Bokaro Encounter: Top Maoist Vivek with ₹1 crore bounty among 8 killed; weapons recovered
Bokaro encounter: As many as eight Maoists were killed in an encounter by the troops in Bokaro city of Jharkhand on Monday, April 21. Among those killed in the Bokaro encounter was top Maoist leader Vivek, who carried a bounty of ₹ 1 crore on his head.
Security forces recovered one AK-series rifle, one SLR, three INSAS rifles, a pistol, and eight country-made Bharmar rifles. No injuries were reported among the troops, and with firing ceased, search operations are now underway, according to the CRPF.
Earlier, four hardcore Maoists, involved in the killing of a police personnel earlier this year, were arrested by Gadchiroli Police and CRPF during a joint operation in the Palli forest area on April 19.
The arrested Maoists were allegedly planning a fresh attack and have been booked under several sections of BNS, Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, UAPA, and MPA.
An official statement from Maharashtra Police said, Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district being affected by Maoist activities, Maoists engage in anti-National activities such as damaging government property, attacking security personnel, and obstructing government work by arsons etc.
According to the detailed report, on April 19, during a joint anti-Maoist operation in the forest area of Palli—under the jurisdiction of Tadgaon police station and within the limits of Bhamragad sub-division—personnel from Tadgaon police and CRPF 09 Battalion, F-Coy, detained four individuals found roaming suspiciously in the area.

On Tuesday, a high-level security meeting chaired by Udhampur SSP Amod Ashok Nagpure was held to review preparations. The discussions centred on security arrangements, intelligence sharing, traffic management, medical aid, emergency response, and logistical support. Emphasis was laid on anti-narcotics operations. SSP Nagpure directed officers to conduct proactive drives to dismantle narcotic networks in the region. The Amarnath Yatra is an annual Hindu pilgrimage to the sacred cave shrine, dedicated to Lord Shiva, at an altitude of 3,888 metres in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir. The cave houses a naturally formed ice Shivling and draws lakhs of devotees every year. The Yatra is typically held during the Shravan month (July to August) according to the Hindu calendar, under the supervision of the SASB and with coordinated support from security and civil administration.

Police register case over MSC Elsa 3 shipwreck incident
KOCHI: More than two weeks after the Liberian-flagged cargo vessel MSC Elsa-3 sank off the coast of Kochi, police on Wednesday registered a case in connection with the incident. The case was filed based on a complaint lodged by C Shamji, a native of Alappuzha. The Fort Kochi Coastal Police have named the ship's owner, master, and crew members as accused in the case. The accused have been booked under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section 281 for rash navigation of a vessel, section 285 for acts endangering public ways or navigation, section 286 for negligent conduct regarding poisonous substances, section 287 for negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter and section 288 for negligent handling of explosive substances.

'Daisy the cat drove everyone crazy': HC slams 'frivolous' kidnap case
The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday dismissed a criminal case against a Bengaluru man accused of kidnapping his neighbour's pet cat, while strongly criticising the police and complainant for wasting judicial resources over what it called a 'whimsical pursuit' of justice. Justice M Nagaprasanna, who presided over the case, quipped that the pet named Daisy had 'driven everyone crazy', and delivered a stinging rebuke to what he described as a misuse of criminal law. The case originated on February 1, 2022, when Nikitha Anjana Iyer, a resident of Shikaripalya in Bengaluru district, filed a complaint claiming her neighbour Taha Husain had abducted her pet cat, Daisy, and was wrongfully confining it. Iyer described Daisy as being like 'her child' and claimed emotional trauma. Charges dropped, CCTV evidence contradicts claim The police registered an FIR and later filed a chargesheet, though charges under Sections 428 and 429 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) - which pertain to mischief against animals - were eventually dropped. Only charges related to intentional insult and criminal intimidation were retained. Taha challenged the FIR, producing CCTV footage showing the cat moving freely between the two houses, even entering and exiting through open windows. Justice Nagaprasanna noted discrepancies in the prosecution's case, including additional allegations such as abuse and sexual misconduct that had not appeared in the original complaint. Police receive stern warning over 'melodrama' The High Court order pulled up both the complainant and the police. 'If such frivolous grievances are allowed to blossom into a full-fledged criminal trial, it would be nothing but a waste of precious judicial time,' it said, adding that such proceedings divert attention from genuine grievances. The court likened the case to a 'melodrama woven around a cat', warning that permitting such cases undermines the criminal justice system. In a pointed message to law enforcement, Justice Nagaprasanna said, 'Police, too, deserve stern admonition for allowing themselves to be swept into a whimsical pursuit of justice for a cat. The law is a solemn instrument and not a toy to be played at the altar of personal pique.' The court concluded by quashing the FIR and criminal proceedings against Taha, stating that the case was a classic example of personal animosity being dressed up as criminal litigation.
