
MNS leader Prakash Mahajan met Ghatge at a private hospital where he is undergoing treatment for injuries.

Case booked against unruly students for flaunting swords at birthday bash

Hyderabad: The Asifnagar police booked a case against a group of students for dancing with swords during birthday celebrations organized at Syedaliguda in Asifnagar on Monday night. The celebrations turned chaotic as attendees brandished weapons and disrupted the neighbourhood with loud DJ music. The video of the students cutting cakes with swords and dancing with them in the colony went viral on various social media platforms. This prompted the police to take suo motu cognizance of the incident and register a case under relevant provisions of BNS. Though the incident occurred on Monday night, it came to light on Wednesday as the video of the students dancing with swords went viral on social media. In all, over 10 youngsters, mostly students, participated in the birthday celebrations of a student. Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the organiser of the birthday party, Mohammed Fazal, under multiple charges. Asifnagar Inspector N Anand said a FIR has been issued and further investigation was on. 'As most students were minors, the police are seeking legal opinion before initiating necessary action against them as per rules.'

Smart meters: Karnataka HC stays probe against George, Bescom till August 20

BENGALURU: The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday stayed further proceedings against energy minister KJ George, Bescom MD Mahantesh Bilagi and another official in the case pertaining to a special court directing the Lokayukta police to submit a report on a private complaint filed by three BJP MLAs over the alleged irregularities in inviting tenders for supply of smart meters. Justice MI Arun passed the interim order staying the proceedings till August 20 and issued notice to the complainants after hearing the petitions filed by George, Bilagi and another Bescom official questioning the legality of the order passed by the special court. Their counsel argued that the order passed by the special court is against the law as no prior sanction was obtained from the competent authority to prosecute the petitioners, who are public servants, as mandated under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The complainants, MLAs Ashwath Narayan CN, SR Vishwanath and Dheeraj Muniraj, approached the Lokayukta police on April 21. Before the Lokayukta police initiated action, the complainants filed a private complaint before the special court, which registered it for offences under the provisions of BNS and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

August 7, 1985, Forty Years Ago: Hiroshima Day

The explosion of an atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima 40 years ago was marked at the blast site and elsewhere in the world with warnings that nuclear weapons should never be used again. Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone, speaking before a crowd of 55,000 people in Hiroshima's Peace Park, called for the ultimate abolition of nuclear arsenals. The park stands below the spot where the US B-29 bomber 'Enola Gay' dropped the first operational nuclear weapon on the morning of August 6, 1945. Assam Solution The Home Minister, S B Chavan, is visiting Guwahati for two days to consult people from various sections on the possibility of a solution to the foreigners problem in Assam. Although the government has not fixed any date yet for the resumption of formal talks with the Assam agitation leaders, they may also be consulted during Chavan's Guwahati visit. Chavan's visit follows the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, which discussed the issue. Women In CRPF The Central Reserve Police Force is, for the first time, raising a battalion of women in an attempt to create a force of female police to be deployed in specific situations. Though it is being done on an experimental basis, the Home Ministry is credited with the view that such a force is necessary and should 'be given all the encouragement'. The role of policewomen in situations like communal riots and civil strife could go a long way in containing trouble, it is felt. Oil In Cauvery Oil and gas have been struck in the Cauvery Basin in Tamil Nadu. This is the second find of hydrocarbons in the onland Cauvery Basin in recent months. The Minister of State for Petroleum, Nawal Kishore, made this announcement in both houses of Parliament. The first oil find in the basin was made in January 1985. This was, however, a much smaller one and was located about 10 km from the present location.
