Trump threatens additional 10% duty on countries supporting anti-American policies of BRICS

Times of Oman07-07-2025
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump issued a strong warning to countries supporting what he termed were the anti-American policies of BRICS.
In a social media post, Trump stated that any country aligning itself with the "Anti-American policies of BRICS" will face an additional 10 per cent tariff on goods.
"There will be no exceptions to this policy," Trump wrote, adding, "Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
Trump's statement signals a hard stance from the U.S. administration against what it sees as growing opposition from BRICS nations.
The response came after the joint statement of the finance ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting of BRICS nations voiced against the unilateral imposition of trade and finance-related actions, including the raising of tariffs and non-tariff measures.
The statement stated, "We voiced our serious concerns with the unilateral imposition of trade and finance-related actions, including the raising of tariffs and non-tariff measures which distort trade and are inconsistent with World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules."
The statement further adds that "In this testing environment, BRICS members have demonstrated resilience and will continue to cooperate among themselves and with other countries to safeguard and strengthen the non-discriminatory, open, fair, inclusive, equitable, transparent, and rules-based multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, avoiding trade wars that could plunge the global economy into recession or further prolong subdued growth".
Altogether BRICS nations - Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and many other developing nations who joined BRICS over the last few years, accounts for nearly half of the world's population and about 40 per cent of the global GDP. The BRICS group now represents about a quarter of the global trade and investment flows.
As the tariff postponement deadline is approaching on July 9th, U.S. President Donald Trump also announced that the United States Tariff Letters and Deals with various countries will be delivered starting 12:00 P.M. (Eastern), Monday, July 7th.
In a separate social media post, Trump said these letters will be sent to different countries around the world.
Earlier, on April 9th, Trump paused the implementation of tariffs for 3 months, which is ending on July 9th.

India: Food items, products of daily use by common people to attract 5% GST rate under new reforms

New Delhi: Most of the "common man items" are proposed to be moved to the lower GST slab rate of 5 per cent under the GST rationalisation initiative, government sources said on Friday, noting that the Centre will closely engage with states to build a broad-based consensus in the coming weeks. The sources said that food items and daily use items will fall in the 5 per cent GST slab. They said if implemented, this proposal will give a big boost to consumption and will have a positive impact on GDP. They also said the government doesn't require legislative changes to implement this proposal. The proposal comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement today during his Independence Day speech that he will make "this Diwali, double Diwali" for the people of the country. He said people are going to get a very big gift on Diwali and the government has embarked on "big reform of GST". The sources said that the Centre's proposal is based on three pillars of structural reforms, rate rationalisation and Ease of Living. The sources said the central government has proposed to scrap the current slab of 12 per cent and 28 per cent of GST rate and keep only 5 per cent and 18 per cent GST rates, government sources said on Friday. They said as part of the initiative, 99 per cent of the 12 per cent slab are proposed to move in 5 per cent slab and 90 per cent of items in 28 per cent slab are proposed to move in the 8 per cent slab. They said that consumer goods kept in 28 per cent slab are proposed to be moved to 18 per cent slab. They also said that a new slab of 40 per cent is proposed for "sin goods" like tobacco and pan masala. The sources said that the proposal on restructuring and new GST slabs will have marginal negative effect on GST collection. They said the proposal has been sent to the Group of Ministers (GoM) to enable constructive and inclusive dialogue. "This will have a big impact on reinvigorating core economic sectors like agriculture, textiles, fertilisers, renewable energy, automotive, handicrafts, healthcare, insurance, construction, transportation," a source said. Sources said a meeting of the GST Council is likely to be held in September-October to consider the proposal. Referring to the pillars of structural reforms, rate rationalisation and Ease of Living, the sources said that structural reforms include correction on invested duty structure (IDS), aligning input and output tax in key sectors to eliminate IDS, supporting domestic value addition and improving liquidity specially for MSMEs. Classification issues would be resolved and there will be streamlining of tax structure on namkeen, savouries. The sources said that long-term clarity in rates will enable better business planning Referring to rate rationalization, the sources said there will be simple tax and two-rate structure of merit and standard goods keeping focus on common people and students. Another significant decision, the sources said, would be reduction in rate of equipment used by farmers, which will help increase production. Sources said in terms of ease of living and compliances, the reforms propose to provide registration to 95 percent of cases within three days. There is a proposal to implement pre-filled returns to reduce manual intervention. The process would eliminate mismatch and compliance burden to multiple notices and there would be faster and automated processing of refunds for exporters and those with IDS, the sources said. In his speech from the ramparts of Red Fort in Friday, PM Modi said the government is coming with the next generation of GST reforms. "This Diwali, I am going to make it a double Diwali for you. This Diwali, you fellow countrymen are going to get a very big gift. In the last 8 years, we have done a big reform of GST, reduced the tax burden across the country, simplified the tax regime and after 8 years, the need of the hour is that we should review it once. We started the review by setting up a high-power committee and also held discussions with the states," PM Modi said. "We are coming with the next generation of GST reforms, this will be a gift for you this Diwali, taxes needed by the common man will be reduced substantially, a lot of facilities will be increased. Our MSMEs, our small entrepreneurs, will get a huge benefit. Everyday items will become very cheap and that will also give a new boost to the economy," he added.

"I will let Ukraine make that decision", says Trump on territorial swap talks with Russia

Washington, DC: US President Donald Trump on Friday (local time) said that territorial swaps between Ukraine and Russia will be discussed in his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, but emphasised that Ukraine will have the final say in any such decisions. Trump made this statement while en route to Alaska, where the high-stakes summit is expected to focus on ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump reiterated that he is not negotiating on behalf of Ukraine, but rather aiming to bring the parties to the negotiating table. Speaking to reporters ahead of the Friday summit at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Trump said, "They will be discussed, but I will let Ukraine make that decision, and I think they will make a proper decision. But I am not here to negotiate for Ukraine; I am here to get them to a table. And I think you have two sides. Putin wanted to take all of Ukraine. If I weren't the President, he would right now be taking all of Ukraine. But he is not going to do it." His comments came shortly after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Anchorage wearing a white T-shirt with "CCCP," the Soviet Union's abbreviation, a move widely seen as a symbolic message about Moscow's hardline negotiating stance. Trump also commented on Putin's delegation, noting the presence of Russian business leaders and also sent a message that the US is not going to do business with Russia until the war is over. "Putin is a smart guy. I have noticed he is bringing a lot of business people from Russia, and that's good. I like that because I want to do business. But we are not doing business until the war is over. We have the world's hottest country, and our economy is also the hottest, having set a new stock market record again. We have hundreds of billions of dollars flowing from tariffs." He futher said that Russia is not doing very well economically, so they might come to a decision. "He [Putin] wants peace with that, because his country is not hot economically, and China is also not doing well economically. I want everybody to do well. The war's got to stop, and the killings have got to stop," said Trump. On Russia's continued military attacks in Ukraine Trump defended Putin saying that it hurt him., Trump said, "They are trying to negotiate. He is trying to create a mental framework that helps him make a better deal. It hurts him, but in his mind, it helps him make a better deal if they can continue the killings. Maybe it's his part of the world, maybe it's just his fabric, his genes, his genetics, but he thinks it gives him strength to negotiate. I think it hurts him, but I will be talking to him about it." Trump also warned Putin of "economically severe" consequences if he shows no interest in ending the war in Ukraine. This comes as European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have been pressuring Trump to take a strong stance against Russia. Trump ruled out NATO membership for Ukraine, suggesting instead that security guarantees could be provided "along with Europe and other countries". When asked if the US could offer security guarantees to Ukraine, Trump replied, "Along with Europe and other countries, not in the form of NATO, you know certain things are not going to happen, but yeah, along with Europe, there is a possibility". Trump has vowed to "end the Ukraine war quickly," while Putin is seeking recognition of Russia's territorial gains and relief from Western sanctions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has refused to surrender territory and hasn't been invited to the summit. As per the White House, several officials are travelling with the US President aboard Air Force One. They include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Ambassador Steve Witkoff, amongst others.
